This chip is a CPU. It consumes almost no power when idle. Most of the time my CPU is idle, but there are other components in my computer that should be idle even more, like my sound card, the 3d component of my video card, etc. Could a clockless chip be used in these applications as well?
You are doing the 'Orwellian doublethink' (or maybe you've been blinded by fanboyism). I use Linux on my main machine, and occasionally use a Mac mini. The Mac desktop is a little better, but to say that OS X is years ahead of Linux is ridiculous.
When I first saw this new slashdot theme, I thought: "Wow. It's finally happened. Taco has completely lost his mind." But, just a few seconds ago, I realized the date.
cruachan, I appreciate what you tried to do, but it was obvious to me from the original comment that this guy was nuts. 100,000 year cycles because of the earth's 'circular to elliptical orbit changes'? Yeah, right.
Interesting... there may be some truth in the psychological bits. People in many fields are predicting a disaster, a catastrophe, impending doom -- it makes sense that this is related more to their psychological state than actual scientific research in their specific fields.
The scientific bits are absolute nonsense. The idea that the recent warming trend indicates an impending little ice age is laughable. His statements regarding the 'hockey stick' climate change graph are completely wrong. It didn't artificially flatten previous changes in temperature, they just appeared flat because the recent change in temperature has been so big. Further, the 'hockey stick' graph was not used to generate the Kyoto protocols, they used many different studies from many sources. Even if the 'hockey stick' graph were disproven, there would be still be plenty of evidence that the world is getting warmer.
This post hits one of my pet peeves. Whenever someone talks about racism, the only POSSIBLE victim can be black. In this case, you are quick to point out the condescension, and thus say that this attitude is harmful to blacks, without even mentioning all the white people who are victims of black racism. This happens everywhere. People always mention how affirmative action is bad for blacks, because they're let into schools where they can't succeed because they're outperformed by all the people who didn't receive affirmative action there, and don't even mention all the white people who didn't get into that school so that the blacks could be let in.
This is utter nonsense. If race is just a 'construct', and there is no biological difference between races, how do you explain the whole skin color thing? Dumbass.
Dude, I just googled 'round, firm, tanned buttocks' expecting to get either a) some good porno or b) some good furry porno. Instead, I got a story in Salon about exercising for firm buns, and a post from some gay blogger called "In defense of the male butt". WTF?
I can't move to India, the immigration system is far more difficult there. Even if I could, why should I? At my college, sometimes I thought the whole computer science department was Indian. When I would wait outside the tech support room, they weren't speaking English, they were speaking Hindi, or something. It might as well be India.
Also, most Indian programmers make much less than five dollars an hour. But, the cost of living is so much lower, they are still able to maintain a middle class lifestyle on their salary. Although, a middle class lifestyle in India is probably different from a middle class lifestyle in America.
"You lose the conveniences and diversity of a big city."
Well, the "diversity" of the big city, and the things it brings with it (crime, etc.) may be a reason to want to move to the country. Notice, though, I said "may" be. I'm not sure myself, but it is something to think about.
Bravo!!! Finally, someone who knows something about telemarketing. I worked for a telemarketing company for 5 years. We never paid attention to any "do not call" list. Groups like EPIC who convince people that these lists will change anything are either extremely naive or trying to con them into donating money.
You'll get marked as a troll because you are a troll. What's the point of saying something like that in a discussion about star wars? The point of trolling is trolling, I guess.
That is totally, completely ridiculous. You are almost three times as likely to die if there's a gun in your house than if there isn't. If guns had some amazing self defense value where only.1 % (!) of the time you had to actually shoot it, then the mortality rate would be lower because if there's a gun in your house, you could defend yourself from murder better. Just from googling it (which apparently you can't be bothered to do), I believe you're referring to "Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review". In this paper, the conclusion is that there is no strong evidence that right to carry laws either increase crime, or decrease crime. They conclude that more research must be carried out. I'm inclined to agree. Guns don't increase crime, but they don't decrease crime, either. If you want to go around waving a gun, thinking it makes you safer, go ahead, but don't blame me when that gun blows up in your face.
Oh, I see. He didn't want to say it was acceptable (because it isn't) but he just wanted to say that it wasn't unacceptable. It's not all the way there toward acceptable, but still not unacceptable either. Because, you know, acceptable is such a good thing, and you wouldn't want to say something was acceptable if it wasn't. We should all strive towards acceptability, not be merely not unacceptable, but truly *acceptable*. Wow.
Why is this funny? Can some Norwegian translate this for me? In fact, I would say I'm fairly surprised that there are enough Norwegians on Slashdot to get this joke. Or is there something I'm missing?
Some people never stop worrying. When the birthrate is too high, they say "Oh no! Overpopulation will destroy the planet!" When it's too low, they say "Oh no! We can't pay for our services because of an inverted demographic pyramid!" Stop worrying so much. I'm sure we can do all right by ourselves, without letting in a bunch of foreign workers.
They shouldn't have a younger actor playing the role of Indy, they should have a younger actor playing a different person having adventures in the indy universe.
Rather than making it Indy's son, as others have suggested, it should be: Short Round! I love that actor! He was also in The Goonies and he played Jasper on Head of the Class.
That would be so awesome! Anyone want to help me start a petition?
When I read this story, one thing popped into my head: Is there any erotic interactive fiction? (There is definitely enough amateur erotic non-interactive fiction.) If so, where can I get it?
Almsot all of the sites returned for thoses searches are about sex addiction. The only erotic content I saw was playboy. People already know about playboy; if that's what they want, they don't need to search for it.
This just reinforces my conception that a sex search engine is needed.

Your race and culture did more than insult ours -- it killed 3,000 people on September 11, 2001.
This is modded funny, but I don't think it is. In all seriousness, I would be doing the exact same thing.

I think this is a troll. The idea that there has been less media coverage of Enron than welfare fraud is absurd on its face.

You, sir, are my hero.
So, you made some poor girl cry. Good for fucking you. You are a complete jackass.

Hmm. At first I was interested in erotic interactive fiction, but now, for some reason, I can't even think of reading one of these things. Oh, well.
