What happens when the unscrupulous player decides to falsify the buying habit information to steam, and sends a million hits to the guns they dont play, just to drive the price of the guns they want back down?

"keep the untouched code in the main development cycle."
And who is continuing the "Main development cycle"? The E3 build takes every person in the office throwing everything they got at it, or you wont have a good showing. So what is the point of a fork? I suppose you could roll back, but some of the content from E3 builds may stay in the game.
Forgive me for not working for a huge developer who keeps crack teams on reserve for such occasions.
If he died on May 26, how is it that/. is finally getting the news? The obit dates June 13, and the reflections article dates July 11. And a quick search through slashdot history shows no other articles on the gentleman.
Alan Kotok, RIP. Better late than never, of course. And thank you for everything!
Another parallel can be drawn from this. Proof that (Speed & Power) != (Fun). Developers love programming for the DS, over the PSP. The games are simpler, and the focus is drawn more towards fun.
Perhaps the future of the console wars does not rely on power as much as everybody thinks. I wouldn't be suprised in the least to see the Wii take the #1 slot in the next gen market (Even if it is a Gamecube++).
The problem with that theory is the same that plagues the video game industry, and any other media industry which you can buy used material.
Sure, the RIAA isn't getting anything for that used copy of said CD, unfortunately neither is the artist. You are not supporting anybody but the store who sold you the used CD at that point... and they make a killing off of used CD sales.
Think about it.. A music store pays $13 for a CD, and they sell it for $15. They give you $3 for a cd you (or at least somebody) bought new for $15. They sell the used CD for $10. The profit on a Used CD is $7 where the profit on a new CD is $2.
This may not sound like a big deal to you, but if a music store cycles 10 used CD's for every 1 new CD, they make far more money than the artist.
And lets face it. If there are 2 CD's on a shelf, guaranteed to function identically. One costs $10 and the other $15, which would you purchase? Any red blodded consumer is going to buy the cheaper one.
I had always wondered if somebody would attempt to make a mud out of programming. Everytime I start stepping through my debugger, it feels like I am on an adventure.
Yeah, because nobody has ever done that before *cough* Unreal Tournament *cough*.
from TFA "Microsoft's goal is to file 3,000 patents per year."
Amazing. Do they have some sort of Patent Counter in the shape of a dollar sign sitting in a Redmond office building, slowly filling with the blood of lesser companies who are being forced to compensate Microsoft when they use what was once an innovative feature, now solely under Bills control?
At the end of the year, when they are around 2900 patents, what will they resort to in order to fulfill their goal? How does this sound, "Microsoft patents interactive software." I mean, that hasn't been done yet, right?
I would like to see an analysis of the original Sonic the Hedgehog's first stage. No matter how many times I play it, it seems exactly the same. I wonder how many variations there actually are!
The IGDA website is devoid of any mention of this new group. The International Game Developers Association already has a substantial presence in the industry.
"And the guild is "GLBT Friendly" not "GLBT ONLY.""
Ok I get it. But here is the thing. The company I work for has a sexual harassment policy. It is very clear and unambiguous. However, the company I work for does not advertise itself as a GLBT friendly company. It is just understood as one. If there is an issue, it is handled on a case by case basis. If the company I work for went to the papers to advertise for a job, and explicitly identified itself as a GLBT friendly company, how would the general public react?
This was not meant as a troll post, it is a serious position that I have. Personally, I give everybody equal respect, regardless of what their sexual preference may be. However I do not tout myself as a GLBT friendly person. I am equally tolerant.
And never did I even insinuate that the guild were some 'gay sex club'. That was a very intolerant, and closed minded assumption.
My point is, some things are better left handled in private. It's not a matter of bigotry, its a matter of tact.
Individuals fight for Gay Rights. They fight for equal opportunities. They fight to be recognised as equals. Then they form a guild to spotlight the fact that they are different than the common society.
If you don't want to stand out in a crowd, don't call attention to yourself. There should never have been a guild in WoW that was allowed to recruit based on sexual preference. It is only a target for harassment.
Otoh, I can see how Blizzard has an express interest in keeping this sort of thing from happening. After all, the more accounts they have to ban for harassment, the less residual income they make. Although with their current numbers, tossing a few bad apples from the bunch wouldn't even make a dent.
Last time I took an international flight, I had a layover in a foreign country. I did not need to cross customs, security, or anything since I was flying straight out on another international flight.
I am not sure if all airports are the same, but I would imagine so. Just because you fly through a foreign country, does not mean you have to pass through their customs.
When the technology is available to fully take advantage of the two-way bus communication on the PCI express cards, we will see the biggest jump in performace.
It is great that these cards are supporting great features such as parallax mapping however being able to offload algorithms for collision and other extremely processor intensive functions will be the biggest boon for not only games, but all kinds of graphical simulations.
Until then, the best we will get is the same quality games rendering prettier than before. Not faster.
Our Final Project group did the exact same sort of thing. 5 months, complete game, yadda yadda.
Not a lot of people can appreciate how much work goes into creating a game. I just wish that we had national recognition for our final projects.. with prizes and guest appearances.
Our game, Balls to the Wall is a damn fine game.. and we did it with 4 people in 5 months, and by creating all of our assets and tech, as well as 250 pages of design / tech docs.
My hats off to the Stanford students.
from (TFA): "To my knowledge, no one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great dramatists, poets, filmmakers, novelists and composers."
First and foremost, it requires quite an investment to enjoy a video game to its full potential, unlike a play, or a movie, or a book, which can range from a $10 price tag and a couple hours of your time, to $30-40 and a couple days. An epic video game with a great storyline can take days, or months of a casual gamers time to complete, not to mention the initial investment of $50-60 for the title, not including the console / computer.
Second, the video game industry is still in its infancy as compared to the other mediums suggested. How long did movies exist before a truly epic film debut? And what about books? Sure Shakespeare wrote some of the most memorable works, but the egyptians were carving on walls well before he came along.

Right, but UnrealTV was a mod, not included in the original game. I believe it came out around 2001 as well.

Anybody remember from chem what happens when you place two dissimilar metals against each other?
Agreed. Even if they threw some of their residual income back into the pot, and sprung for a port team, what sense would that make?
WoW is a powerhouse. Nothing short of time will stop it.

If it were the Canadian Government, it could have been simplified greatly, and nobody would need any extra computers.
1. How much money did you make last year? ________
2. Send the result from line 1. to the Canada Revenue Agency.

How is Stewie going to host a talk show? Nobody can understand him except other youngsters, and Brian. Are we going to have an interpreter?

It will take time, but hope is not lost Mr Ebert.
Somebody quick, what is the stock symbol for Mt Dew?
