I agree! Quakeworld and CTF.. Those were the days! Nothing has come close to the feel that the original Quake had/has. I loved the DM1-DM6 maps.. Then I discovered CTF and all of my free time was gone. As for the sounds, let's not forget the best.. The sounds made when someone was totally gibbed and if a pool was near by, you'd hear the pieces splashing into it. The sounds never got old and I always laughed when it was particularly splashy. A major improvement to Quake was with the show weapon mod (which was later incorporated into the core game). I still load up Quakeworld to get back to my roots.

I think the future is obvious with this plan. SOE will eventually create items which can only be purchased by real money. (It would not be a drop off any creatures for example). These items would have some significant power and 'wow' factor coolness via animated / high quality graphics. They would most likely make these items no-trade so people couldn't sell / give them away in game (forcing players to buy the item for each of their characters. Imagine being able to buy a Pegasus flying mount which can't be obtained any other way? Or some neat looking undead / skeletal horse mounts)? Eventually, you'll be able to buy NPC's who follow you and assist you in battle. Perhaps buy a castle and an army to support you?
SOE has taken the first steps in this direction and I am sure we'll see unique items for sale in the next 12 months. You can bet that if I thought of this potential cash cow, that people at SOE have thought of it and are counting on it as a source of revenue.

Looks like they added some neat sounding features and packaged it i a neat looking package. They give you gigabit switch ports for LAN. This is more hype than anything as the majority of the traffic will be rolling out to the internet and a much slower rate (via the 10/100 WAN port). Even if you wanted to play locally, the gigabit speed would do nothing to improve play. (but hey, it's nice to have and who knows what the future holds)
They added some firewall policy content for current popular internet games so you don't need to configure ports which I suppose is a plus for most players.
It provides wireless connectivity as well. Since they are holding the hand of users in the firewall port configuration, I am hoping they stress wireless security concerns. Overall it looks like a nice device.

Of course they all do. This is a simple approach. All manufacturers agree to tell the public that a few bad pixels are acceptable. This allows them all to lower their tolerances and dump LCDs to the public which contain these "acceptable" bad pixels. The public pays for new, pristine quality electronics and the public should receive nothing less than pristine quality products. If I had a bad pixel on my new display, you can certainly bet that I'd be returning it for a replacement.
It shows you just how powerful companies can be at tempering the public's expectations when they can convince customers to accept such things. I don't imagine any company would use a display with a bad pixel in advertising for the product (ads, trade shows, etc) so why should they expect the public to accept anything less that a perfect display?

Games are just another form of electronic entertainment, similar to movies, TV shows and even the news broadcasts.
It is the responsibility of the parents to monitor what their children play, view and do during their formative years. The issue is that adults are not involved enough in the lives of their children and so, are oblivious to what may be affecting them. (and this does not stop at video games). I am not aware of any cases involving kids and violent crimes where there were the usual warning signs and/or uninvolved/out of touch parents.
My 13 year old son has been hounding me for months to be allowed to buy/play the various GTA games (because his friends have it). I've explained to him why we're not allowing him to play them. This extends to movies as well. I'm pretty laid back when it comes to restricting what my kids watch/do but I DO have limits to what I'll allow and I ALWAYS discuss my decisions with my kids. I allow my son to play some games involving shooting America's Army for example) but draw the line when the theme is a little too mature.
The biggest thing I do is I ensure that I try to be aware of what he is doing (and remember that I'll not always know everything), communicate with him and show that I trust him (aware that mistakes will be made).
