  3. Good And Bad... on Walkman Creator Leaves Sony · · Score: 1

Back in 1993 I purchased a black MZ1 MD Walkman while I was over in Japan. The device worked flawlessly, was easy to use and provided me with hours of listening enjoyment. It had optical out and a front loading mechanism which I could forsee jamming or breaking due to regular use; it never did. Years later after I had returned to the U.S. I sold it to a friend in the same box and packaging with a stack of unused blank minidiscs that I had purchased when I bought the Walkman.

Around 2001 I purchased a gold MZ-N505 Walkman and within 30 days it was inoperable. The display went blank and the unit never played another song. During the brief time it did work, I used it a few times while I walked around town and once to play music through powered speakers. The computer-to-minidisc transfer process was just as time-consuming as it was when I had the MZ1 MD and used patch cords to my stereo.

My next portable music player will be integrated into a device that has other features, such as a smartphone or video/music player. For me, the days of buying a device that performs just one task are over.

  8. HOOKED ON BETAS... on Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 Reviewed · · Score: 1

    CONFESSIONS OF A BETA JUNKIE

I loved testing and trying out betas and freeware. After years of mixing and matching betas and watching a stable operating system become unreliable, I saw an opportunity to limit the betas to just one vendor. After a fresh install of WinXP, I wanted to participate in numerous betas from Microsoft which resulted in the decision to format my hard drive and reinstall WinXP again.

On a fresh XP install I tried the Defender Beta 2; no problem. Then I tried the IE 7 Beta 2. Again everything seemed to be going good. Then I also tried the Windows Media Player 11 Beta. At this point I started to get missing SB.dll error messages during startup and several random reboots that Microsoft reported as a 'known video problem'. By this time I had already realized my mistake and was contemplating a format and OS reinstall. Then Vista Beta 2 had become available so I figured I would give it a try. I was never able to d/l the Vista Beta because the demand was so great so I proceeded to format and reinstall XP.

Betas don't tend to play nice with each other and even though I limited myself to just Microsoft betas this time around, I had to face living without them. I really loved my betas, but it always turned out nasty, so my new mantra is to steer clear. Whatever a beta can provide in the form of sneak-peek thrills or enhanced functionality isn't worth the hassle of degraded OS stability.

  19. Hate To Say It... on New Budget NASA Space Science Missions · · Score: 1

What world leader wants to seriously support the development of a sustaining off-world colony? It's not a government's responsibility to build a new world unless the government owns that new world and can profit from it. The involvement of a corporation changes that argument a bit, but the results remain pretty much the same. Think Civilization meets Alien:

    1. Are there resources that can immediately be harvested, mined, collected or gathered? No one wants to spend a colossal amount of money (directly translated from manhours or products sold to generate said money) if that money invested in a colonizing operation won't see an immediate financial return on the investment. Think about the people on Earth working to fund the development of an off-world colony - how are the people going to feel if the effort they produced to get the colony started doesn't show some kind of return that that will impact their daily lives?

    2. Is there a way for these resources to be returned to the government (or corporation) that funded the operation? If the resources collected remain at the colony, again the financial investment to create the colony is a waste of resources for those who funded it's conception. Nearly every colony that has been used for its resources has eventually resisted or attempted to overthrow the governing body enforcing or regulating the use or collection of the resources gathered. Historically, there has always been an uprising.

    3. Where will the loyalty of the new colony reside? It doesn't make a lot of sense for a government or corporation to fund a colonizing expedition only to have the colony defect or rebel. It sounds silly, but every terrestrial colony has attempted or been involved in seperatist activities. A self-sustaining colony will more than likely be a military base or space station. In a similar way to government funding, the massive amound of cash and resources involved would necessitate the protection of that investment with a security presence.

That's like saying people, take those who write rap music for instance, who use slang and street/urban language don't have the ability (or have a reduced ability) to communicate using proper grammar and spelling to convey their thoughts in settings where that kind of language is required.

Now if you're suggesting that people who use abbreviated or coded language that was derived from proper modern english grammar are preferring to use that language more often, perhaps it's because there are more of those kinds of people to associate with that use or read that kind of language. It's similar to how something moves from a fad to a trend to a subculture to a fully accepted part of everyday life.

OMG! A new way to communicate is upon us.
