  1. Amazon's Description on Rockstar's Next Game Draws Protesters · · Score: 2, Insightful

Welcome to the fictional Bullworth Academy where you play a troubled schoolboy named Jimmy in reform school who tries to stand up to bullies, gets picked on by teachers, plays pranks on annoying kids from all over campus, and even tries to pursue a love interest.

Sounds really bad for kids... almost like REAL school. Which isn't dangerous at all, that's why they have metal detectors.

Orson Scott Card, if you put his views aside, is quite a good write. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Bean Series (anything with Shadow in the title). The Alvin series (seventh son) is a tribute to John White, and really kindof scary. It put me off Card for awhile. My one friend who actually read died, so I am left to discover books on my own. I have not discovered anything new and interesting of late, and have spent my time rereading classics. (Zen and the art of motorcycle maintanence, Catch 22, Catcher in the Rye, not really classics but good nonetheless)

Some 20 years later, when our paths finally crossed, I asked Burroughs whether he was writing on a computer yet. "What would I want a computer for?" he asked, with evident distaste. "I have a typewriter." But I already knew that word processing was another of God's little toys, and that the scissors and paste pot were always there for me, on the desktop of my Apple IIc. Burroughs' methods, which had also worked for Picasso, Duchamp, and Godard, were built into the technology through which I now composed my own narratives. Everything I wrote, I believed instinctively, was to some extent collage. Meaning, ultimately, seemed a matter of adjacent data. Is what I got my info from. I wouldn't be surprised that he uses a typewriter though. Have you read his newest book? Pattern Recognition? Any thoughts on it?

I hate to nit pick (not really...) but Burroughs was the one not using a computer. Gibson EMBRACED the Mac. He saw it as the perfect place for blending everything together. It was the ultimate tool for cutting and pasting according to him. Gibson is well known for writing "future" novels. He embraces the current age and looks to see where it is headed. Quite an interesting fellow.

It seems to me that they would just have to set up an average price for every item in the game... and then monitor when things get sold for way over value. Granted, people could slowly bring up the price of an item, but this could be countered by setting up auctions by Blizzard or known non-farmers of every item in the game and getting an approximate price. It wouldn't be too absurdly hard to stop. It would also be useful to ban the people who bought the gold, as it will make the purchasing of in game items outside of the game a risky proposition. Solutions aren't too hard if you are ACTUALLY looking for them. Maybe Blizzard wants people selling items out of game, but maintains a "no tolerance" policy for legal and marketing purposes...

Really, it's quite a crack pot theory, but if it worked just right it could force people to switch to a new OS (or just wait for AMD to increase output...)

I don't think consoles will merge into computer games, i think computers will merge into consoles. Each new generation of game console brings us greater compatibility, PS1 played CDs, PS2 and XBox plays DVDs, the 360 lookes like it is poised to be a complete media system (with possible DVR?)...

As the console becomes more of a part of the home entertainment system and more connected to the internet, why would anyone play computer games? Why play on your screen in your office when you can dedicate your living room to entertainment? Even though you can have "bleeding edge" graphics on a computer, not everyone has the hardware to support it. It is easier for game developers to make games for consoles and profit immediatley, as well as know there limitations (which often aren't reached until the third year of the consoles life span)...

consoles don't need to be upgraded, because it takes awhile for a developer to take complete advantage of the technology in the system.

Also, game developers know EXACTLY the number of their audience by tracking console sales... computer owners may or may not want to play game on their computers, but everyone who buys a PS3 or Xbox 360 is planning on buying at least 1 game for it.

This will eventually create a corporate utopia A corporate utopia? No, no it won't. In an age where ANYONE can have a voice (look at blogs), and any small idea can be accessed by millions, it is hard to create an enviroment where the consumer has little control. Sony, it seems to me, is actually trying to create something that will be able to integrate future technology and *gasp* make a profit off of the switch from our current TV structure to one based around the internet. It's OK for corporations to make money, they can do it and not be evil. Sometimes they do things we do not like to keep themselves in business, but that is survival. We will always have to deal with corporations, but as long as there is competition and free speech, I think consumers will be OK. Yes, soon we might have to pay for acces to "every little thing" but think of it in terms of a restuarant. Currently we face a buffet style type of entertainment, we pay for access to all the items, regardless of how hungry we are. In a "pay per item" type ideal it would be more like a restaurant where you can choose what you want to consume, and only pay for that. It actually, shockingly, may HELP consumers. Companies only exist because people use their services, if they alienate the customers and screw them over, something better will come along.

Look up the tenants of Buddhism (just the four noble truths and the eightfold path)...
