are we going to have cities competing to host? i think seoul will host the next 25 olympics then, considering their massively superior bandwidth infrastructure as compared to the rest of the world
From 2001 until this year every WCG finals took place in South Korea. However, starting last year cities do in fact compete to host the WCG, and San Fransisco was succesful in their bid and got to host this years event.
are we going to have sports no one watches? minesweeper for example?
Yes, Halo and FIFA are not nearly as popular as Counter-Strike, Warcraft and Starcraft.
are we going to have judging scandals? are we going to have overwhelmingly nationalistic audiences? etc.
Judging scandals have already happened, in last years Counter-Strike tournament the Brazilian team was ruled to have used a bug in the map and forfeited their half, giving an easy victory to the US team. Meanwhile the Brazilians claimed the US had used other bugs without penalty. This 'double standard' prompted a barrage of inflammatory comments from Brazilians on many of the related websites.
Blows lots of money down the drain. 45 million for a system that will be easily circumvented by kids who are more tech savvy then their parents. If China, a nation dependant on controlling all media, can't stop people from getting around their internal content firewall, what do these christian wack jobs think 45 million dollars will get them?
This makes me want to break out my n64. Cheats and gameshark style hacks used to be all the rage for console games. Now the cheats are compiled and plastered on the net right after release and it's usually the same old crap, big heads, items, health, god mode. Nice to see some original and Rare easter eggs.
You talk as if fire is a real threat to reinforced steel skyscrapers. Prior to 9/11 there had never been a case of fire causing a skyscraper collapse. In fact, there was not even a real investigation proving that fire caused the 9/11 collapse; the steel was immediately shipped to Asia for scrap metal. So, since fire is not a big threat to skyscrapers why waste money trying to incorporate a new, unproven and likely expensive technology into steel skyscraper construction?
No, it was a pre-emptive strike on a terrorist planet.

What does it matter? These are nuclear facilities for electricity not weapons. They already have plenty of those facilities and plenty of nuclear warheads on icbm's.
I don't see why the record companies don't have control if the vocals aren't included. Probably because most hit songs out now use 'samples' of other people's music to begin with.
It's rare that there's a problem for me with patching. I like everything about steam save one thing; if Valve patches a game and introduces new bugs, there's no way to revert back to the old, stable version. You're simply stuck with the buggy game until they update again or rollback.
Where does he say that it's not about the money? All he says is he does well enough as it is, and those people who will watch it from downloads he's ok with because he's trying to get his message out to as many people as possible. It's funny how people with an axe to grind won't even read the quote they're quoting in their own post.
I like that in your interviews you asked about what games people played, as it can be starting point for conversation about the type of person you are talking to. However, I find it strange that you would give 'extra points' to those who only played adventure games and wrote off those who played RPG's as compulsive, and FPS'ers as having ADD. All games are puzzles. All gamers must solve puzzles to win the game. A retard can play MYST, just as a skilled programmer can play CS. Your stereotypes are very misguided.
Completely agree, if you can schedule days and times where you both know you're going to be gaming then it's a lot easier on everyone, and doesn't become too time consuming and it becomes an activity just like playing basketball every weekend (health benefits aside). When your only gaming is competitiv gaming, online or LAN, it's even easier to justify, and is potentially more rewarding.
I don't understand the need for this level of power consumption and processing horsepower in a video card for even the most demanding games.
Just like every advanced commercial technology, not many people 'need' the power of the most high end products. But for those of us who buy at the more affordable price points, the release of these cards are just as significant. I'm sure soon enough you'll be able to pick up a 9800pro for dirt cheap, and for people like you that's probably great. In another year's time, when applications will have caught up with these next generation cards, we'll be seeing these products at those same bargain bin prices.
Makes sense. In an earlier Mars rover thread I was linked to a pbs NOVA video about the rovers. PBS for some strange reason allows only US residents to watch these videos (I'm in Canada). After using a public US based proxy to circumvent PBS's useless attempt at control, I tried to login to Slashdot only to find that it doesn't recognize my userid/pw combo. Needless to say, after removing the proxy I could login as normal.
Here's what I think Nintendo is trying to do and it's all based on backward compatability. Losing GBA backward compatability would be foolish, but to compete with the PSP chances of achieving that compatability are slim. What I believe Nintendo is doing is making the DS cartridge based and backward compatible with GBA games. They will market this point, along with it's innovation and at a significantly lower price than the PSP. Although pitting the GBA games against PSP seems foolish, the kicker is this. Nintendo will, if I'm right, announce that their GBA2 will be backward compatible with GameCube games. Undoubtedly the GBA2 will be released sometime after the PSP, but they have the DS, with it's backward compatibility and hopefully some interesting gameplay to bridge the gap between the two releases. I never bought a gamecube, but I know there are alot of great, exclusive games that were released that I can probably get pretty cheaply. And with such a large library of games from the start GBA2 even released after PSP would be my choice for portable 3D console.

Despite some early rumors of accomodation problems, this should be a great tournament. Here's some pics of the opening ceremony.

If you were, you would know that this 'model' is the one and only Lil'Jon. Although I find those glasses hideous, I find Lil'Jon to be hilarious.
Or the next thing you know, some sick computer hacker will get in there and start sending tax bills to rich people.
God forbid some 'sick hacker' do such a thing.
The original Playstation 2 did not have an ethernet port, therefore consumers were required to buy an add-on adapter to enable online support.

There is a voting system, just type vote # in console to cast a vote against a player. Type listplayers to see which # corresponds to which player.
