Well... there are geeks and then there are geeks. My wife is not a technology geek. Matter of fact she is an artist and a bit of a crunchy granola type. But, she is smart and we share the same sense of humor about most things. Humor seems to be the strongest bridge to build a relationship on. We are both curious about the other persons area of expertise, learn from each other and contribute to each others work.
BTW.... we met at a mutual friends Halloween party. Neither of us was 'looking' but we found each other anyway.
Same old NULL-Speak as you get from all the wannabes. Reminds me of my days trying to gather requirements from customers at a Fortune 500 company. Vague, contridictory and looking for a position of deniability. Meh.
Small form factor laptops are great for travel if all you need to do is email, web, etc. I used to use a Powerbook 2400c back in the day. Today my travel machine is an Dell Latitude LS loaded with Zenwalk. It's only a PIII/256/20 but runs just fine with the lightweight distro and didn't cost me anything since someone gave it to me (found when cleaning out a student rental... thanks rich kid!). The big advantage it has over the Asus is the keyboard and screen (21.1") and still weighs in at only a bit over three pounds. Wireless didn't work with the first two cards I tried (Linksys revB and Orinoco Silver) but picked right up on the old 3COM 802.11b card and has worked every time since.
Having worked (past tense) for a few years for a wireless ISP in the 900MHz and 2.4 GHz spectrums I respectfully disagree. They both suck to work in. 900 is maybe a bit worse since it is harder to pinpoint the cause of interference. We had a case where it was a 900MHz phone 2 miles from the base station that was knocking us out. Even with the help of a BumbleBee directional analyzer it took weeks to run down. Swapped them for a fancy new 5.8GHz phone and the problem went away but not before we lost customers over it.
"Have any developers here successfully lobbied their company to stop or cut back on 'cowboy coding' and adopt best practices? Has anyone convinced their superiors that the customer isn't always right and saying no once in awhile is the best course of action?"
Not successfully. No.
"Is this to say that the Mac Plus is a better computer than the AMD? Of course not. The technological advancements of 21 years have placed modern PCs in a completely different league of varied capacities. But the "User Experience" has not changed much in two decades.'
The point they are trying to make is that while hardware has advanced considerably and software has added capability the actually base user interface and thus user experience has not changed much in 20 years. The authors don't go into the "why" and do show some personal bias and opinion... but they have a point... and, yes, I still own a functioning MacPlus.
Attempted copyright infringement? When we can't get our elected officials charged with real, already committed and documented crimes? What is going on in this country!?!
How about implanting them in our elected and appointed Ferderal Officials? We could GPS them and plot them on something like Google Maps. Anyone interested could look them up and see where they are! Are they in Washington D.C. working or are they in St Barts on a "fact finding" junket?
Security? The security risk would be part of the job.
I know what you mean... mine was a Timex Sinclair 100. Still have it. Still works. I keep hoping my son will show interest in programming so that I can break it out for him (along with the Apple][c i've been saving all these years).
Wow. MicroSoft has managed to come up with an incredible disincentive to actually fix the basic security flaws in their products. One has to wonder how this is going to impact the patching program: will patches now require a subscription to Microsoft's Windows OneCare Live?
Except for the name change and the "officialness" of the media circus this is the same story as was posted on December 12. This really isn't news... just a press release.

... MY job went to India.
4. New company off-shores your job to save money.
At least that seems to be the CSC model. I don't know about HP.
...marrying your 13 year-old first cousin will still be OK!
Cool! I want mine to change into Frenzy!
Oscar. Mike. Foxtrot. Golf.

Yeah. Me too. I was going to switch from Verizon DSL (which apparently stands for "Doesn't Stay up for Long") but it looks like TW now.
Those tax cuts are starting to pay off for me.
Ditto. BOINC was so bad I went back to the SETI client until end of life... then quit.
Another buggy plugin!

. How old are you? And who is modding today? +5 Insightful on a flame? And it's not even a funny one.
I know one person who still uses Netscape... for mail. Oh, well.
