It only makes sense to lock out any use of a computer other than the job at hand. After all, we are only extensions of our tools, not sentient individuals. It's just like prohibiting seamstresses from talking or looking out the window. Granted, they don't use the sewing machine to communicate or gain a view to the outside, but still...
How much fun would it really be to screw over your soon-to-be-ex-co-workers? Have a little self respect and just give them the two weeks notice and be done with it.
If 3000 people die as the result of a nuclear meltdown in Chernobyl then people say that if that's a worst-case scenario then nuclear power is worth the risk. If, however, 3000 people die when a plane crashes into the World Trade Center in New York then we must declare war!
I'm not saying that it's the same individuals espousing both viewpoints, but it sounds kind of hypocritical, nonetheless.
You can say this is an apples-to-oranges comparison. Maybe. But which site will be rebuilt and re-populated first: New York or Chernobyl?
Massachusetts used to have V66, broadcast on UHF channel 66; you didn't even need to have cable. Unfortunately, they folded a long time ago to be replaced by a home shopping channel.:^b
I'm using an Archos Recorder V2. It's an MP3 player with a USB 2.0 interface and a 20GB hard drive. Windows sees it as a generic Mass Storage Device so you can just drag and drop files to and from it. It uses a standard 2.5" notebook hard drive. Those hard drives are expensive compared to desktop drives, but at least it's easy to upgrade the drive (up to a limit of ~120GB, if I remember correctly). It can run off a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, or USB power. I think they're selling for $150-$200 these days. If you get one, do yourself a favor and install the RockBox firmware.
I've also used various digital cameras the same way, but they tend to have less storage space available.
Pyramid scams/schemes/whatever destroyed the economy of Albania. ISTR that this resulted in a flood of refugees to Italy. Pyramid schemes hurt us all. Here's an article about the Albanian pyramid schemes.
Ew. In 2014 Janet Jackson will be *old* (I mean *older*) and Britney Spears will be old enough to drive.
Honestly, though, I think Mr. Sawyer forgot that his forecast is supposed to be for only 10 years in the future; it's not *that* far off. He also fails to acknowledge the potential mis-uses/bad sides/cons to many of the predictions he makes. His 2014 is viewed through rose-colored glasses.
I was pretty impressed when I discovered that I could place my Kleenex box in front of my webcam or even unplug the webcam! Obviously, Apple's way is better.
Hey, how about giving us laypersons a definition of haptic before you toss such jargon around willy-nilly? According to Merriam-Webster it means: relating to or based on the sense of touch
Why would you look to Wired for questions about language? That's what dictionaries are for! If you want to know if a word should be capitalized or not, look to a dictionary like OED or Merriam-Webster. Incidentally, Merriam-Webster lists internet with a capital "I."
If we ever run into intelligent life elsewhere in the universe (not just on Mars), I don't think they'd be particularly pleased to find that we'd terraformed Mars to suit our needs. They might be okay with it, but it'd certainly be easier to get relations off on the right foot if we don't change Mars.
Yeah, right. Like a girl from craigslist would converse with me.
Honestly, though, I run my own mailserver. I've got 120GB available to my mailbox. I have no problem searching for any string simply using the search capability built into Thunderbird. I haven't heard of any gmail feature that sounds particularly compelling to me.
Say that others have survived such contract jobs and made a fortune doing it. What difference does it make? You still have to make up your own mind about whether it's worth the risk to you, and just how much you need the hazard pay.
It wouldn't be worth it to me, but I'm able to pay my rent right now. I'd guess it's more likely than not that you'd live through such a mission, but I'd rather take my risks on a motorcycle.
I didn't realize Homier sold tools over the web now. They used to (maybe still do) run a traveling tool sale, setting up shop in the conference room of various Holiday Inns (and other hotels, no doubt). I bought an engine stand and a Dremel from them back in the 90s. Both tools are still in service.

I believe that "ultra-fast" is a technical term. Maybe it's in TFM. :)

iTunes doesn't have DRM issues? Or do you use your iPod without iTunes?
Also, did you hear that Real now works with iPods? Or did Apple kill that in the courts and I missed the news?

How soon we forget...

Piracy is getting increasingly easy? Wow! That's news to me! I guess I should look into it...
Good point. I've long been under the impression that internet was supposed to be lower-case. I don't remember what gave me that idea, though.
Hush! I think The Man is reading this!
Hmmm... I might be able to save myself some money in that scenario, too!
How could I practice calculated slacking and still respect myself?

I'm not going to spend much time thinking this through, but comparing outsourcing to smart systems seems like an apples-to-oranges comparison to me.

Why do people still feed money to the RIAA? You're enabling their sue-happy ways!
I usually get dinner in return for fixing friends/familys computers. I'd probably get dinner even if I didn't touch their computers, though.
Why do they have flaky scum on their shower curtains? Perhaps it's time they cleaned their showers.
