However, if offered the chance to get the game for free, or in this case almost free, then sure, I'll take it. How exactly am I a pirate? 2D Boy told me to pay what I felt like paying and that's what I did.

Sora, headed up by Masahiro Sakurai, was responsible for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, not Game Arts. Game Arts was simply one of many developers who contributed to the game because the project was so massive. In fact, much of the game's music was composed by people who work for companies other than Nintendo.

    From the game's Wikipedia page:

Nintendo enlisted outside help from various developer studios, including Game Arts, who spent excessive amounts of time playing Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Calling Game Arts "the developer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl" is pretty disingenuous. But it certainly is a good way to make people think that your game probably won't suck, attaching the Smash Bros. name to it like that.

Then I see people apologizing for the controls, saying things like "How responsive would a real dragon be?", etc. My response to that is: are you looking for "realistic dragon physics" in a game, or would you like it to control well and be fun? I'll take fun over realism...especially in a freaking game about dragons. If the controls take away from the fun, who cares whether they're realistic or not?

Right now "games" just doesn't seem like a great reason to buy a PS3. You can find most PS3 games on Xbox 360, and in many cases they score higher in reviews, for various reasons (often because the Xbox 360 games look better). Of course this is going to change with the release of FFXIII, MGS4 and other exclusive games, but right now I'm not grasping the appeal of the PS3.

What are people's favourite episodes? I'm trying to introduce my wife to MST3K, but I remember they varied in quality significantly. Suggestions?

Go with the Joel episodes. There are some funny episodes from when Mike took over as host, but they're far and few between compared to the "Joel era".

Some of my personal favorites are Manos: The Hands of Fate, Pod People, Eegah, Mitchell, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Cave Dwellers. Also, the shorts Hired! parts 1&2 and Mr. B Natural are great as well.

As for my favorite MST3K line, I have too many to mention them all, but many of my faves aren't so much lines as they are horrified expressions from Joel and the bots in reaction to what's happening on the screen. For example, when Mitchell (Joe Don Baker) is getting it on in his apartment with his prostitute girlfriend, there's a shot of his nightstand next to the bed which is cluttered with various odds and ends. Joel and the bots spot one thing in particular:

Probably the best news on the Fallout 3 front is that the camera will enable you to play the game in the classic isometric view as well as in first person view.

You'd think this might be a good thing, but it's little more than Bethesda throwing old-school Fallout fans a bone. And not a particularly meaty bone, as the iso viewpoint cannot be used for combat, and I don't see it working very well when you're indoors. In other words, it's useless.

As you said, the turn-based combat is gone, and that's probably the most disappointing thing about Fallout 3, as the combat was one of the Fallout franchise's defining features. Fallout 3 is a Fallout-inspired FPS, not a true RPG worthy of the Fallout name. But console kiddies who think Oblivion is the epitome of the RPG should like it.

  13. Re:Most comfortable? on What is the Best Console Controller of All Time? · · Score: 1
I have to agree with the Gamecube controller being the most comfortable controller I've ever used. On top of being extremely comfortable, one thing I really like about it is that each button has a different shape or size, so after a short while it's easy to memorize button locations. No looking down at the controller to see what's what, something I find myself often doing with a PS/PS2 controller. It's especially annoying in button-mashing minigames like those found in God of War.

Speaking of the PS2 dualshock design, it's probably the worst controller in recent memory. I hate the location of the analog sticks, and I hate the fact that the Wii's classic controller has a similar layout. It's not comfortable in the slightest, and I can remember many times feeling my hands cramp up after extended use.

The Wii has a great, unique control scheme and all, but I can't say just yet that it's the "best" or "most comfortable". Specifically, the sword combat in Twilight Princess for the Wii was less accurate than it should have been, and it often felt like I was simply flailing the Wiimote around blindly hoping that I pulled off the correct moves. It actually had me yearning for a Gamecube controller, though aiming the bow with the Wiimote certainly is better than with traditional controls. Aiming with analog sticks really sucks compared with the accuracy of the Wiimote. However, developers have work to do getting combat to feel just right in games like Twilight Princess.

Here are two "real" reasons for you.

    1. $599 price tag. Unless you want the crippled, 20gb HDD version for $500 which isn't a whole lot easier on the wallet.

    2. Sony's smarmy, arrogant "you'll buy it just because it's a Sony" attitude. I'd purposely not buy a PS3 out of spite.

Speaking of smarmy and arrogant, when Kaz Hirai stands up there at E3 and denounces "gimmicks" as a jab at Nintendo, then proceeds to show off a new EyeToy game, the ability to use the PSP as a rear-view mirror in racing games and a dualshock controller with a gyroscope, it smacks of hypocrisy and turns off everyone but the most die-hard of Sony fanboys.

There are plenty of "real" reasons to not buy a PS3. Heck, I didn't even mention the fact that I have no use for a Blu-Ray player; therefore, why should I pay extra for one? But really, the outrageous price tag is the only reason most people need to say "Uh, no thanks" to the PS3.

Is development for the Gamecube slowing down? No question - it's slowing down for EVERY current-gen system. Does the PS2 trump the 'Cube in software library size? Yes, it does. But I don't get people who act like there are only 4 or 5 good games for the Gamecube and they're all several years old. I consider myself a pretty avid gamer, but by no means "hardcore", and I own about 40-50 titles for the system. There's probably at least 30 other GC games that I'd like to play at some point, but I'll probably never get around to it. Why? Because I can't even get through all the GC games I currently own!

No offense, but people with attitudes like yours are why many great games for the 'Cube bomb in terms of sales - Battalion Wars comes to mind - too many Gamecube owners won't touch a game that doesn't prominently feature Mario, Samus or Link. I love those series as much as the next Nintendo fanboy, but c'mon. Every example you listed is a friggin' Mario title. Try playing a game that isn't part of a Nintendo franchise sometime. There are plenty of them out there.

It's one thing if you want to argue that there aren't enough good shooters or RPGs for the Gamecube, or something like that. I'll listen to that, as long as you don't bring that tired "there are no mature games" garbage. But your post makes it sound as if you've played every single quality Gamecube title, of which there are only 4 or 5, and you have no other use for the system. If that's really the case, I feel sorry for ya, cuz you've missed out on some killer games.
