  1. Steve Jobs told Corning to make Gorilla Glass on Misunderstanding of Prior Art May Have Led to Apple-Samsung Verdict · · Score: 1

Here's a quote from Walter Issacson:

a really great CEO in this country, Wendell Weeks, who runs Corning Glass. Steve Jobs when he does the iPhone decides he doesn’t want plastic, he wants really tough glass on it, and they don’t make a glass that can be tough like they want. And finally somebody says to him, because they were making all of the glass in China for the fronts of the stores, says, “You ought to check with the people at Corning. They’re kind of smart there.” So, he flies to Corning, New York, sits there in front of the CEO, Wendell Weeks, and says, “This is what I want, a glass that can do this.” So, Wendell Weeks says, “We once created a type of process that created something called Gorilla Glass.” And Steve said, “No, no, no. Here’s how you make really strong glass.” And Wendell says, “Wait a minute, I know how to make glass. Shut up and listen to me.” And Steve, to his credit, shuts up and listens, and Wendell Weeks describes a process that makes Gorilla Glass. And Steve then says, “Fine. In six months I want enough of it to make–whatever it is–a million iPhones.” And Wendell says, “I’m sorry, we’ve actually never made it. We don’t have a factory to make it. This was a process we developed, but we never had a manufacturing plant to do it.” And Steve looks at him and says what he said to Woz, 20, 30 years earlier: “Don’t be afraid, you can do it.” Wendell Weeks tells me Because I flew to Corning, because I just wanted to hear this story. Wendell Weeks tells me, “I just sat there and looked at the guy. He kept saying, ‘Don’t be afraid. You can do this.’”

Wendell Weeks said he called his plant in Kentucky that was making glass for LCD screens, and said, “Start the process now, and make Gorilla Glass.” That’s why every iPhone in your pocket and iPad has Gorilla Glass made by Corning. This is the reality distortion field that is, I submit, part and parcel of a guy who doesn’t believe the rules apply to him, even the rule about never cut in line.

From past experiences with Motorola's disaster of a Linux based cellphone platform EZX, I have no faith in cell phone companies to deliver what consumers would actually want out of a Linux based phone. I hope I'm wrong, it seems all this announcement will lead to is another closed platform, where the full benefits of using Linux as an operating system will be ignored. Microsoft's current Windows Mobile platform, while having its share of problems, works very well for what I want to accomplish: easy Calendar and Contacts synchronization, Push E-mail, a fairly stable platform for which to develop applications, and all the server and backend support necessary for such mobile to desktop integration. I would be much more impressed with this announcement if the companies involved would have included some of those currently trying to bring this functionality to Linux and open standards, such as Novell and Google, or at least a notice of commitment to creating an open platform supporting open standards instead of focusing on Linux as just an enabler for a low cost cellphone development.

I was among those that bought one of the early Motorola Linux EZX phones.. the E680. It was a pretty cool device, with lots of features, and pretty decent speed. There was a growing user community based around it, who even went to some lengths to find the correct modem and bluetooth drivers to let us open a shell in the OS. It was unfortunate that Motorola never released a SDK for the Linux platform, as even a simple procedure such as changing the phone's icons took alot of hacking. Much of the early enthusiasm for the phone was lost when it was found that there wasnt much we could do could get apps to run on the platform (not sure if this is still true...). It would have been great to see the platform take off, but unfortunately Motorola decided to keep it closed. Since then, I've only used Microsoft Pocket PC based phones because its one of the few mobile platforms that meet most of my needs.

The new HD DirecTivo will have dual OTA tuners and dual Satellite tuners, meaning you can be recording up to 3 HD/SD programs while watching another one live. The HD is 250GB and will support all HD as well as SD output formats. The unit has recently entered Beta testing and hopefully will appear on store shelves soon. Check AVSForum for more info.

DirecTV HDTV actually delivers quite a good image. Flipping between the same game on Sunday Ticket HD on DTV and CBS-HD OTA reveals some artifacts being introduced occassionally from further compression but still delivers a good image that will only get better as more satellites get in the sky. Other channels such as ESPN-HD (when they are actually showing HD) and Discovery HD look excellent compared to full bitrate OTA channels.

The hubbub began after Bush told ABC News Wednesday that Beijing needs to understand that the U.S. would "do whatever it takes" to defend Taiwan. I am inclined to disagree with that analysis. Although they might have overpaid slightly, Rare is still capable of making great games, such as Star Fox Adventures (why focus on older, Nintendo 64 efforts versus their newest, critically acclaimed game?). Also, looking at their historical record, you leave out their megahit Goldeneye, the excellent Conker's Bad Fur Day, and (what is claimed to be) the best selling 16-bit game ever, Donkey Kong Country.

An arguement can be made that their Non-Nintendo-Franchise record has not been that hot, but many of their games have been mega-sellers, and feature great gameplay and replayability. They just need to stay away from the "collect-a-thons" that Rare and Nintendo seemed to be obessesed with in the N64 days as a result of their Pokemon and Mario success.

Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo are already Xbox bound, and having seen their Xbox Teaser Reel, it seems that Conker is ready for the Xbox as well!

When Carmack even admits that Doom 3 is targeting feature sets introduced with the GeForce1, you begin to realize how far back game developers are behind the hardware. How many games even utilize bumpmapping and other new features introduced in previous generations?

No, people buy hardware to have the newest things and the fastest things. Who knows what the difference between a 12,000 and 13,000 3DMark score is? But that extra 1,000 marks makes many a people's day. The difference between 200 and 300 FPS in Quake? It might matter to some, but I have no idea what it means, only that if your computer can do it, it's cool ;).

Why do i have a ATI 8500, GeForce3 Ti200, AND a Geforce2? Beats the heck outta me, cause games sure don't need them-- but I'm sure many others out there have similar dilemmas.
