It feels a bit unfair, though. Like we are taking advantage of - or leeching off of - the ignorant people. Not that that stops me. :) I was blocking ads long before adblock and friends by using filtering proxies like privoxy and junkbuster.
Then again, I pay for a lot of those advertisements with my consumer dollars the same way they do.

No, we'd simply mock you for calling it "PERL" instead of "perl". :) But seriously, professional perl programmers are well aware that perl golf (accomplishing something with the smallest number of keystrokes) and writing professional working and maintainable code are two entirely different endeavors. The fact that you don't think so, and that you call it PERL, indicates you haven't really been a part of the perl community or encountered many professional perl programmers.

I'm still waffling over whether to block all articles posted by kdawson. He's obviously not a programmer/gamer type geek like many of us which is why I think he makes such poor story selections. But he doesn't always screw up so I don't want to miss the good submissions that happen to occur on his watch. They should let us filter on tags so I can just block all his bad story submissions that people tag with kdawsonsucks type tags - hrm, or maybe the spectrum color from firehose? Submission moderation, ftw. :)

I'd rather take a candidate that'll tell me the honest truth, even if it isn't popular. Setting a timeline for withdrawl pretty much tells Iran/Al Qaida/whoever else "just lay low for a year and a half, then you'll have free rein." It's naive foreign policy.

If a phased withdrawal causes the violent elements to lay low it is certainly a good thing. That laying low is already occurring to a slight extent due to the "surge". Violent people laying low means less violence, and the less violence the more control the current Iraqi government gains. As the americans pull out, the Iraqi government gains even more power and support from the people. There is no need to support a violent group whose goal is making america leave when the legitimate government is accomplishing the same thing. So a phased withdrawal is not as naive as you pretend.

What I wonder is this: is there a way to take photos as reliable documentary evidence anymore? How can you prove that something has not been altered?

I saw a policeman ticket a women in front of my office for using a handicapped parking spot. He used a polaroid camera - the kind which develops a print on the spot - to take a picture of her vehicle and where it was situated. For a second I was asking myself why he was not just using a cheap digital camera and then it dawned on me that answering your question was likely the reason. :)

It's obviously not ironclad, but it probably lessens the likelihood of the photo having been manipulated if it goes into the evidence bag at the crime scene.

If you're upgrading to the latest stable release from a previous version, please read the release notes before proceeding.

I'm trying really hard to not make some disparaging comments. Let's just say that ubuntu is for those who can't figure out how to install debian. ;)

To be more helpful, it is indeed possible to simply do an "aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade" but it's safer to follow the detailed instructions in the release notes that advise such things as upgrading the kernel first and making a few other precautions that can help resolve some rare problems that can occur. (e.g. if your system happens to get powered off in the middle of the upgrade)

There was a lot of uproar about it at the time that he was exploiting or cheating, but he made an easy target if you manage to get his characters unsynched from each other enough then it was 5 easy pvp kills for my rogue. :D
