  1. WTF on Gates Mocks MIT's $100 Laptop · · Score: 1

This is making me think he only gives money to charities to improve his PR. But now I just think he's an asshole with a stick up his ass, if he didn't have a monopoly on software, then software prices wouldn't be any where near as expensive as they are now. Infact I suspect OSS wouldn't even have half the support it does if it wasn't free software which works damn well.

The people getting these laptops are the sort of people who have never heard of a PC outside of people traveling, other than reporters and celebrities they have probably never even seen technology beyond a basic projector or TV. They don't need to have half the crap he suggested, just a simple game they can play where they learn to read and write (dear Grammar nazis, fuck off before you even start on me today). Give them a way to read a dictionary, an e-book or just see the world outside their shanty town/close walk.

We often forget that people outside our own countries don't know much about the outside world except people comming into give them support or raise their PR. Now with these lap tops they stand a chance of learning more about not only themselvs but the entire world and while the knowledge gained won't be up to "adult level" for another 10-20 years, to make a huge difference. It's a small step on the way to fixing a lot of "class" type problems around the world. These are the super low class, all they desire to be is low class, so why not train them to be working class and give them the skills they need to not only achieve this but also to survive in a world which forgets them untill they're standing at the edge of a cliff Lemmings style

You never heard of weebles did you? "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down" was the tag line. A kids toy you repeatedly knocked over only to see it stand up again.

In the 80s toys like Action man/GI Joe was popular. These ran around with guns and tries to kill each other. Movies like Die hard (still awesome but proves the point) were made full of people shooting each other. Games often involved people running around shooting aliens or people. Bionic commando and such.

In the 90s we had Ninja turtles who kicked the crap out of everything. Movies which blew everything up, music which told you raping babies was fun and "bling" was more important than life it's self. Games for even worse and it became standard to shoot other people, watch them gib and then loot their corpses.

So this decade really doesn't seem quite so bad when you consider it's just a silly flash game made by the same people who made Alien Homindid and hosted on a site known for being... rather demented.

I perfer Nihon/Nippon as a name yes. It sounds better and such, but the point is you still don't translate names. You wouldn't expect Japan to translate "BBC" for example, it would just be what it is.

Also I'm pretty sure most places will have a different term for May and Ruby is an object, hence would have it's own name in these languages.

It's just a fundamental rule of translating.. names remain as they are and if you want you put the meaning after it. For example "Nihon Keizai Shinhun (Japanese business newspaper)" would of been much better, but as it is, I'd rather see a name kept "pure", since it is after all a name.

Never translate names, ever. You only confuse people.

We can do it with English names if you wish.

    Ruby - "Hello red stone"
May - "Hello period of days of a defined number"

It makes no sense to translate a name, because a name is a name. It transends languages and stays the same no matter what you say it in.

You've not seen roms sits lately have you? GBA is cracked like a whore with a needle in her arm.

The reason pokemon sells so well to people who can pirate stuff (like myself) is that it feels better on a handheld, we get to keep our pokemon even if our PCs crash, we can still play the games for years and such. Basicly the content is superior on a portable, so we pay for a good portable RPG. The merchandise and anime are aimed more at children, but don't think they're the only reason the games sell.

Pokemon is one of them strange popular series which is damn good. It takes a classic theme (monster/bug/demon/whatever collecting) and does it really well. It's deep enough for hardcore RPG players (lots of various hidden stats, move combos and such), while still being simple enough that with some basic common sense (replace old moves with better ones, use the right types against the right monsters) that you can brute force your way through the game.

A lot of slashdotters were probably bullied (I was) and although it may bring up some bad memories, we don't play GTA because we're secretly drug dealers, or black guys riding a bike through the street as we shoot people. We play them because they're fun, which is what games should be about.

People never complained Mario is full of drug refrences (You can't deny it, please don't try), or that killing aliens in Contra is too violent for children. Back when games were mostly aimed at kids (or geeks with an Amiga), we never heard any of this shit.. Makes me really wonder.

I'd love to meet these people complaining and go "Jump off a bridge" so they could tell me "no" and I could reply with "Well if I can't influence you in person how the hell are games ment to convince me when I have full control of them?

The screenshots in the article really do seem selected to avoid showing this, but a couple show you how bad it is (http://www.dyingduck.com/sotc/3dwa03.jpg for example).

It's a great game and I'm not trying to put it down, but it's the type of game which the PS2 just can't do justice to, so instead all the blur effects mentioned are covering it up.
