    You are damn right about that... if only i could convince my younger sis about the same. She plainly refuses to sample any music written/performed by dead artists... whatever happened to cult music !!
    Its like most of the kids now have the same bland taste in music (i said most), they prolly are impressed more by what they see than hear too. And each generation seems to give its own definition of wat rock is !! Or maybe i am getting old. "Rock is dead" anyway.

    The only kinda pr0n u can get from this is subatomic pr0n... protons, electrons, neutrons (my knowledge of subatomics ends here) randomly crashing into each other (or mebbe not) and the creation of a few queer quarks ...ok bad joke.

    How about other non-free IDE's like intellij IDEA ?
    I used it at work about a year back and it was awesome. Much better than eclipse in performance but kinda lacking in plugin diversity.
    I have since shifted to writing c++ in vi and eclipse with CDT :-).. and i think i am lovin it(vi) more than an IDE. There is nothing like vi(or mebbe emacs) for keyboard addicts, with the combination of ctags and minibufexplorer. Except debuggin, but thats okay since this is a different language.

    I hope this helps put winamp/nullsoft back on track... and make it the most popular media player.
    Mebbe they will hire justin frankel back... and then mebbe he would release a new p2p network, thats a BT killer... and gives a new life to file sharing. Even now no other media player has been able to give a visualization plugin as awesome as avs... its really unfortunate no more major development is being done on it. The king is dead, long live the king.

    Mebbe they will hire justin frankel back... and then mebbe he would release a new p2p network, thats a BT killer... and gives a new life to file sharing.     But the present is much different in case of revolution vs. ps3 (not going into portables).
    Since Nintendo is also expected to go for a customized multi powerPC based system.

    Well, they have awfully more complicated/non-standard/novel hardware. And the cell-cpu is touted to be more a software+hardware combo kind of arch (i think).

    And their marketing can take good care of the xmas issue... like driving the point of.. waiting for a better console ?

    And if they can make the cell work for this, we could be in for a revolution.

    One problem with this is that you cant share a location map with someone else using a URL... or mebbe i am missing something (hope someone corrects me)

    NOTE: well this is going to be mostly offtopic to the parent but relevant to the post in question. sorry for that.

    I found it a little weird that a post on solar sailing appears on slashdot and no one mentions arthur c. clarke in the entire discussion. (although i am not sure about whether he originally proposed the solar sailing idea.. perhaps twas Kepler)

    I remember first reading about this in school in this book. One of the short stories is about some this space sailing race in which sailing boats have to complete a round around the moon and then return to earth.

    I also heard that he just managed to survive the tsunami.

    infact this reminds me.... just a few days ago i came across this page on wikipedia, when browsing for the apple Newton portable.

    Does the Lyra support the seek to xx:xx time function ?
    Otherwise high speed ffw is not a very frequently used function... in winamp eg. i would directly click at the approx position from where i would like the play to continue instead of ffwding.
    but as someone has already posted it depends on the codec also.

    hey !! is it possible to vote for new features in firefox 1.0 final release.
    There are quite a few still left that should be carried on from mozilla, like the ctrl-enter in the address bar to open links in a new tab... and the search integrated with the address bar... to name a few.

    The windows update site takes a hell of a time to load and then scan @ a snails pace.

    Or put another way: so it is expensive and dangerous. So. Bloody. What? human progress is built on blood, tears and insatiable curiosity. If we can do it now (and we can) why not do it now, while we still have chance.

    I just hope thats why we/they are doing it. Perhaps instead the propaganda is working. Public opinion, u see.

    Phd 1: hey you know i really love all these alpha beta releases from the uranium
    Phd 2: i know dude they are totally cool.
    Phd 1: yeah... and if i can get a critical mass of purified U-235 together a chain reaction could start... we could solve the entire worlds energy problem

    I totally agree...
    Seen from a returns point of view the same amount of money invested in earthly(or earth orbital) projects should give better returns. There are tons of more immediate problems here waiting to be solved. Then on top of it there is the question of manned missions to mars... I am not saying that these missions are absurd but only this that more importance should be given to the more deserving projects.

    Perhaps instead we should try to improve the way to launch satellites, find newer techniques of space propulsion, utilise space better from an communication and remote sensing point of view.

    Lets clean the mess we have made in our backyard instead of looking for newer places to colonize. We have even trashed mt. everest.

    Although locating another more technologically advanced race during the mars/moon expedition wouldnt really hurt... ;) unless its the good old world domination story again.

    Yes... i agree.
    but keeping the planets hundreds of miles apart kindoff defeats the purpose... then children and newbies(to space) cant really imagine the whole setup at one time. besides a static model leaves out a lot of details like revolution, rotation eclipses ...etc..

    perhaps the creation of a cybernetic solar system could help... wear you VR goggles and get ready to explore the planets... maybe inside roadside information kiosks... where you can drive from planet to planet in your own turbo charged space car.

    also interaction makes things more interesting than reading info from concrete plate... besides who knows what the kids nowadays like...
