On the other hand, the decision-makers in the corporation are people, and one would hope that they as individuals are primarily interested in benefitting the world.
I see no reason why that would be the case. My primary interest in life is not to benefit the world. It's to follow my ultimately selfish interests while being fair to other people. You sound like Jim Taggart or something;)
What do you do when the modem has a USB connection? There are no adapters that will take a USB signal and change it to an ethernet signal for your NIC.
Windows 2000 does have basic packet filtering. It's MCSE, and I don't think MCSA was a typo. You obviously have no idea what it is. I am forced to run our webserver on Win2k at work, and there's no firewall between it and the outside (not my choice). All ports except 21 and 80 are blocked.
It doesn't matter if you can get a Super-Athlon 2.6 Ghz at half the price of a PowerMac if the OS sucks.
Not many people will say that Windows sucks. Windows XP and 2000 are quite functional, stable, and just damned easy. A P4 2.4 GHz with half a gig of RAM and a 17" monitor from Dell costs LESS than that eMac with a 700 MHz processor and 128 MB of RAM. And let me tell you, Windows XP, even will all the eye candy turned on, feels far, far faster on the 2.4 GHz P4 than OS X does on a 700 MHz G4.
The web site is what it is, a bunch of editors no better informed than most of the people who post comments posting stuff that gets page hits and replies.
Don't like it, go troll the ZDnet talkback forums.. they DO have an obligation as journalists.
Do you think they would have made those billions if they slowed down the development cycle so much as to eliminate most of the bugs in their operating systems?
If they slowed it down to a large degree *now* in order to do this, don't you think Linux and other OSs have a legitimate shot at taking over?
MS will do whatever MS decides will let it maintain its position in the marketplace, and God bless them for it.
No, the logic is that we have been shown repeatedly that the MPAA and RIAA will stop at nothing to show that the internet is a huge problem and that laws need to be passed to limit it.
I have several computers at work. I recently adopted a Blue G3 350 MHz with 512 MB RAM. I installed OS X on this machine. My primary machine is a 300 MHz Pentium 2 with 256 MB RAM.. this one runs Windows XP.
I tried using the OS X machine as my primary computer. I really wanted to. After a couple of days, however, the abject slowness of this computer with OS X was totally unbearable. Windows XP on a 300 MHz Pentium 2 is useable.. some applications may be slow, but the OS is FAR more responsive than OS X on the G3. Web browsing is an order of magnitude faster on the XP machine as well.
You're the asshole going 10mph and cutting back and forth across the entire slope who doesn't hear me say "on your left!" and slams into me while I'm doing 45.
Since you didn't read the FAQ like I said, here it is from Mr Slashdot himself:
Personally, I have a pet peeve when people post comments saying things like "That's not News For Nerds!" and "That's not Stuff that Matters!" Slashdot has been running for almost 5 years, and over that time, I have always been the final decision maker on what ends up on the homepage. It turns out that a lot of people agree with me: Linux, Legos, Penguins, Sci (both real and fiction). If you've been reading Slashdot, you know what the subjects commonly are, but we might deviate occasionally. It's just more fun that way. Variety Is The Spice Of Life and all that, right? We've been running Slashdot for a long time, and if we occasionally want to post something that someone doesn't think is right for Slashdot, well, we're the ones who get to make the call. It's the mix of stories that makes Slashdot the fun place that it is.
The home page is whatever Malda wants to make it. Slashdot started as Rob Malda's pet project, and that's basically what it will always be. It's an obscenely popular project and makes some money (maybe) now, but it's still his personal project.
Deal with it. No one, especially Rob, cares what you think "should" be on the main page.
I see no reason why that would be the case. My primary interest in life is not to benefit the world. It's to follow my ultimately selfish interests while being fair to other people. You sound like Jim Taggart or something
the "-1, Wrong" mod category?
That's a NIC that attaches to your PC via USB instead of the typical PCI slot.
They don't go the other way. Period.
That's great.
What do you do when the modem has a USB connection? There are no adapters that will take a USB signal and change it to an ethernet signal for your NIC.
What you're talking about is just a USB NIC.
What on earth is a USB to Cat 5 converter? The concept doesn't even make sense.
I think his concern is that a USB only connection would require a driver, and hence possibly be tied to supported Windows versions.
However, a CAT 5 connection would be able to be used with just about any OS you like, or with a hardware firewall or router.
Is it me, or does it seem that if you have a real *choice*, then there is no monopoly?
I thought the essence of a monopoly was that there was no viable choice to be made.

Check out Dell Small Business. Just last week I bought 4 P4 2.4 GHz desktops with 512 MB of RAM, CD burners, and 17" monitors for $698 each.
How much will it cost you to learn not to split infinitives?

With 82 watts of heat produced, I don't think you need to overclock it at all for that to happen.
Michael is an editor.
:)
You're not.
Michael gets to decide what is on the homepage, not you.
Read the FAQ, and find another site if you don't like this one
I notice that you're fairly new here!

Did you forget once?

I got 147671, but I didn't take down the specifics.. I'm leaving the game open til he re-enables the online high score though ;)

So take a mobile P4 2.4GHz, downclock it to 1 GHz, and it's probably using less wattage than that 800 MHz G3.
