You are right about the profit. The theater employees claim that the extra $2 is for the cheap plastic glasses. When I brought my glasses with me and asked for regular price I was laughed at!? I came back from NAB in 2008 with a bag full of those shitty realD 3D glasses...scoff
I've said it time and time again--Apps are not a major decision factor for me when purchasing a smartphone ; they're great but I'm looking for something that at the core does email, messaging, contacts, calendars and calling really, really, well. This palm pre in my hand is truly a revolutionary device...The iphone cannot touch it. It doesn't matter that I'm coming from a 1st gen iphone, the OS and user interface are pretty much the same up through the 3gs...Finally I'm not fighting my phone.
Another post from me over at precentral: My Last post was when I first purchased the Pre back in December of 09. I'm not going to rehash what's already out there...just point out things that surprised me coming from the iPhone.
THE GOOD: WEB OS is the mobile platform of the future, here NOW. Notifications are handled unobtrusively and elegantly: Receive an email? Miss a Call? New track playing (music app, even Pandora!!!). Get a new mention on twitter (tweed does not req. that app be open to receive notifications). A slick news ticker style bar keeps these constant streams of information organized and always at my finger tips. This is much more efficient than the pop up/ badge notification system on my iphone.
USB drive mode. This means freedom from that headache of a program iTunes. +1 palm, +1
The Physical Keyboard is awesome. It's great to be able to A - keep all of my screen real estate while entering in text fields and B- have the ability to search for just about anything from contacts to google from any screen.
The Back Panel Mirror is a slick touch...and much appreciated for the times I need to do a quick once over.
The convenience of always having the system menu at the top. I can instantly toggle wifi, bluetooth, led flashlight (nifty patch, hehe), and airplane mode no matter what application is in use.. On my iPhone to toggle anything I had to close my app...open the pref. app, toggle, then close that pref. app and re-open the previous app. Needless to say a huge waste of time!
TOUCHSTONE: Love how easy it is to charge and the auto speaker/ auto answer features that are enabled when mounted to the base.
I think in the long haul, WEB OS will come out as a top performer with widespread adoption.
Also didn't we (the state of California) just have a huge budget deficit? I'm all for new trains but maybe we should attend to what's already on our plate.....consistently their are some great deals on regional flights between our states major airports....idk
They at least got the token black guy (TM) in the party. Coming from experience, this guy is waiting to deflect the first rap question sent his way. --
What? "buy online" When did this happen and why wasn't I notified? I'm not sure if I feel comfortable buying my electronics from a company located in the Amazon...shipping rates anyone? Newegg? Really?
For those of us who are in the industry piracy is a huge thing. The few dollars we do make off a movie get stripped from us with each act of piracy. That being said, we need to embrace the internet not fight it.
That's interesting because I convinced a friend of mine to purchase a mac. Before her Macintosh she had a Dell loaded with windows XP. She use to call me all the time for assistance on how to do the simplest things. After purchasing the mac she put togetherher own DVD in 3 hours without calling me at all. This was a person that had a hard time finding the My photos folder in Windows XP. I just bought a mac and must say that I have gained so much more time back because the operating system is so logical. The time I gained in productivity alone was worth the high price tag.
What about Mac os X spotlight? Google also has a desktop search for the Mac but they aren't asking for Spotlight to be remove or disabled. Please correct me if I am wrong about Spotlight....I just got this mac.
Lets not forget about Google Maps. This is a great feature for any business man on the road or the one wanting to find that restaurant they heard about on the flight to the convention.
I don't' know if I'd Say Apple is beating a giant...they are a pretty big gian with or without Microsoft in the picture. They also have mean lawyers..... **looks over shoulder*
I think PBS http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/planecrash/safer.htmlNova puts it best....(modified for slashdot)
"Who do you want to make the ultimate decision, a very well-trained [FBI agent] or maybe a computer programmer who's sitting home having a beer?"
I understand you %100. I am a student photographer and people always seem to get freaked out when I am taking pictures of roads, architecture, etc. It is really frustrating because I know there is nothing wrong with it but at the same time I don't want to be put on some list.
The College I will attend next year requires that I have a laptop. I am definetly choosing apple, but have the thermal paste and heating issues been addressed? Should I just get a Macbook and hold off on the 15inch Macbook pro? Just pm me
My county just recieved brand new electronice voting machines from Deibold. Our county required that these machines leave a paper tail. Having seen one demonstrated to me about 3 weeks ago I can confirm that they do have machines with a small printer of some sort attatched to the right side of the machine.
For months now I have read articles on slahdot about Diebold machines and then it happened, I saw one in real life. Imagine reading about all the failures of a machine that will probably become the future of voting in America. The machine was at my school because my county needs young people to run the machines because the old eletion judges are to slow to train. I figured I would sign up to help out on November 7th and train on the Diebold machines. On the next slahdot article after november 7th I'll try to post my experiences.
With McDonalds now offering Red Box location in my area I never rent from Blockbuster or Holywood video. Why would I do that you ask? I rent form redbox because I pay for how many days I rent it. Mostly $1.00 because i dont need it for 5 days. Also I have the convienince(spelling I know) of returning it to any location, not where I rented it from.
I would disagree...I am in your category of young people and I can tell you that the theater is the last place you will see me and my friends. Also to the general public a home theater is 5.1 surround sound. In my case 5.1 and a mitsubishi projector. With some paint and creativity my basement is how I want my movie experience to be. With the price of DLP projecters lowering it's easily becoming more affordable to buy one of these than say a rear projection t.v. which until recently had on of the worst vewing angle of any t.v.'s I had viewed.
With the sale of home theaters on the rise I think that can also attribute to some of the loss. Many people I know who buy a home theater say they now have no reason to go the theater. I just got mine and I always ask why go out?
Apple is a normal company. Why does the public constantly expect them to do the impossible?
I think over history, Apple has shown with some regularity that they can pull "the impossible" out of their hat. Now with Jobs and NeXT genes on board, that sense is even more intense.
Whether Apple's products are brilliant successes or bizarrely interesting failures, nobody can deny that what they're doing as a rule seems more interesting that what Dell/Gateway/Microsoft et al are ever doing. And occasionally (Macintosh, NeXT, Newton, iMac) Apple/NeXT have done things that were completely mind-blowing and heretofore impossible.
I'm speaking as a longtime PC owner and Linux, not a Mac owner (though I do love my Newton)-- I have a healthy respect for the real innovation Apple has brought to the industry (compare to Microsoft's "innovation"...) and I have trouble understanding why Slashot users are such haters when it comes to Apple and Steve Jobs.

Also, what about for football evens? I can't imagine how football games would be without the opening shot of the stadium from the Budwiser Blimp.

from the article: "He believes it could take years of laboratory and animal testing before the robot is ready for clinical use."
Anyone notice how the PC guy kind of resembles Bill Gates?

Why would they care? Google has a very small user base, I doubt anyone saw it...
