I can see the Mac thing entirely, but if you're talking PC, why wouldn't you install XP? (Assuming that *nix or *BSD systems are out of the question here.) Win2k was an OS for the more technically competent. I've been running WinXP Professional pretty much since it was released and the *only* time I've had a BSOD is when it was a hardware issue. My only other issues with it have been memory related when I was running on a pretty crappy machine, and it just slowed things down which was more of an annoyance than anything.
Microsoft is evil... blah blah... yes they've got security holes... I'd really like to hear your reason to "sure as hell not be installing XP. Maybe 2000."
Every now and then (maybe two or three times a week, though sometimes I don't do it at all in a given week) when I go out for lunch at work I order a 32 oz. of Bud Light cuz it's cheap and gives me a bit of a buzz. The only downside is that I always seem to get more tired than usual after lunch if I have a beer. I go for the 32 oz. because it's like $3.25 and a bottle is almost as expensive, and one bottle wouldn't give me a buzz.
It definitely does. I clicked over to A9 from the link and it said "Hello [my name]. Click here if this is not you." When I've never been to the site before, but I do have an Amazon cookie sitting around.
I wonder how many cable/DSL services that eliminates. I have cable from a pretty big provider and their TOS states you can't host servers and blah blah... but the upstream is capped at a disappointing 128k, so I couldn't really run a server if I wanted to.
No, I don't think there is bitching about that. However, if you RTFA, Microsoft is actually using the call letters of the radio stations along with the stations' slogans to promote their own stuff.
Given Microsoft's own stance on such things, I imagine they'll have no problem coughing up licensing fees to use the call letters and slogans of the 900+ radio stations they're copying.
Or maybe the guy just doesn't have much to say? Engadget seems to be a pretty good source of news and slashdot's linked to more than just 2 of their articles.
Maybe when it comes to US Passports, but there's no unified method between states for how a driver's license is made, and if there was it probably wouldn't be much of a secret.
Score:5, Insightful? If this were a Linux distro getting an update, this would be marked as a Troll or Flamebait. At the very least, Funny would be more appropriate.
Ah, young grasshopper. The "street legal" article linked to should be read before you post such silly quips. The Slate article is referring to the fact that many SUVs break the 6,000 pound barrier which makes them "heavy" trucks, and thus would be barred from a lot of roads (in CA at least). Of course this law is universally unenforced against SUV drivers, just people that drive trucks. It must be nice to get a tax break and break the law and not get in trouble for it all at the same time.
Are these outsourced workers going to be working on the same Windows code that Microsoft claimed would be a national security risk if it was ever exposed? Anyone else remember that?
BS. I dare you to put a stock 98se install on an unprotected line. Time how long it takes for it to be owned. Probably under 30 minutes or so.
The last time I did that it was more like 30 seconds. I didn't even have time to get to windowsupdate to download patches... ended up having to format that sucker again and take it in to work where it was on a nice, protected network.
Wellll... if you RTFA he says he has a huge ass fan in there but apparently with the space inside of the... contraption he's put together he hasn't found a need for it.
Interesting. I wonder if it was the/. effect... at first I got the "MSN Search is temporarily unable to process your request." that a number of others posted about, so I tried again and did in fact get the "Sorry..." message. I can't seem to get beyond the error message now, though.
If this "techpreview" is anything how it's going to turn out, this search is teh suck.:)
Despite the first amendment, there are restrictions on what you can say in America.
Slander and libel, that's about it.
Let me tell you a story.
So are you going to tell me the happy ending that your aunt learned she needs to not let kids do whatever the hell they want on the computer, and that they ought to be supervised in the absence of "cyber nanny" style software?

Quadratic equation... it's sort of coming back to me now. I knew there was a reason I slept in math class.
I would agree with it being cool if I understood any of what you just said. :\

Who are we fighting on Mars? Wait, lemme guess--TERRORISTS.
Seriously.
RTFA... it was a 25-minute preview.
Also see EverQuest II, which has their character manager on the shelf as the pre-release box you can purchase.
So *that's* how they sneak in video games into versions of Excel!

The story about the whole Church of the Painted Breast thing has been on 419eater.com for quite some time now. It's long, but certainly amusing.
Offtopic, but really... a novelty sight with 100's of 1000's of readers is some novelty. Like a sex shop?
