  1. Playstation vs N64 on FFXIII Exclusivity Under Discussion · · Score: 1

I remember the SNES days. After hearing that Nintendo is developing the "Dolphin", I quickly anticipated the next Final Fantasy on it. It even had a tech demo of 3d FFVI characters. Then, when I heard that the PS1 was getting FFVII, I was shocked. It was so shocking that I had to save up money for two systems instead of one. By the way, I bought more PS1 games than N64 mainly due to the RPG selection. The only N64 games I had are the 1st party games and Golden Eye (btw, kicked ass back in the day).

Well, if you are some Tech guy that needs to make a decision about which OS to use for your company, please for the love of God review everything before submitting your proposal. I would hate for you to have a vulnerable server ready to be exploited.

I don't remember the exact quote on the movies Rounders but it goes something similar to this: "You can't earn what you can't put out on the table."

For Sony's case, they're risking everything to double, triple, 8x their income or bust.

  8. It's the fans on How Strategy Guides Affected Gaming · · Score: 1

Strategy guides didn't pave the way for more difficult games. It was the fans. With fans often bragging beating games in 1 or 2 days (or even hours), the developers make mental notes that the game isn't challenging enough or the developers are secretly collaborating with Brady and other strategy publishers for profits. Assuming the former is true, developers would add more levels or make the game world larger which requires $$$ and man hours. Or, they could simply add tedious puzzles which take less man hours and $$$ and force the users (the fans) to spend hours solving it.

Here's my personal experiences growing up. Battletoads was probably the only game my 2 brothers and I couldn't finish while renting it. From what I recall, every game we rented was conquered. 40+ hour rpgs like Chrono Trigger, FF6, UW: New Horizons (rented 4x to beat all 6 chars), and OGRE BATTLE 5 was conquered within the 3 day timeframe. Usually we took 2 days. It required rotation of brothers playing the games and/or doing the chores like dishes and lawn. Of course, I could have done it myself but with 2 brothers, 1 NES/SNES, we had to fight for time.

One nuisance with puzzles was with Lufia for the SNES. There was a puzzle where you had to press 4 buttons in a certain order and if you messed up, you had to fight a random encounter. Then, you had to leave the room and re-enter to reset the puzzle. With no hints, that puzzle took almost an hour using trial-and-error. It was back in the day, so either we were too poor to buy a strategy guide or the internet wasn't as big as it is now (gamefaqs would save the headache). This 1 memory alone made me believe in the strategy guide conspiracy.

  13. Re:Yes on Do MMORPG's Cause People to Buy Fewer Games at Retail? · · Score: 1

A WoW addict pays a fixed subscription rate (I dunno, say $20). A hardcore gamer who buys 4 game a month pays ~$160 (assuming he/she beats 1 game a week and game price is $40 each). Now, compare $20 to $160.

When we say the games industry, what do we really mean? Blizzard is a company that is part of the games industry. It is benefitting from black marks in the payroll every single month (in the millions?). So, yes it is benefiting the games industry. But if it was $160, it would probably be $40 to four different companies. In a sense, it is benefiting 4 different companies. What I'm trying to say is that it all comes down to perspective.

But in my biased perspective, I'd say that MMORPGs are hurting the industry because it can possibly lead to less variety of games because the players will be fixed to 1 game (1 company) and the other companies lose out and may close out.

  14. Wii and PS3 on Comparing the PS3 and 360 · · Score: 1

Wii is 100% for sure. If SSBB came out on launch day, I'll get it on launch day no questions asked. Since it is not, I am 75% likely to get it due to Zelda:TP, Wario Ware (very fun games for the gf and her sibs) and other blockbuster franchises.

As for the PS3, it's mainly to feed my JRPG cravings. If the PS3 bombs and rpg developers move to Wii, then that'll be 1 less system to buy. If the rpg developers move to the 360 (shudders), I'll be forced to buy a 360. I'm hoping MistWalker pulls a Capcom (RE4) and release Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for the PS3 (or the Wii).

So in summary, the Wii for the franchises and PS3 for the JRPGs.

China has a big problem concerning piracy. If tourists and locals are buying $1 "real" dvd without hesitation, what makes them think they'll report it to the police. So, I doubt the DS Lite is going to have any problems being sold. China, Malayasia, and I think Thailand have huge problems with this issue. Last time in China, one could buy the entire Snoopy collection of cartoons for a thrifty price. How about 10 dvds of Stephen Chow movies with about 4-8 movies per dvd? Very cheap indeed.

  17. Re:So... on PS3 Apparently A Computer · · Score: 1

There's the possibility that instead of a PS4 (if that happens), SONY will release an upgrade kit containing various hardware components to create the PS4. This way, consumers won't need to buy a brand new console and instead buy the upgrade kit to get the next-gen console.

This may be a way to curb costs on future generations. Of course, there will be a regular PS4 for sale for those who never bought a PS3.

NOTE: This is not confirmed. This is only 1 idea I think they are approaching it this way.

  18. M$ vs Nintendo on 500 Million Halo Games, Halo 3 Documentary · · Score: 2, Insightful

Please note that Nintendo makes quantity "Quality" games so this isn't really a fair comparison. If it was Random Port or Sequel VS Halo 2 then it would clearly be Halo 2 being the winner of quantity vs quality.

Let's say the ps3 is built to last. Then, when the next gen consoles come out, we wouldn't have to spend money on the ps4 but on the games instead. So, in Sony's point of view, they are making money where it counts - license fees of games. I'm all for the ps3 built like a computer. Only when it is absolutely necessary to upgrade (eg. Final Fantasy 20 needs a quad core) will I upgrade the ps3.

On a side note about game pricing: Won't some games still be in DVD9 format for the ps3? Like budget-esque games such as Katamari or not so graphically oriented like Lumines?

There's a reason the codename is revolution: they are planning a coup de tat of the console emperor -- Sony.

Taken from dictionary dot com, these two definitions seems appropriate:
    1. A sudden or momentous change in a situation.
    2. The overthrow of one government and its replacement with another.

Obviously, Nintendo changed the marketing situation of the console wars. All eyes are upon Nintendo and E3 for the "Wii". After E3, the throne will be usurped by Nintendo and Sony will either be beheaded (die in the console war) or sent to peasant land (2nd place) or exiled (last place).

Of course, any rebels that fail to achieve their goals usually result in death.
