I have been using it in raid5 on a file server running centos3.3 first and then fedora3 and its just terrible.. to the point of unusable.

There is a thread on redhat bugzilla relating to the 3ware performance problems that is almost a year old and still no resolution afaik (although I haven't yet tried rhel4).

Just about to order a replacement so this article was well timed indeed!

Is there anything/enough in rhel4 that isn't in fc3 to make it worth the upgrade? I'm using fc3 on a file server at the moment (switched from centos3.3 after endless problems with a 3ware9500 which fc3 only partially solved).

Anyone know if they fixed this rather serious problem yet?

May as well just fix/upgrade the one thats up there.

I have centos 3.3 installed on my old toshiba laptop.. chose the 'minimal' centos installation to keep it small and light since its not exactly a speed demon laptop and disk space was quite limited.

I then installed xfce (previous version) manually (one annoying dependency at a time ;)) on top of it. As it was a minimal centos install I had no kde, gnome or any other graphical desktop thingy installed.. so now its just xfce with whatever dependencies it required..

There were many many dependencies to install but still it zips along nicely now with none of the useless clutter that normally seems to come with 'all things to all people' desktop environments these days.

Its not such a bad idea to make security cameras publicly viewable (although allowing the public to conrtol them is another matter) for example it essentially gives you a whole world full of witnesses to whatever events may happen..

Lets say your local friendly 'protection' dude wanders in to your shop one day asking for money 'or else'.. you can either..

    a) inform him that his every move is being watched by a million slashdotters..

    b) pull your gun out from under the counter and blow his brains out - then tell the police there's plenty of witnesses to interview.. ;)
