It's like this. People don't just use Windows because it's easy nowdays, they use it because it's easy AND all of the software that runs on it. If Linux ran all of Window's software, then there would be no reason for people to use Windows anymore, because there are user-friendly versions of Linux. Maybe of the F/OSS developers concentrated on something more along the lines of making Linux replacements for very important software, other than essential things like Open Office, The GIMP, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Windows, as I use Linux on my home network -- I'm just only thinking good business right now.
I for one will try my best to attend. I'm on a pretty low budget right now... so I'll probably end up sleeping on the street of I go. Hell, it'll be worth it though! Just breathing the same air as Mitnick, Goldstein, or Woz... *faints* Haha.
Yeah. If you're going to start with Slackware, it's always best to start on the latest version. That applies to anything though. I remember when I wanted to use SuSE before I became updated with news... I installed version 4 around when version 7 was out and when I noticed that all of my new drivers I downloaded asked me to update... I was like "Whao. There's two newer versions out? Damn." so yeah... Slackware is a lot of fun though... and VERY powerful later on once you begin to learn how to use it better.
Even though I am really looking forward to it coming out more than any thing else, I'm glad to be waiting. I love how John Carmack and idSoftware have the attitude of "It'll be released when it's finished." They have always had that attitude and look at their history of games... Hexen, Heretic, RTCW, Quake series, Doom series... hell, even Dangerous Dave. idSoftware can take as much time as they want to make the game -- when it's officially done, it's going to be awesome.
How exactly could they do that though? What happens when some student in a history class looks up stuff on the KKK or Nazis and can't get information. I think the EU needs to think about what they want to do and find a better way of doing it. But besides, like hackers are going to sit back and let their battlegrounds be invaded...
"1) Is it *really* more stable? How often can you *really* get the BSOD to come up in XP? I haven't managed yet. Can you get the uptime I've experienced with Windows on Linux? Probably. Can you get the same uptime and still have sound support? Maybe. Can you do it with the grand total of around 2 hours of configuration necessary?"
Not trying to flame you or anything friend, but what makes you think that just because it doesn't get the BSOD that it makes it stable? Maybe you haven't had a bad experience with Windows, but a lot of people have. You have to look at the times where it just wants to freeze up for no reason at all... during installation of programs that take awhile to install... and other times where an "unexpected error occurs" and randomly shuts down that text document you were working on for quite some time -- without saving it. Oh sure, you saved a great deal of it, but who really saves after every word? And then when you load it back up, you notice that good ol' Microsoft Word's recovery system did not help at all. Oh, and don't get me started on how many little programs that Windows XP runs in the background to hog your RAM... sure, you can turn those off, but they just always seem to come back. Like DCOM... it's almost always running and you never really need it.
"2) Is it *really* more secure, or does it just invite fewer attacks? Yes, I know Outlook is terrible, but that's not the actual Windows OS, nor does it need to be installed."
Yes. It is "really" more stable. Look at how many security holes that is found in Windows over the past few months and compare that to Linux's. You'll notice that there has been a "critical" hole in almost every piece of Windows software, and it always seems to take Microsoft six months to fix anything. Maybe they can't help it... but at least they could find those flaws for themselves.. and get them fixed faster. Linux MAY at one point in time have had more holes, but for one, they are a lot smaller and two, they are fixed almost immediately after being found. As I've said before, you've probably had a great experience with Windows, thus, that's what you are backing your opinions on. But have you really ever used Linux? And yes, Outlook is terrible... Internet Explorer is terrible... oh hell, Windows Explorer is horrible.
"3) Is all the extra aggravation *really* worth it? Yeah, you're extra cool for running Linux and you're sticking it to the man, but why?"
You sound a tad bit jealous, friend. No one is extra cool for using Linux, they are just smart -- both in their actions and decisions. And hardly no one uses Linux to "stick it to the man"... unless it's those little skiddies and their MandrakeLinux. No offense to that distribution though, as some of my friends use it from time to time.
"For reference, I'm a Computer Science student and work as a programmer in the summers."
Awesome dude. I'm happy for you (no sarcasm intended), but maybe you'll start to notice that Visual Basic and C++ aren't the only programming languages you're ever going to need. =P I know you're going to reply back to this and explain to me other languages that you program in, so save it for another time. For a programmer to be stuck in the Windows operating system though... I feel sorry for you. Expand yourself man.
How is it going to be possible for a cellphone to handle 3D games better than consoles or a PC? Whoever stated that comment needs to rethink what he or she's talking about. I mean... how would a cellphone's refresh rate even keep up with a computer monitor's? For one, it's a CELLPHONE, and also, it's an LCD monitor. Even if they do get a faster pace LCD screen for the cellphone, my CRT will still have more FPS (Frames per Second) than it. What's the highest cellphone refresh rate anyway? 5 FPS? It's not going to be possible...
I think Microsoft just has the attitude of "You want to attack us? We'll defend ourselves!" in mind when they brought up this idea. I think it's pretty smart though -- they no longer have to rely on the help of other non-Microsoft programs... but then again, it only adds to the large list of things Microsoft has their fingers in. Tisk tisk.. Monopolies...
You do know that they don't have to change the name everytime a new version comes out.... Look at all the different versions Firebird had before they actually changed the entire browse to what we now have as Firefox.
Oh God. I hope we don't start seeing little script kiddie programs on our cellphones now. The day that some little skiddie attacks my phone with his little Sub7 trojan... I'm going to bash his skull in with a detached payphone.
It's pretty funny that you say "BSD is better than Linux" if you say "GNOME is better than KDE"... normally, people who think something is better than Linux are KDE whores. Despite this offtopic fact though, I agree with whoever mentioned that C++ is only slower because it has to start up from a virtual machine. Even if C++ IS somehow slower than Java, C++ tends to all of my needs and does whatever I need it to do. At the point where it's not quick enough for me anymore, then maybe... I'll use another language that is a lot quicker. since I know it'll be a little while before that happens.
Like the very first copy of Love Hina I picked up at Walden Books the other day... can't wait until my girlfriend goes through it! Haha, she had a few questions to ask about my new Animerica magazine...
What the fuck? Since when did I say that the hackers stole the source code of the game just because it missed the release date? I know what hackers do, because I am one. But what you're describing is more of a cracker and a vandal.
Reread my comments before you make presumptuous statements.
No. If you actually read what I said instead of jumping to comment on it, you'd see that I said it would be a better idea for companies just to be like idSoftware... with the "it'll be done when it's finished" attitude. I know that Valve cannot do that right now, because they already gave a release date. Same for a lot of other companies. It's just the general idea of it...

Why does it block service from Trillian but keep it on Kopete? Does Kopete pay royalities or something?
Kevin was freed in 2000. Now shut the fuck up.

It's not going to take nowhere near as long to renew IE as it is to finish Longhorn... and the only thing they have to do is port it. So no.

...trying to get some mod points? With stupid comments like that, you're never going to get any. *points at you and laughs*
Or just the fact that we ALL are e-mailing him is spam enough. That's A LOT of people afterall...
Oh God. I hope we don't start seeing little script kiddie programs on our cellphones now. The day that some little skiddie attacks my phone with his little Sub7 trojan... I'm going to bash his skull in with a detached payphone.

It's already been created! Just go download the source code from skullbocks.com!
While running DotGNU, of course. Keeping your standard Palm OS... nope. It's just like running Windows (PocketPC) or Linux (DotGNU) today.
Yeah, but of course the one released 15 years ago is not the same as previous ones -- they have improved.
It's like saying... computers are over 25 years old, yet I still use one in my everyday life.
But with websites that just announce them, instead of showing how they can be fixed and posting fixes for them, doesn't really help that...
What the fuck? Since when did I say that the hackers stole the source code of the game just because it missed the release date? I know what hackers do, because I am one. But what you're describing is more of a cracker and a vandal.
Reread my comments before you make presumptuous statements.
Haha. Want to know why? Because he never set any. That's why I keep bringing up his attitude of "it'll be ready when it's finished."
I say to celebrate, they strike a promotion deal where they give away the SuSE lizards, Tux, and action figures of Jack Messman in their happy meals!
No. If you actually read what I said instead of jumping to comment on it, you'd see that I said it would be a better idea for companies just to be like idSoftware... with the "it'll be done when it's finished" attitude. So you're saying that John Carmack, the guy who single handedly transformed the PC gaming industry, is not a programmer?
