  1. I find it funny on MandrakeSoft Publishes Support Policy · · Score: 1

that people always seem to bash the companies that stay true to their roots.
sure, I might not like mandrake linux all that much
but, it does offer a gateway to a brand new user to linux, and they havent lost the focus of linux and tried to become the next monopoly of linux. (like redhat is trying to do)
someone told me once that linux is all about standards, and everyone must follow them. if that were the case, linux wouldnt exist today, it's true that it's all about standards, but standards people set themselves, not set by some random person and everyone obediently follows.
with linux, people agree on something that will make everything work right and it works.

but my point is, look at sco, look at redhat, look at suse and others, more concerned on making the almighty dollar over making advances. which will be their downfall. sadly, the only public face for linux atm is redhat.
However, even though mandrake has a bad rep among most linux users (mainly it being a "n00b" system) it's pretty noble in what it's doing, it's created a gateway for a user to venture forth from.
only reason I dont like it is because of the bloat, which I had to manually remove.
but, still, it's a good system in general, and their attitude is good. that's what counts.
and lindows.. only thing I can say in their favor is that they gave microsoft one good kick in the pants over the lindows/windows name. and you can tell microsoft's still upset over that because they're trying to go to 3rd world countries to get back at lindows. otherwise, lindows' software sucks.

still, I applaud mandrake on this, more companies need to keep that attitude, making "trial" isos of free software doesnt make sense.. at all. I bet in a few years, we'll be mocking redhat instead of sco over similar shit.
    who knows.
anyways, remember what they say, if you dont like it, do it yourself. :P

well, linux and bsd might be excellent, and have great kernels, but if you've ever seen beos in action, it can put them to shame.

the original beos had excellent multitasking and multithreading support (you could run 20 mpeg movies at once.. and 50 mp3's... and there wouldnt be system lag.. at ALL.)

this is what these guys are trying to re-implement, and the last thing we need is yet another linux or bsd based system
the point of opensource is to be innovative. not to copy and work off someone else's technology without improving apon it.

create something new, exciting, bold, etc and you have something real there.

sure, I might be working on my own linux distro, but it's dedicated to older machines people wouldnt touch with a 10 foot long pole. but the fact remains, to sit there and roast them because they arent using a common kernel, is defeating the purpose.
I dont see linux torvalds sitting back and telling them to use his kernel. because hell, I know linux would be like "good luck on something new"
at least they're doing something unique and nonstandard.
if no one decided to push forward in computers, we'd prolly would be sitting at vt100 terminals still.
I say, let them go for it. they wanna use their own kernel, let them.
if I were making a real time desktop system, I wouldnt use linux for that. I'd use linux for a server and possibly a desktop as well.

OpenBeOS might be new competition for linux in the future.

never close your mind, always keep it open

and heck, I do love linux, it's prolly one of the best systems ever. in my opinion. however, from what I've seen in beos.. I say the linux kernel devs need to start implementing more features like that.. sure, there might be pre-emptive kernel features, but what about true multi-threading and multitasking.
This is also almost the scenario with linus and linux back when he started writing it, he got shit from minix devs and others who said he should just stop, and the monolithic kernel is dead, etc and just port an already existing kernel, etc.. well, he got help and now we have linux. end of story.

but anyways, my point is that I often see many computers with shit still on the hard dtives..
these people need to grab a linux cd and run fdformat on their hard drives (it works btw)
    and then do cat /dev/null > /dev/hda
and then just to make sure.. cat /dev/random > /dev/hda.. then ditch the computer.
though I suggest doing all of them about 3 times just to make sure data is so lost it cant ever be recovered.

  8. kde on KDE 3.2-beta2 - Towards a Better KDE? · · Score: 1

I think is prolly the best choice for new users just coming from windows, or macos.

the reason why kde gets a lot of crap is because of the regular linux users, or diehards think it's shit, namely because it's like windows and macosx, and is bloated, however, it loads most apps on my 433 faster than gnome did, well, apps that didnt need the dcop server.
many apps are also well designed and run well, and work, gnome, some apps either load slowly, or lack functionality, and sometimes freeze or crash.
I know gnome 1.4... an applet crashing could cause issues to arise.
KDE isnt that bad, especially for newbies who just want things to work, and work right.
    then they can consider gnome.
gnome does have a lot of strengths, a lot of apps compiled in gtk dont need gnome. (I dont know why there are apps in gtk that require and depend on gnome) and gnome 2.x seemed nice to me when I tried it. metacity was a drawback IMHO.

if you truly want speed, whilst maintaining a windows like interface.. icewm and dfm will do the job.

but in general, if you dont like it, dont use it.

people complain about kde as if it were forcing people into using it.

it's just a desktop environment. same with gnome, this is why linux has alternatives, and if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Honestly, you look at the work they've accomplished so far, they've done a good job.
I havent seen many other desktop environments that are as user friendly as kde. in fact, I can safely say zero.
    kde is staightforward..
gnome is that next step off of kde.
    and so on.

What's plaguing linux in the desktop market is people who cant place themselves in a new users' shoes and figure out what they want out of it.
and like I said.. KDE is basically a new users' interface to linux. so dont complain if it isnt technical. it's like making the Spirit of St. Louis go into a dogfight with an f-22, it wasnt what it was made for.
KDE isnt really for a seasoned linux tech, and a console based system or minimalist window manager isnt for a new user.
so for once, look at it in an unbiased view and what it can do before rekindling the tried and worn arguement about how gnome or *insert random wm name here* is better than KDE, because honestly, kde is a nice setup, needs a little cleaning up in some spots and needs better methods of loading things, and needs to rid of excess programs, functions and code.

(where kde runs up the buck unlike gnome.)

hell, you can create a perfect desktop environment with icewm and dfm (or something like it)

if gnome keeps getting pushed and doesnt do something about the bloat.. it'll be hurt by big time competitors.. such as microsoft or apple.. apple will use its quartz argument... microsoft will find little things.. plus the fact it's slow, compare the two.. then trump up the results to make it more dramatic. and when a user uses gnome.. microsoft will look like the heroes of the desktop..
