The One Laptop per Child program isn't aimed at the television-owning, entertainment-consuming upper class (i.e. possible fat kids). The kids in question are unhealthy because they are diseased, starving, being shot at (maybe not), etc. Why the hell is the Indian HRD talking about back and eye problems? It's not as if those problems will make much of a difference in the lives of the children in question (they don't make a difference in mine, at any rate).

And as for budget concerns, India will be much richer when its kids become as educated (or something) as the kids in the west.

I'm not sure there's a point to psychology. Isn't that subject-matter more rigorously covered in neuroscience? Or does psychology cover mind while neuroscience covers brain?

Of course, psychology does have some study that follows the scientific method (rat-maze experiments, for instance), but how can you trust a subject that claims to be a "science" and yet has differing opinions, like philosophy, which is not experimental. I know scientists have arguements, but psychology really seems to have lots of theories going around, and not too many proofs.

I know that personality tests are not the only field of psychology, but I do not understand why we even study something that doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose. Feel free to change my mind.

I've had issues with my linux geek friend in the past (programming languages and what belongs in the tolkien canon are the major ones I can think of. welcome to slashdot) He insists that linux was something like the most complicated thing in existance. I wonder if it's a coincidence that he tells people how much he understands it?

My dad's a tech guy (his girlfriend broke up with him because he "wasted" money on a PC, instead of a trip to Europe - this was back in the day). He suceeded in installing Suse Linux Personal 9.2, and it worked, but it was not receiving the network signal. He searched for help and the driver, but basically suse's help assumed a great knowledge of linux was already within your system. Admittedly, the fact that a lot of support was in German didn't help either. But my father, who was editor for a tech magazine, now is a fervent believer in linux dying. He doesn't want it to, but he believes it's run by hackers who don't care about the average user. Now this is a guy who went to an Ivy, has lived tech for a while, and everyone believes is a genius (sadly, I only inherited the second trait). Because of all this, I think the linux community definitely leans toward the anti-noob side. These are only two examples though, so who knows?

The answer, to me, seems obvious. Most people in Africa live shitty lives. They've no where to go but up, not that its easy to get there. Most people in America live (comparitively) nice lives. They've got more room below them than above them (if you will, for a moment, visualize the "happiness spectrum"). So we probably have less hope for a "better tomorrow." Also, I'm pretty sure there isn't much pressure to succeed in Poor Random East African Village. In America (and Japan), success is more readily available, and thus the pressure to achieve it is higher because you look incompetent if you don't succeed. In Africa, to use a generalization, you have almost no chance of succeeding anyway. For purposes of this post, success/points on the happiness spectrum = making more than a living wage and not having a "stronger" mental disorder than ADD (points increase as wages rise and mental disorders fall).
