if linux beats out microsoft in some proverbial future...who are they gonna sue? i think this is one of the advantages of decentralised OSS development. Even if they sue Linus, or one of the other top-level maintainers, *BAM* here comes a fork.
many KDE based distrobutions come with mozilla out of the box (Debian) or Dillo (vector) or Firefox...most end users use the default, so by giving them a default without asking if they want it, microsoft is depriving people of choice.
yea...i used to use BT...untill PSU bought all it's students a napster account (which only works on certian versions of windows...BAH) to justify firewalling bittorrent into oblivion. I wish i could use it, i really do. It's the best file-distribution method since FTP, in my opinion...
as a linux user, i am very frustrated by the fickleness of slashdot...
last time i wrote a reply like this, i got -1 troll...this gets +4 insightful...just my luck.
First off, I completely agree with your "convergance is bad" philosophy...and the unix philosophy yada yada yada...
but one nitpick with your examples, as well as a counterpoint:
Backwards compatability is absolutely nessesary in a converged environment...
"Built-in 802.11b WiFi. Oops, now 802.11g is the standard, and your device is no longer current."
sure, but 802.11g APs are 802.11b compatable, and your device still has the same capability as when you bought it.
"USB 1.1 capable. Oops, now USB 2.0 and later is the standard, and your device is no longer current."
USB2 is USB1.1 compatable...see above
so you see, by keeping backward compatablility, you don't lose standard compliance, you are just no longer bleeding edge in speed/range etc. the real issue here is it is impossible to make something so small modular, so obselete components could be replaced.
who wants to listen to the spice girls?
technically it's not X windows...it's the X Windowing System
stone linux...or baseball linux...or incredibly high pitched singing linux...
to tell ya the truth...i like that better! thanks!

Thanks for giving it away, you insensitive clod...i was really gonna enjoy this, too...

11. ?? 12. Profit
I think it would take nothing short of a hardware design lab to roll your own laptop, sadly.
This is the first time i've seen this, and not to sound pessimistic, but running a program under WINE is a far cry from native support.
...I dont like it. No linux client. POOR ME:(
yea, i don't even think i've played that much zelda!!!
psst, linux has been 64 bit for a while, and it runs on a G5!
or if you have unixisms, and don't want the whole desktop, X would prob be better for this app...
Brainfuck.net ...
8 whole instructions...this needs simplification...and bytecode!!!
wow. This is the most sexist thing that ever made sense...congrats
I always look on freshmeat.net for these solutions...here's a tip...
Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator looks like it was designed for this sort of thing...

i kinda wanna get buried there...how cool would that be!

to add to the miriad of questions...after being linuxified, does it still play PS2 games?
i can finally realise my dream of cramming a computer onto my bike!
