Like the governments of Europe did to organize the greatest mass slaughter of humankind in history? You self-righteous Europeans crack me up, you people are by FAR the biggest mass-murderers in history and yet you pretend to be all high and mighty and condemn other nations who don't do killing nearly as efficient as Europe.
Um, the daemons don't run under the user's UID, so if the user's account becomes compromised, the attacker cannot escalate privileges unless he also figures out a way to hijack the daemon. That is what I was talking about, not saying that no processes run under admin privileges. So I guess you are the one that should be mocked.
0 run with escalated privileges because the users aren't admins, and they don't need "admin rights" to certain programs. The Microsoft model is, and always has been, severely flawed. I couldn't believe the hoops we had to go through just to get a scanner working on a windows box. We had to grant the users groups admin privileges on the app that ran the scanner, which of course increases the chances of getting owned significantly.
In the OS X world, other than perhaps needing an admin to install the software, the users have no problem using peripherals and don't need us to grant the programs that use said devices extra privileges. That is just fundamentally insecure. Granting admin rights to a program instead of user is unheard of in the land of real operating systems.
Are you sure it was the application writer's bad practices that forced many apps to require admin privileges? Because the phenomenon of having to run most day to day apps as an admin seems to be limited to Windows. We run an all Mac/Linux shop with 100+ workstations and dozens of servers and we do some pretty complex stuff and NONE of our users has to be an admin to get their job done. That is just unheard of in the Windows world, but has been the norm in the *nix world for the past 2 decades.....
It wasn't really the smell per se, it was the mixture of rotting food and harsh cleaning chemicals that caused a lot of the people to vomit. The warning labels on those things are pretty lengthy.
Actually, you have to be careful because there are some terminal masters degrees in CS/EE etc, and even some good schools sometimes offer them. The terminology is a big confusing, and can differ from institution to institution, but generally a Masters of Science in Computer Science is not terminal, whereas a Masters of Computer Science is terminal. The difference seems to lie mostly with your thesis, Masters of Science courses tend to require a deep, academically rigorous thesis whereas Masters of Computer Science either has a test or project as the final requirement. As always, make sure you consult the school about your program before jumping in.
Your point is valid, but you are missing the bigger picture. There are tons of people who need to know more about databases other than its a place where data is stored, but still do not need to get into the nitty-gritty details because they aren't DBAs by profession. I do some basic DB work as part of being an application developer, and it's important to understand database concepts and db performance, but its certainly not imperative that I learn everything there is to know about databases.
Not to mention the time constraints, if I can flip through a book like this and get the basic picture, it can save me massive amounts of time vs. slogging through massive amounts of technical documents, and will be more memorable to boot. By drilling down the basic concepts, I can quickly google the specifics I need to know and be more apt to understand what I read.
Not really, full disk encryption along with BIOS security does provide a pretty good defense against attackers with physical access. Now granted if they are standing in your office I guess they could just beat you over the head with your motherboard until you tell them the password but....
where links are checked before they are submitted/published? Or are you just relying on the open-source crowd to tell you that you get a 404 when you click on the 2nd link?
Actually, singing along may just be the way to get them to stop listening to their player, or, depending on how bad your singing is, not listen to the song you sang ever again.
The difference is that the market for two types of games(casual, short vs. full blown) have a lot of overlap. There are genres that I enjoy, such as tower games, but not to the point where I am willing to buy a full game, however I plunked down $7.99 for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for my iPhone. However, genres and games I really do enjoy I want a much more engrossing experience and am willing to pay for such, for example Zelda games. Nintendo, by currently only catering to the full blown part of the market is missing lots of revenue, they really want to be the "one stop shop" for all types of portable games.
But consider the distribution problems that mud presents. With a scanner/copier I can scan my butt and send it round the world in seconds, lets see mud do that!
Plus, you insert a mud imprint of your butt into your boss's presentation.
So she is able to use windows to do something

Damnit, there goes my.... I mean my friends....vacation. Now what are we supposed to do?

Screw the speed strips, what he needs is some speed holes. It will make the computer faster too.
While you succeed at being snarky, you fail at being correct.
Dude, I think you came up with a new motto for slashdot!

but I have the Slashdot RSS feed in Apple's mail, and the ad for this particular article was "gaythugdating.com", they have this crowd pegged :P
Seriously, if all you are worried about is her getting porn ads when she doesn't want them, just use adblock.
was a diminutive for an STD when you read it? "Stay away from her, she has a roaring case of Syfy".
god damnit, I'm tired of having to risk getting arrested just to get a blurry up-skirt shot, I want to be able to have my camera see through anything!
NASA delays shuttle out of sheer habit
Load them up with porn and give them to random people anonymously. They will thank you for it!
