Max Payne taught me one thing, painkillers are like a fountain of youth in pill form. Blasted with a shotgun? Pop a couple of these buggers and move on ya pansy.
Games are going in the same direction as the movie industry. Flashy effects, big names, and weaker plots. Every movie is a remake of a classic movie/TV show, bastardized sequel, or a comic book. This still makes money because its always interesting to see a new take on something. Now what I don't find interesting is something like this. Jean Claude Van Damme is an "insert occupation here" fighting the "insert organization here" to regain his honor. (Its a fun game, try it sometime.)
Jean Claude Van Damme is an "lonely housewife" fighting the "EA slave drivers" to regain his honor.
Last time I checked (probably a while ago) Starcraft and Diablo II already had LAN support. Although you needed to have one computer have an active internet connection for D2 for some odd reason. Honestly though I think most people like bnetd so you can play pirated copies of games and thats what its going to come down to.
Definately been a Blizzard fan since Warcraft 2 came out. Had the original Diablo on pre-order for months in advance likewise for all of their games from then on. I had tried the MMO market before in Eve Online and I wasn't too impressed so I was skeptical on WoW and didn't get it until I knew a bunch of people that had and liked it. I started playing in February and have been loving it since. I really only considered it because of the Blizzard name and the Warcraft Universe, otherwise I'd still be playing Unreal 2004. Heres to another 10 years of good games from Blizzard (all two of them)
I honestly see the same comments on every thread about a FPS game. I loved Doom3 it got a little repetitive at points admitted it was a great game. It had its faults in the multiplayer arena but I knew going into my purchase that I was buying a single-player game. I had UT2k4 so I wasn't in need of a revolutionary new multiplayer game. Half-Life 2 as well was a great game as well. Kept me very entertained and CS:S and HL2:DM are still loads of fun.
Now honestly if you're going to knock this title and every other FPS that came out in the last 2 years please save us your 'Wisdom' or go flame DNF for not being done yet ya unoriginal bastids!
Raven won't botch this one they reliably create great games, but they always seem to time their releases concurrently with something truely awesome that blows them out of the water. (For instance Heretic 2 and Half-Life came out roughly the same time)
I plan on playing both. With no monthly subscription wheres the harm? I think that monthy subscription fees are the only reason that online games lose their casual feel, you kind of feel obligated to play it more because you're paying for it either way.
Well I know I bought it, and some two million other people bought it. Hell I love the game not a complaint with it and I'd been playing it since release. (Not directed at the parent from here on out) What complaints are really valid? Steam downloads? Get off of dialup and join the 21st century. Authentication? If you *bought* the game there are no worries. Steam servers have been down a few times since release and people couldn't play for precious hours. Stop crying like a bunch of WoW players on a tuesday morning, stop whining about your rights and fair use because live with it, we don't have any.
Unreal 3? By everyone then you mean everyone in two years then right? Aye and you're correct on it just being a new level to stress test high end cards, said so back in January or early Feb on Steam News.
Lets put this in perspective. I'd say roughly the same number of people know what Slashdot is as Everquest, which isn't saying much. If you're not into PC gaming or are friends with a couple of nerds who are, you probably haven't heard of it. As for naming your kids after a video game character, yeah thats pretty sad but its not that bad. At least its not a common name spelled wrong to make it more original.
Unfortunately people are going to flip out that they're paying just as much as someone else and they are not getting to play the same game. You cant let one server have access to the newest patch without letting everyone have access to it.
That would destroy the economy so fast. I wish my government would print us all a million dollars so that I could pay $10,000 for a soda. Thats what would happen if Blizzard made a buy some money button.
You're looking at it from a consumer end of things. From the developer's point of view the cost is there! I think Half-Life 2 took something like 50 million dollars to make. Hell licensing the Quake 3 Arena engine alone costs quarter of a million dollars. Games used to be able to be made by a team of half a dozen. Lucky if you can get by with 20 nowadays.
I don't know about you but god damn near everyone (thats a gamer) I know pays to play a game online somewhere or other be it WoW, EQ2, or Xbox Live. I think you need to look at some numbers friend and try telling Blizzard that there isn't that many people interested in pay to play gaming. Its a huge market the only problem is that the life-span of a game is shorter with each new game that comes out the player base of your game will drop overtime.
That game was very fun, controls were a little tough to get used to though (if I remember you never turned just a different button shot in a different direction?). Also it was one of my favorite Brood War custom maps to play as well.
I'm sorry but thats horseshit. Blizzard is one of if not the best pc developer out there. They dont crank out titles so that you'll buy it, forget it, and move on to their next title 3 months down the road, they make genuinely good games that are fun, lasting, and definately replayable. CD-Keys are a tool designed to prevent people from pirating games hence if a game has a CD-Key don't fucking buy it used. Blizzard has only been using them for 9 years now maybe you'll figure it out in a another decade. Whats so wrong with buying a brand new game having your own copy and not having to gripe, bitch, and moan every 5 minutes. Go back to Linux and wait for a good developer like Blizzard to come around, you'll die of old age.
Granted I'm still going to buy it, with no monthly subscription whats to lose? But it just doesn't seem to have an RPG / non-combat side to it that I am looking for in a game...
Every game I've seen that adds non-combat opportunities are horribly abused. They are easily very easy to obtain like professions in WoW where everyone does something so no one can do something special. Or they are so dull that they're only used on an Alt to boost one's main character. They need to make these things engaging yet unique that you can play one as a main character, not just an alt, and at the same time not easily obtainable so that everyone and their mother can do it.
Bugs? I've been playing for a month and I've yet to encounter a bug. Only problem is too many people want to play the game. Once hardware gets sorted out its clear sailing.
The Anonymous Coward has on his grumpy pants today.

But can it play Doom3?
Honestly how many times have you sat in a window on CS_Italy with an awp (or scout for you cool people) till you heard "Terrorists Win" ?

Haven't had a cd/dvd rom drive die on me in 10 years even the one that came with my dell in 99.

Short of the hardware requirements I've found nothing wrong with the game.

Turn up the graphics quality and hop a ride on a griffon. Talk about WoW. My only gripe with the graphics is that character protraits arent animated.
