+ Cheap: concentrate on what YOU need, let somebody else write a driver for that USB toothbrush
MS doesn't write the windows drivers, they just provide the generic stuff for mobo, vga etc. They can do it this way because when some company makes a sweet piece of hardware, who would buy it if it didn't support windows?
Well, since the stuff is open, they can't lock us in... Unless they make a really sweet db or something, but I like mySQL.... The OS is free, they provide service, apps & customization... That's quite a fall from providing *all* mainframes & servers though... tough luck... Maybe they'll do something unpredictable(tm)?
It should be no suprise that the Chinese want to develop their own standards: using Microsoft for everything would basically put China in a position of having their tech infrastructure being run by a foreign power. This is merely an example and of course it's easy to pick on Microsoft but this idea extends to all ideas that have their standard determined and dictated somewhere else other than by the glorious Chinese communists.
I read somewhere that China commisioned 200 million (oh my, is that the real number? or was it 20 m?) Linux desktops, and they seemed to like the idea of not paying MS. So now, will they make their own OS from scratch? with a built-in drm-like anti-anti-communist-leader-statenent system in the kernel? Or what? bah...:)
Sorta like some countries like to protect their natural resources from getting out... like oil.
Shame on them!
Hi, I'm from Norway, the third largest exporter of oil in the world. You can have all the oil you want from us, provided you pay market price and keep your fucking army on the right side of the atlantic.
Also, the difference between oil and alpakkas is of course that you can continue exporting oil and never run the risk of having some competitor set up his own oil-field based on top stuff he bought from you. Unlike with alpakkas, you either have it or you don't.
Why do they want to make the age requirement public? This can be discretely discussed with the HR department and just filter anyone over xx age out automatically.
Imagine the money that can be saved by using old but completely useful computers instead of upgrading every couple of years when it is unneeded... (and spending more money on licenses for new versions of Office and Windows and etc.)
I would guess that most of your fellow slashdotters would agree with you. I would also guess that the marketing departments of Dell, HP and every other company that actively pushes their stuff to universities would insist that they need to continue riding the upgrade carousel. And they often have far more access to the people responsible for buying stuff. And more (economic) incentive to work hard to make often technically clueless people buy the latest and greates four way opteron desktops/whatever for their school. So, yes, it would be nice, but I don't see it happening on a big scale unless some university gets *a lot* of press on how many millions they saved thanks to LTSP.
When I play and use voice comm, I use Ventrilo. When I (or some of my colleagues) work from home, we use Ventrilo to conference, it works very well!
Ventrilo is also free.
Man, I love ventrilo, too bad there isn't a linux client. It's perfect since you can set up your own server (which runs on linux), and keep it private, unlike skype (i think).
Me: Uh, yeah. That's why it's called "USB". It stands for "Unbelievable Speed Bus".
Customer: Really? Haha! You computer guys always have clever names for things...
He was prpbably imagining some kind of yellow school bus with the driver in a roadrage, plowing the pavement at 200mph...
Instead of trying to track the spammer down by IP trace and whatnot, go after (try to buy?) the product that is being advertised, because someone at that end almost certainly has been in contact with the spammer. Subpoena their bank transactions, see who they paid that $2000 to for advertising services. Or even better if the spammer advertises his own stock of merchandise. Then you can just nail him directly... But I'm sure someone is going point out why thiu wouldn't work...
It would show you the entire movie at once, since the fourth dimension is time.

What exactly do their Thinkpad configurations have to do with their support of Linux? Last I checked, Linux was originally developed for x86. . .
:)
It would be sweet though... Imagine having a ~600 mhz IBM pda with linux & wifi... I'd buy one

A 100Mbits router is sufficient for me, I could make a lot more use of 450,000 bucks.
But with $450,000 you'd soon end up buying stuff that could use such a nice little router. And then what? Save up and buy a 92Tbps router..?
Now, if only I could get it to work with Wine... :(
Works for me.
He has a point, mod+5 insightful.

I'll second that. Spamgourmet is nice, I get no spam... :)
They probably run NT. :)
thanks to spamgourmet.

Maybe they did, and someone noticed?

Wow, that is so amazing!
No, wait...

I was gonna say the same thing, but mod the parent up instead.

If SCO is going after everything unix, why haven't they touched osX yet?
Because OS X is the bastard son of a bastard son of the one true UNIX.
The schooling system already lacks humanity, why de-humanize it even more?
Because the humans that work there are lacking in the skills department?
