  11. Hunters vs Farmers on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Thom Hartmann ("ADD: A Different Perception.") doesn't believe that the ADD condition is a disability.

He believes there are two kinds of people, Hunters and Farmers. Hunters have to scan the horizon, taking in all the inputs in order to find game. Farmers plod ahead, focused on plowing their current row.

    http://www.thomhartmann.com/hunterfarmer.shtml

He found a high incidence of ADD in some natives in Canada (Inuit?), a tribe that gets most of their food by hunting.

The problem with today's education system, is that we're trying to force Hunters to be Farmers. Ritalin, an amphetamine, calms Hunters down.

But there are many successful Hunters that don't need to conform to the Farmer world. So, the Hunter should find a career that utilizes his traits (as noted in the above URL), and he will be successful and happy.

My son was constantly getting kicked out of daycares for being too aggressive, and when his kindergarden teacher was totally exasperated because he would never sit down, we had him diagnosed. Giving him drugs was the last thing we wanted to do, but the alternative was major damage to his self-esteem because he couldn't control himself and felt like a failure. Too much Ritalin will make a kid into a zombie, I didn't like that. But just the right amount allowed him to control himself and he was much happier.

Now that he's in high school, he quit taking those drugs. Earlier he had switched to Adderol, but it affected his heart. Now he's trying to deal with being a Hunter. It's very challenging, he's smart and scores high but gets very low grades because homework doesn't get done.

I know he'll be successful in whatever he decides to do. I don't consider grades to be an indicator of his future success.

There are many statistics about how motorcyclists have been faulted as the cause of collisions, but I'd be willilng to bet that most of those have been indirectly (or directly) caused by the car, or other surrounding motorists (I'm not including those plastic, 20lb "sport" bikes, because the guys who drive those seem to have a death wish).

You would win that bet. The Hurt Study showed that about 66% of accidents were the fault of the automobile driver! Mostly in turning left in front of a motorcyclist. The most common excuse was that they didn't see the motorcyclist. This is why a lot of bikers run with their headlights on high beam, and some run louder pipes, so that they get noticed. (Hi visibility clothing and a brightly colored motorcycle helps; it also helps if you look like a cop!)

The "Death Wish" sport bike riders rarely have collisions with cars, their accidents usually involve them running off the road.

In many states that have extremely high traffic congestion, it is actually safer for a motorcyclist to share a lane and go between cars. For example, in California the CHP was against any laws making it illegal; in stop and go traffic a motorcyclist is more likely to be hit from behind from an inattentive driver. Lane-sharing can be done safely (say no more than 20mph speed differential from surrounding vehicles, and watch for openings in traffic where a car may try to change lanes.)

in general, you want to have about double the amount of swap space as you do ram. i believe one of the main reasons for this is when you get a major crash, the kernel cant dump the memory to disk, only to swap space, so you need the swap space big enough to hold the contents of your ram plus a bit more.

I can't see how most users would care, this sounds useful only for debugging the kernel. If my kernel is crashing, I don't care if I run out of swap.

This is an old FAQ and OS legend. In linux, you only need enough swap to cover what your RAM can't handle. Even with pigs like Mozilla and Xemacs running, I barely dent my swap. (512MB RAM, only using 13MB of swap.) Since access to swap is much slower than RAM, it is best to get more RAM than you need. A few hundred MB of swap will then be sufficient.
