Probably the sole reason this hasn't happened completely is there is no sports option without cable. My bet is cable companies are not encouraging stations like ESPN to make a ESPN-GO like option with monthly fees.
I have absolutely zero faith MS will keep these servers alive for more than a year and a half. I assume by this time 2018 they will be sending notice all Xbox 360 game servers will be shutting down. They'll keep them running just long enough to sell their overstock.
Update: I talked to the online chat, and asked why I couldn't find anything available in my area (Boston MA, Brookline MA) they told me i need to call Comcast to see if my address is eligible. so much for customer service.
I am DELIGHTED, that this has come to light. MY father, who works for one of the companies backing an HD format, has been telling about Microsoft's Strategy for about a year or so. Specifically: Backing an opposing format to fuel the fire of HD wars so that they both will fail in the end. Granted, MS never came out and said it, but he is fairly confident tis is their unspoken strategy.
Its one thing to push your own format, it quite another to push sabotage the entire ordeal.A pretty awful strategy for everyone but MS really, the consumer really loses out.
I would have loved to have been there when he told this story.
"Absolute bullcrap Senator, I call shenanigans".
I have yet to use a major search engine that pummels you with porn popups just for typing in a search term no matter how profane. That is unless hes already been to some porn sites and they've put some spyware/ tracking cookies to pop up when you search for something.
Either way, these people are using the prospect of the general publics ignorance of the internet to keep the net closed.
"but the audio improvement I want to see is application level sound control."
Really? what type of improvements? I thought it was fantastic that you can control the sound levels of individual applications vs just turning the master volume up and down. What were you looking for? Thats really all i could ask for regarding 'app level sound controls'
Its actually a well thought out article. I especially enjoyed the comparisons to similar features in OS X. Unlike for of the literature I read when both these operating systems are involved, the author seems to have no agenda but to inform. Its a nice change.
Nicer still I'm liking the comments here (so far). Unlike the site where i first heard about this article (Digg), people can argue without using excessive caps, exclamation points or using the word 'fanboy' over and over again.
I'm pretty distressed about the new audio stack in Vista, traditionally using onboard sound slowed the computers other functions (for games and such). It kind of sounds like theres now no difference between using a soundcard and using the onboard equivalent. Does anyone know if this is true? Moreover does this mean games will be that much slower?
Keep in mind, Vista also does something that drags your whole computer down when playing games. The audio stack is completely new. It bypasses your video card and does all those EAX calculations itself. That in itself is a pretty big drain on resources right there.
Punkoflinux you have 2 real options if you want to go all 'legal' with your copy of XP-
1 CHANGE THE KEY. depending on the version of xp, you can only replace a key with that type. Meaning a volume license key can only be used if that was the original, same for xp retail. if retail is the case just purchase a new copy and use a cd key changer to change the key.
2 REINSTALL using the MIGRATION WIZARD. if its not retail, well, you really cant legitimately purchase avlk key so you can reinstall. "The migration wizard is actually pretty cool in the sense that it will take all your 'personal' files and put them into one archive. throw that on a disk and THEN reinstall. note the problem with any system reinstall is that programs are usually orpahned, and you will have to reinstall them as well.
question: is this computer a dell?
How can you NOT like the transformers? I wasnt too excited when this project was first accounced, (another hollywood bludgeoning of an icon from my childhood) but this is promising.
I'm close to assuming this movie isnt going to be as bad as I originally thought, Lets hope Bay doesnt go all Uwe Boll on us and completely destroy the Transformers. Peter Cullen has done a lot of voice over work for movies for the last couple of years, but everytime I hear his voice I think, "ooh optimus!". Hopefully this will be seen as a coup-de-gras of his career and he can get the recognition he deserves.
As for the type of guy I was back then, jellomizer, I still own all 113 of my transformers.
An interesting point, but i would like to point out that you cannot use a virtual drive and Itunes together- meaning you cannot burn music to a virtual cd.
All things considered the virtual audio patch cable is something a lot of people have strived to create (sounds like the perfect solution to getting around DRM).
Speaking as one of the people who helped start the last bluesecurity article, I think we've all had enough time to reflect and debate on the 'fight fire with fire' technique that blusecurity has enacted. What this new DDOS attack has brought to the table is something a little different.
Before the attack, Bluesecurity would send an equal amount of opt out requests as spam. THIS DDOS attack on bluesecurity, which is clearly illegal, is the breaking point. I'm not sure WHAT going to break, (of than someones ISP) but it has shed light on spammers intentions.
Spam artists have always relied on the fact that their activities arent spefically illegal.
With this attack they have really crossed the line- This event could be the event that got some sort of anti spam- legislation rolling, (or it might have the opposite effect). Something should come out of this though, if only to be remembered the 'bluesecurity incident'.
Personally I was pretty pissed having some jackass hold my gmail account for ransom, especially since bluesec. was so ridiculously effective. FYI, despite the threats, I have recieved no greater amount of spam than when I was first threatened on monday (sunday). I dont think their database was compromised despite what joe spammer tells us.
COnsidering its beta, does this mean it doesn't cover the full spectrum of protection? I have tried it out and it seems awfully small to be offering full antivirus and firewall support.
just a thought...

I couldnt agree more, considering how grounded his opinions are most of the time, its amazing to see something like this occur.
It couldnt come at a better time, with Vista (slowly) ocming out of the gate- it would make more sense to make these changes now rather than after its released.
PErsonally i cannot stand IE, but as we all know, some things can't be done any other way. I see Pauls boycott as a good thing, and if we are lucky a positive blow for standards.

agreed, its better than nothing, i guess this game shares what is most common with others of its ilk that your experience really depends on the community built around the server that you are on.

I'd rather they took a stab at telemarketing phone calls. 50% of my calls are from spammers at this point.

You lost me....
Agreed, My assumption is that these deals online are things a current customer cant get anyways.

Ridiculous.
Can anyone actually qualify for a package? I get "We're sorry but this package isn't available in your area. Please select another package."
On pretty much every choice i make. Plugging in random area codes...
This is pretty amazing...
Seriously Apple WTF?
As a member of the beta team , I can tell you everyone was pretty damn concerned about the state of the game so close to its release.
It was obvious SOMETHING was wrong given the alpha state of the builds they were giving us.
As it is, you load, hit a button and crash, repeat. I tried to withhold my judgement until they released into open beta, but its just horrible.

I'd would like to know exactly when DRM restrictions got in your way when trying Vista. UAC (user account control) is not the same as DRM.

HEH, I love yer SIG. I too am waiting for the set courst dat of Everybody v. Everybody. Wait wasnt that a South Park Episode?
Has anyone got the patent for the on-off switch? That seems to be the only thing that they are NOT suing each other about: someone call RCA.
