  1. Netflix dealing with the devil...? on Wal-Mart Turns Over DVD Rentals to Netflix · · Score: 1

I am actually surprised that Wal-Mart didn't crush the competition. Some people might be scared of Microsoft as a monopoly, but I find Wal-Mart much more frightening. And for all you Netflixers out there, give the newest version of my Netflix queue manager, FlixQueue, a spin. We're nearing the end of beta, and we have many new features! http://www.5hyphen.com/flixqueue/index.htm

  2. Re:I'm fed up of hearing about Katamari's sequel on We Heart Katamari Preview · · Score: 2, Insightful

And Katamari Damacy can't even claim huge localization costs. Anyone who has played the game knows that the game wasn't localized at all. They translated it, very well I must say, but left all the Japanese humor in. I really hope they stick with it in the second.

  3. Re:video game without violence!?! on We Heart Katamari Preview · · Score: 1

I'm not trying to be critical or insulting, just curious. Showing a false god is offensive, even if you know it's not real, and you don't believe in it?

I suppose any title can be offensive to some person or group, but I found KD to be rather unoffensive, and I thought it would be a good game for people of all ages to play.

  4. Huge customer base = failure? on The DVD Rental Race Analyzed · · Score: 1

I disagree with the opinion of Netflix dying anytime soon. Regardless of stock prices, Netflix has a steadily growing customer base, which is definitely the biggest asset a company can have. They are striving toward profitability, and with their target of 4 million customers by the end of the year, I'm pretty sure Netflix will be here for a while

Nothing against Blockbuster, but they certainly don't have the online customer base that Netflix has, and until they start shipping movies from every store, I don't feel they have any major advantage on Netflix.

  6. Competitive Market on Amazon Talking with Netflix And Blockbuster · · Score: 5, Interesting

I really don't think the market could hold another major competitor, so partnering with Blockbuster or Netflix would be a smart move... Although I heard rumors that Hollywood Video might also be looking at starting an online movie rental business. That might be an ideal partner for Amazon, as both are fresh in the business.

Also, for a shameless plug, if there are any Netflix users out there, and you think dealing with your queue is a pain, try my new software (Windows), called FlixQueue.

  7. Re:No problem! on New Virus Attacks Via RAR Files · · Score: 1
I actually believe that if Windows didn't "Hide the file extension for known types", as is the default setting, viruses would be a much less serious issue. In other words, what they see for that file is "foto.jpg". They know what a jpg file is, and forget the Windows is actually hiding the true file extension. I think most people actually know that you shouldn't open an exe file from an unknown source, but hiding the file extension makes people forget.
I agree to some point, but I would think, and at least for me, that the icon would give it away. Also, if I'm not used to seeing extensions, I would get a bit leery should I suddenly see one.

Regardless, the headline is a bit sensationalist. I was worried for a bit, as I use .rar almost exclusively. However, this isn't really news. I would be more afraid if there was some virus lurking in the .rar itself, that upon extraction whacked you with some nasty code.
  8. No problem! on New Virus Attacks Via RAR Files · · Score: 4, Insightful

I fail to see the problem here. TFA says that the .rar contains a file like foto.jpg.exe. This is nothing new, they're just using a better compression program to spread their malware.

Carry on with the downloading, there's nothing to see here...

  9. 1 step forward, 1 step back? on New Rules Proposed on Electronic Evidence · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm thinking that this is a good thing. I like how the proposed amendment to 37(f) leaves things nice and open by saying, "...should not be subject to sanctions when information is destroyed 'because of the routine operation of the party's electronic information system.'"

Could we see a new ISP springing up that 'routinely' wipes out logs every week? Might it provide better security and anonymity for its customers?

Of course there's the downside of better protecting true criminals, but I think in today's Big Brother-esque, PATRIOT act society, a little more protection from overreaching laws is a good thing.

Since when is the US a democracy? The US is a representative republic. I know there's some argument over the terms, but the US has never been a direct democracy as far as I know, but a representative democracy, or a republic-style government.

Yes, I'm being semantic, and I'm probably incorrect. Regardless, I think of democracy as 1 person 1 vote, not an electoral college.

  12. And you expected...? on iPod Most Popular Music Player on Microsoft Campus · · Score: 1

Well, Microsoft workers or not, they all know what the best MP3 player is out there. I don't see too much of a problem as there isn't any direct competition that I know of. There are no Microsoft-branded HD MP3 players out there. I understand the incongruency of this, but it's not like I can blame them for having good taste.

  13. Government grants?!? on Canada to Give Ubisoft Grants · · Score: 4, Interesting

I respect Ubisoft and the Montreal studio, they make excellent titles that are well developed.

But why does the government have to give money to them? I was under the idea that they were doing quite well for themselves. Could this possibly be a move to try to force out EA, or allow Ubisoft to get a majority of their own shares? I think that as long as they continue to pump out great games, us gamers will be more than willing to fill their coffers.

OTOH, this will be a good bolster to their equipment, and allow them to more fully exploit the next generation systems coming out. Next-gen titles will certainly be more expensive and/or take longer to develop. Maybe we can now get a Splinter Cell 4 soon for the PS3, XB2, or Revolution.

Finally, a little OT, but I am always glad to see game innovation coming out of somewhere other than Japan. And maybe we should all get out there and buy some stock now, before it shoots up.

Rest assured that no matter what they replace the d-pad with, it will be pulled off very well, and will most likely change the face of video game controls for years to come.

And you'll get to use this control scheme to play yet another Mario Party game, as well as 2 new Pokemon games, 8 new Harry Potter games, but unfortunately only a couple really great Nintendo properties.

Don't listen to me, I'm just bitter that we don't have a Kid Icarus sequel. Bastards.

  21. Great idea... in theory. on Majesco Adds Konami TV Games To Diverse Line-Up · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think these little TV Games are a great idea on paper. Some of the are even great in practice. For those who choose not to MAME, it's certainly easier (and cheaper) to run to the toy store and buy this TV Game for $20 than it is to track down an old Atari and a few games for it. Of course, the choice in this latest round is weak. Why don't we see Nintendo making this type of device, pack on 20 or so classics, call it SUPER FUN JOY 1 MILLION IN 1, and sell it for $49.99? I know I would buy it.

  24. Re:Logical Solution? on SNK Talks Sony Approval, Xbox Exclusives · · Score: 1

I have found that at the Game Crazy I work at, budget titles don't sell as well as higher priced titles. People see a game that came out at $20, and the first assumption is that the game must suck, or it's typical bargain bin schlock. So by bundling 2 or 3 games, selling at $40-$50, it increases the perceived value to the customer by not only being a full-priced game, but by including multiple games on that disc.

  25. Re:Ahh yes. on Square Enix Considering Next-Gen Xbox Development? · · Score: 1

Then why did they release FFXI on the PS2? I believe that there are about 70 million PS2s sold worldwide. I snagged that info from a news.com story from the beginning of this year. There is a story on 1up.com that details worldwide PS2 network adaptor sales. Worldwide, only 3.5 million network adaptors have been sold. So, the Xbox Live 20% attach rate sounds pretty good to me, considering only 5% of PS2 owners have the ability to play online. Take these figures with a grain of salt as the PS2 allows both broadband and dial-up users to connect, while for Live broadband is required, which could cause quite a swing in numbers.
