The very same people should watch out for that deadly dihydrogen-oxide poisoning too!
There was a great thread on a blog I like a lot, gnxp. The question there was "how would you answer your 16 year old son/daughter when asked 'what kind of work should i get into when i get out of school'"? The answers in the thread were very shrewd and I see no reason why it doesn't apply in your case.
If you're really wanting to get out I would advise you to really steer clear of anything like your past IT job. So I would have to agree with others that said you should do something that requires you to work with your hands, or even more physically exerting if you're up to it.
A lot of the answers in this thread on gnxp suggested craftsmanship-type jobs. Detail carpentry, for example. Maybe auto body is a good thing too, especially if it's high-end, classic car work. Cater to the rich. They're the ones with all the money. Catering could be lucrative, if you can really cook gourmet meals. Landscaping also pays well supposedly, if you're the boss.
I will leave you with the link to the discussion on gnxp: http://www.haloscan.com/comments/raldanash/4145737 840453249756?url=http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2007/03/ good-jobs-for-average-americans.php
Oh btw I want out of IT too.
If Rachel still has her Hyman she must not be any fun. This theory is supported by her confiscation of the fake IDs. I guess I'm fine with a party-pooper getting a takedown notice.
Incredible to even ask such a question. Maybe it should make you pause and think a little about how far we've slid down into the mentality of victimization. What a bunch of pussies we've all become.
Now...I'm not REALLY familiar with entire span of legacy protocols such as gopher, but what I say is the case for 99% of what's online at the moment. Also, I am not sure this is truly succinct but you can decide that...
The real answer to your question can be found in the following W3C document: http://www.w3.org/TR/webarch/
The summary of this article is that the world-wide-web is an information system comprised of many many unique names (URIs) and the things at the end of each URI. Often its text in the form of HTML. Well, as the internet IS for porn sometimes it's bytes at the end in the form of JPGs and PNGs and GIFs. Sometimes it's bytes of Flash, or PDF-bytes. Sometimes it is software, which could take the form of an executable (.exe), a VOIP conversation, or an HTML-based web application. Sometimes you can't see what's on the other side. It varies widely, but there is always an URL.
This system of names sits atop a network of hardware that simliarly is made up of many unique names (IP addressed). This is the "bunch of telephones" part of it. This is something I personally know less about, but I will say this...the glue that binds these URLs to the hardware with its IP addresses is the domain-name system.
This is one of those questions where the answer is like an onion...it is many layered and you can keep peeling and peeling and peeling layers away. Some are thin, some are thick. I think that the two layers I've outlined...the URI system and the computers with their phone lines are the real important layers.
over java because with java you've got too many options. it requires you to be familiar with all of them and expert in none of them. you can't trust your software unless you've got a deep understanding of the language & the platform. it's hard enough even then!
You know it's illegal to take a photo using a tripod without a permit in NYC? Yeah, that's what all this crazy-ass ip rights stuff gets you. The city of NY owns its image. Hahahahaha! Oh yeah, and they've got all kinds of crazy restrictions on using the subway map too. This place is a real shithole.
the corporate puppetmasters will "work" without stopping until they've finally enslaved all of us.
quit your job. stop paying your bills. you already worked for what you've got.
hey i can already switch windows by typing in a command. the command is Alt+Tab. And if I'm unsatisfied with that I can always Alt+Shift+Tab to cycle through windows in THE OTHER DIRECTION!
nearly unbelievable
really gotta stop hiring people based on what they look like and how agreeable they are
i really think the verizon conspiracy theories are funny too
keep on trading your childrens' happiness for a few dollar bills.
i'd rather sleep in the gutter, addicted to heroin, than have a crackberry habit like these stupid assholes.
That's why those ads appeal to them. They are far more concerned with youth than actual youths. AND yeah apple products have always come with that extra "sexy tax". Kinda like Manhattan rents.
superrockinawesomefuntimes.
i can't stand clean-freaks and OCD germaphobes. guess i won't have to stock up on extra clips and ammo as god's cruel sense of humor will give these retards what they deserve.
While our teenagers are busy flipping burgers and macking chicks, teens in Russia and Poland are spending time in the dim glow of a monitor. Who's the winner? I dunno but like a true geek I gotta believe it's not us. The American way of chasing a dollar is so really working against our future.
Bloomberg is worse than Scrooge! What fucking planet is this guy living on?
The only thing you can do is fill out a form on the mayor's website and tell him what an asshole he is. Maybe choose some different words but he really does deserve any bad word you can think of.
The guy was making $27,000/year? That is peanuts in NYC and only about half of what you need to live here. And he now he's got no job at all.
Piss off bloomberg
I work for a highly regarded web development firm as a programmer, and when I was interviewed I was asked about video games. You see, video games offer a lot of insight into good UI design and other interaction-design issues. So...there are a lot of gamers in the tech field and I think there's also a big crossover between hackers and WoW. So it's quite possible if not likely.
