It's a nice change from the recent mandatory vaccination bullshit that just went into effect. Gov. Perry put mandatory HPV vaccinations into effect, bypassing the legislature. So now all girls 11 and 12, have to get vaccinated. The catch is that only one company is producing the vaccinations, and this company just so happened to donate a lot to Perry's recent campaign. But thats all off topic, I hope something like ODF goes through here in TX.
I run gentoo on my servers (3 of them), and yes Gentoo may be harmful if you don't know what you're doing. If you're the the kind of person who updates everyday, and stays bleeding edge, it's relatively easy to bring down your own server for a good couple of hours to a few days.
But if you have a good schedule for when you want to update your system, it's as good as any other linux distro out there. What this guy wanted was probably something like Redhat, or Debian (don't nitpick). I don't run enterprise servers, I run basic gaming/radio/website setups, the website server is updated once every 4 days, but I don't get a lot of traffic, and I can afford to have my system come down for a few hours while I figure out what is going wrong.
My gaming server is my testbed, since I update that once a day, if something goes wrong I don't mind digging into it to figure out what went wrong, this usually helps me keep the other sites from screwing up when they update, and I can troubleshoot problems on them before they happen.
Regardless of what you run, there is going to be downtime associated with your distro, and gentoo is no exception. If the guy who wrote this article had any experience with Gentoo, he'd know the hardships that come with it. I'd never reccommend someone to use Gentoo as their server operating system if they've never used it, even if they've had a few months using it, but that doesn't mean it's a bad choice for a server operating system.
I live in San Antonio, about 25 minutes from the proposed location, and I'm not sure how it makes me feel. On one hand I hate Microsoft, on the other, it will bring plenty of jobs to the area, and for sure boost our tech status. How should I feel? I wish it was google personally, but meh.
Who cares how much money Draper is making, he's still having fun along the way, doing what he always did best, and keeping the spirit alive in his own way. I met draper once, and it was like meeting a god, not because of his wallet but because of the impact he made.
Plus rumor has it, he has a prescription for medical marijuana, so that earns him a couple thousand points in my book.:)
I'm a college freshman (technically a sophomore, but thats only because I was a dual credit student in High-School), and I just so happen to work for one of the major advertisers for slashdot. I won't name the company, because I don't want to have them come off as hiring know-nothings. Maybe I'm one of the few 18 year olds who can administrate Linux servers? If anything, to me this article is nothing but flamebait, or trolling. Maybe my generation is completely flawed, but surely we know how to use a search engine? If in fact this study is accurate, I'm glad, because it only means that I'll still have a tech job in 10 years.
How much more are people going to take before they realize what is going on here? Seriously, we're only a step away from open revolution.. Will it actually take having troops parade around your hometown enforcing martial law before people stand up for their rights?? (which we don't have many anymore).
I'm not saying there should be a call-to-arms, but I AM saying that people need to wake up and see what's going on before it's too late! First Patriot Act, Patriot Act II, Military Commissions Act, and now THIS?! All in the name of "terrorism". We're just letting the government trample all over our constitution, because people don't understand why it was written in the first place, TO LIMIT GOVERNMENT!
When will people realize that FREEDOM is NOT letting your government take away all your rights...
The problem is, most people are content to live like this. Without questioning their rights (hell most people I've come across don't even know what their rights are). We live in an apathetic society, where people are happy just waking up every morning being alive and going to work without being shot at. And it only gets worse every day.
This is nice and all, but when is nvidia going to release drivers for X.org 7.1? I've been without real graphics drivers for about a month now, its getting old fast.
I don't understand why everyone hates the ps3 so much, if you dont want to spend the $600, then don't. But your petty whining about sony's supposed marketing mistakes isn't going to convince me not to shell out for something that could easily be considered a supercomputer.
Why am I dishing out all that cash? Because I want to run linux on it, I want to learn the new arch. I want to utilize its processing power. yeah yeah ps2 ran linux, but it also didnt come with it preinstalled out of the box on a harddrive. Does no one see the potential that the cell processor has? Or is everyone still pissed off about the DRM cd's and the virus problem that caused months back. Hell I run linux, it didn't effect me, so I could care less.
Ever since day 1 I've been telling everyone that I was going to buy a ps3 to use it as a pc, this only substantiates my claims.
At my highschool, its all about sports now. Not the education. The computer science class at my school stopped teaching C++ or even Java in favor of just teaching Oracle. I don't really consider database programming as an entire years study, is much computer science. When I think computer science, I think assembly programming and getting to know your architecture.
I was kicked out of my computer science class 2 years ago, for booting linux on one of the computers. It set the IT department frantic "how did he get past our windows security?", blah blah blah "you can't use a computer anymore". In the long run they got me into a computer security program at a local college so that I wouldn't take courses at the highschool. It's turned out better this way I suppose.
In my case, there aren't any programmers at my highschool, except for all the people who think HTML is programming. When people see me carrying around "The C programming Language" in one hand and "Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment" in the other, the most intelligent comment I ever get is "hey isn't that like Linux?".
There isn't any incentive for us students anymore, all of us are ranked by our grades rather than our ingenuity. An elegant written piece of code might interest someone, but a great football pass and you're suddenly the school hero.
I program because I enjoy programming, but for most students its hard to find joy in programming, and for those who do find joy we are a dying race.
Thats the whole reason I would have voted for him, hot one on one chick action legalization... :)
Does it run linux?

Probably not very feasible, but why not have a base built underground, where the temperature could be stabilized year-round?

When global warming isn't a theory anymore, it will kind of be like hell on earth. So I guess the bible is right?

Nevermind, I RTFA and from the site "Starting salaries range from $45,000 to $55,000 a year."
How much does the watchmaking business pay nowadays?
Can someone please explain to me how they would manually communicate with a spacecraft, as opposed to using a computer system? What is the difference?
I know, Why don't we just have RFID tags implanted in all of our hands. I mean, wouldn't swiping your hand under an RFID reader be so much easier ;)
It's not about voting Democrat, it's about NOT voting republican.
I said the same thing to myself.

Thank you. I love civilization 3 & 4, but I absolutely hate steam. I don't understand why I was modded as troll though..
Am I the only one who finds this disappointing?
If I want a PET scan , I'll go to the vet.

Defcon starts Friday, 3/8/6. Coincidence?
Let's see them try to enforce this, I mean look how well the RIAA is doing here and all the file sharing they've managed to stop... oh wait.
