yeah my boss shelled out like $1400 bucks for a couple copies of this. The last computer that we had come through with a fscke'd up HD, the erd wouldn't see anything on the drive. We booted up Knoppix, and were easily able to copy and rescue all data on drive. I said that was $1400 well spent.
I tried it, and got another system to partially boot off pxe. However, I could only get knoppix to recognize one ethernet card at a time, and I don't want an extra dhcp server on our network. Got any ideas on how to setup a second network card ?
I've just gotta ask:
Have they yet reinstituted the 'Redneck' Language option in the installer that they used to have in the old days? That was my favorite thing about my first Linux install, on RH 5.1.
Hmm, often predicting gloom and doom. Sounds like Saruman/wormtongues argument against Gandalf to King Theoden of Rohan. Who turned out to be the hero there ?

As a midsize business admin thinking about changing from Notes to Exchange this seems like it could be a godsend. Have these guys been keeping this a secret or what ? This is just awesome. I can't wait to try it out and demo it to my bosses;)
"I have been kinda frustrated with google since they blew away their competition a couple years back. I feel like their search quality has dropped significantly, and more competition is a good thing, IMO. Even if its from Microsoft."
That is until Microsft embraces and extends the technology, killing the competitor. Then there is no longer any competition.
Also, if the company tanks b/c of your action. What happens to all the poor secretaries and others who had no part in your action, and can't afford to be out of work. I hope your conscience can handle it, and you have a good personal protection plan.
Are they going to do anything with the Loki version of Myth 2 for Linux. I haven't been able to get it to run on my Linux boxen for a year and a half now. I never bought the windows version. So if they don't work on it, I guess I'm outta luck;(
I grew up as a tech-head,and never knew a thing about cars. Mention fan belt or battery and I was lost. I could build computers like crazy though.
Well after electronics school, I started getting jobs in Industrial maintenance. I quickly had to start getting my hands dirty, as well as working with some guys who were into cars. So I learned a little about cars from them, and lost my aversion to getting dirty. Now, as an industrial electrician, I've delved into about any mechanical problem you could think of at work. At home, I've changed a car engine out, replaced starters, wheel bearings, several other things, and practically become a brake pro. I shudder to think of how much money I've saved on really easy stuff.
To sump up, from my experience, I think anyone who as the natural intelligence to be a computer geek has the aptitude to fix mechanical things like cars, if they can get over the 'getting dirty', and overcome the initial intimidation factor of working on big mechanical heavy-duty things.
Does anyone know what they mean by support for parallel port scanning?
Will I finally be able to use my cheap parallel port umax 610 with Linux?
Or are they just spouting off and trying to suck ppl in. If they really did develop support for ALL parallel port scanners, then that sure would be something nice to give back to the COMMUNITY....
" Not all hippies had long hair and smoked pot either, but a group classification, by its very nature, has to take the stats exhibited by the majority, and, unfortunately, miss the minority. " Acknowledged. However, I think that it does a disservice to the geek population to focus on the negative aspects of geekdom. I just don't agree with the fact that being socially outcast is a lowest common denominator of the geek class. Nice sig btw , its an all time favorite quote of mine.
The 'outsider' stereotype that katz presents of geeks, is IMHO total BULL. I've always considered myself a computer geek, a Star Trek geek, a RPG geek, later a MTG geek, and general all-around techno-geek. My friends also shared my interests. However, none of us were alienated outsiders in High School. I was an athlete, a thespian, a class clown. In no way did I, or do I fit the stereotypes, and I don't believe that Katz should be perpetuating them.
" but nobody reads them anyway. " Uh, I've read them twice. Of course, I've only had moderator access twice, but that means that I've read them every time.:)
Rather than going Microsoft, maybe you should use freemind. I've been using it the last six months on Linux and Windows, and am very pleased with it.

looks like its /.'ed . Anyone know of anywhere else to find that info ?
I, for one, welcome our Beaver Overlords.
Yeah, well my kids will unfortunately not even have the chance to read the books first. :(
I like "Bob".
No... wait..... MS already used that one. Dang.

Well thanks a lot :) That really counts for something on "News for Nerds" hehe

Or Better yet, read the book "The Isle of Dr. Moreau". Much better than any of the movie versions. Thank you H.G. Wells....

so now I can build my own. a dream come true ..... :)
Have you thought of writing biographies of the more prominent persons of the Open Sourse Community, i.e. Linus, Bruce Perens...

Methinks that if Moore's Law is going to continue to be met, we need to be hearing more of this kind of big tech announcement.
