The reason they're not easy to get anymore (what I've heard, not like I tried to buy one) is that Strict Product Liability laws have screwed the deal. Strict Liability means if someone takes a Cessna for instance, and crashes. And subsequently finds out that the third tailfin bolt is 1/4" out of spec, and that had anything to do with the crash...everyone in the product line gets sued. The dealer, the manufacturer, besides the owner who'd you'd expect to be sued anyway. So, the manufacturers of the inexpensive planes decided screw this crap, and stopped making light planes.
IANAL, and IANAP (I am not a pilot), but I worked for someone who owned a small plane airport hanger/service/gas complex and that's what he told me in conversations back in '84. I'm sure there are parts of the story that are missing, and parts that have changed. But that is my current understanding of the problem.
My thoughts exactly, seeing how we're in the litigious (sp?) society that we are, God forbid something goes wrong with the repaired plane, everyone remotely associated with granting it airworthyness again will get sued.
Yeah, except if the freakin plane is falling out of the sky, I'd be willing to take my chances with the parachute. I may not make a Golden Knights worthy landing, but at least I'd have a chance.
Lightly damaged? Have you ever seen one of these tin cans up close? One person can move the plane without much effort. There's not a whole lot there, so a minimal impact will F*** things up.
Not to mention, I'm willing to bet body parts that after a "lightly damaging crash" the insurance company (and any sane pilot" would want a complete teardown and inspection before declaring it airworthy again.
I bet the price between a major crash and a complete teardown inspection/rebuild will be closer than you'd think.

You're out of work You used to make $15/hr. The economy now pays $9/hr for the same work you did.
You have a choice, sit home and earn nothing, or go to work for $9/hr.
It's not exactly the same senario as bidding for preferred hours as in the story. In that case, you are getting something out of the deal by taking less because you value whatever they are offfering in return (I beleive it was better hours, wasn't it?). Instead of working the 2AM shift, you get to work the 9AM shift. Not all that uncommon to pay a premium for working crappy hours.
It's more to show that you're worth what someone will pay you an hour, and what you're willing to work for an hour. Not what you say, or what they say. What you agree on is what you're worth right then. It's what the market will bear, and right now the market is down.
When the time comes that someone else wants to pay you more an hour than your present employer, then the minute you agree to the higher rate, you're worth more.
Trust me, I thought the same thing until I put one on. Go back after you have it on for a day and stick your hand under the blanket.
You'll see like I did. Even thought the other posters below/above me in the same reply thread point out that modern hot water heaters have insulation (mine is only 3 years old), I was amazed at the temp difference.
This is what is used to neutralize odors from fire recoverys.
We had a fire across the hall from us and if we actually owned anything worth a shit, they would have paid to have it set in an ozone room for a weekend. We had archive boxes of files put in there, and it worked fairly well, but the files still had some odor. I attribute that to the fact they were not removed and seperated to allow the ozone to reach all sides equally.
We didn't try the machines because they were soot damaged, but I'm sure it would at least cut the odor down if not eliminate it. You have to be careful though, from what I understand....too much ozone will make the plastic brittle.

Oh come on....That's an easy one.
That's when you hit the web-enabled "wireless Shotgun" and activate the "street sweeper" mode.
Next question.

Everytime someone brings up Newton and recognition, this exact scene pops into my head.
I wear boxers, so my boys get plenty of air while I walk around. The few minutes I spend with the lapwarmer is actually welcome.

I guess I can eat a gun barrel now, I have seen everything.
It also helps teach the youngsters that some mistakes are a one-time only deal.
Only the strong (and quick to move out the way) will survive.

Because I know, when I think of high-tech jobs that require a bachelors in CS, I think of call center jobs.
Mr. Karma, meet Mr. Whore.
I'd like to see the video of your babysitter after you're gone too....
I'm sure we'll see it as a mpg on the newsgroups very soon....
Or, look at it this way,

Rinse, repeat as necessary!

Actually, your followup should have been:
When was the first spam message really sent? April 1994 wasn't it? Those god damn lawyers started it.
I remember reading about an Antarctic Linux station and thought it was neet-o back then.

Please keep in mind that 87% of all statistics mentioned in conversations and comments tend to be made up on the spot.
Think about it....
"If you hear Hoofbeats, you should be thinking horse, not zebra" is something more pleople should consider.
To translate for the less astute /. reader, you should look at the more plausible explination instead of the most outlandish, exotic one.

Just built a system last fall, and you can't go wrong with a gig at these prices....now for the video card. If only they would come down to earth.
I bet I know why....
