As I see the situation: those are are technically minded and wanted to taste something different have experimented with Linuzzz at this time and are able to download and install the thing/almost) without help, so they are not the target of this new item.
Those who are not so technically minded and buy the thing candidly thinking that they will come home and install World of Warcraft or Photoshop and use iTunes will be having a hard time with this...
So really, why don't pay, say 10 USD more to get Windows and THEN if you like to be cool, get the Linuzz pain and install it?
I must say that I'm really skeptic about this whole thing.... but who knows... After all we all know that THIS is the year of Linuzzz on the desktop.
Correct me if I am wrong, but a blood replacement is being used since the 80s. If I recall it correctly it was also some kind of artificial plasma. Jehova's witnesses (a group known by their non acceptance of blood transfusions) have beeing accepting this blood replacement for years now.
I'll never understand why is so important that an OS will be pre-installed with the machine. I'm NEVER satisfied with the way the OS is installed in any machine I buy, so the first thing I ever do is to re-format the drives in any new computer and reinstall it my own way.
Any Linuzzz distro can be obtained for free, so just, download the packages you need and... done.
I really hate when people refer to Active-X as "viral" or something similar... Active-X is a technology like any other, which unfortunatly has been abused and misused in any kind of way.
OTOH Java is really known to be a very "heavy" and slow technology... Leave politics aside, Open Source or not Open Source, let the best player win. I hope is not Java anyway.
I for once am sick of this new wave of neo-moralism which is invading the USA, but sadly also Europe. It has gone so long now that there have been students in trouble (and expelled from an university), here in Sweden for just ben caught drinking a beer when they are 17. Can you imagine? A beer can compromise the future of a person... Long gone are the merry days of the hippy culture when things were so uncomplicated...
But I must be thankful that the new wave of religious moralism has not (yet) arrived here from America... But sadly, I expect it to arrive very soon...
As with any other important figure out there, people tend to make stories, than with time, becomes legends. Everyone that has meet him has a "story", that brings us a little picece of his(her= point of view about the person in view (Gates, in this case). And we, the readers think that we know a lot about him because of those (often very subjective stories). And he is not dead yet. 10 years after his dead there will be legends told about how the guy spoke to you while smoking a USD 100 bill, or something similar...
And those rules... how are they different for other things in life? You don't copy images in a blog, but don't do it for other things either... Don't claim that you are objective if being paid in a blog. Don't do it in your site or your book either... These are normal ethical rules for life that we shouldn't even NEED to explain to anyone.
So why, if the story is about Apple is the article mentioning MS? Why if some other story is about Linuzz or whatever is necesary to mention MS? Why that fixation? Yes, it's easy to use MS as the source of everything evil just to move the focus, but anyway... A cheap trick.
is one of the nicest things that came out of Redmond. Ever. My only complain is that it is tight integrated to.NET, but OTOH I believe this is necesary to integrate the always nice C# to it, which is of course a plus.... You can't have the cake and eat it...
Well, MS never hyped.NET as a truly platform independent envioroment. They hyped it as a language independent platform which *eventually* would run in several OS.
OTPH why should they be scared of the UN*X world? If they should be scared, then it's the MAC world they should be scared of in the desktop world? AND if they were so scared of Linux, they COULD have reacted directly to the mono project. They have all the rights to stop it and guess what... They never did it.
Insightful? It seems like it's enough to say some prety standard phrase nowdays in slashdot like
* I'll never touch Vista
* Wow, Vista is selling 4 copies
* OSX is teh rulez
* Ubuntu will take the desktop this year
to be moderted insightful these days in Slashdot. Long gone are the days when you neede to ELABORATE your post to get this insightful honour...
Anyway, as a paypal user (has been one by 6 years now) I had my problems. Their support is pretty attocious and there are a couple of issues (most of them of burocratic nature), but in their defense I can say: when it works, it works like a charm. I receive donations for some of my freeware (not Open Source, thnk you very much), and in 6 years I have gotten a couple of thousands bucks. Every transaction have been trouble free. My only issue has been with the support... I change my password often and once i forgot it... It too a couple of standard canned replays from them, faxing my driver's license and some other innecesary calls to get it reseted. This has goten better as well... Of course mentioning Paypal and sucks gets you a guaranteed Insightful on this site.
I don't really think that those goldfarmers make a lot of real gold. maybe in China they get some decent money but by western measures, no way José... I am getting spammed a lot while playing WoW these days. Spammers just whisper to everybody the name of a (chinese) site where you can buy 100 WoW gold for about 3 euros.... I have A LOT of WoW contacts and of course nobody use their services. (or nobody that I know anyway).
the majority of the people realizes that is cool to get the money and items by playing and not by paying... OTOH if this busines exists is because there is a demand for it, but that I will never understand.
Well, the average slashdotter will scream when they read this because it goes agaist the inamovible myth that "you cannot go wrong with Linuzzz", but the reality out there is another: every OS has it's good and bad sides and leaving OS religion aside, will always result in migration in both directions. Many things depend also on personal preferences, ie, what people which work with the system will fell confortable with. I hope more and more people will leave the OS extremal religion out of the picture and will use whatever tool they feel confortable with, be it Linuzz, Windows, Open Ofice, MS Office, BeOS, CrapOS or whatever.
Here we go again... Pepsi vs Coke.... Oranges vs Apples (no punch), Can we stop the madness? No system is perfect, Vista has a copuple of excellent things and a couple of horrible ones. OSX has some good things and a couple of atrocious ones. The main thing in both systems is good enough and is a matter of taste. Vanilla or chocolate?
A modern operating system is so complex that the bad guys will always find a way to break it. Especially Windows, being the most popular and widly used out there is constantly examined under a magnifying glass. Every single part of the system is tested and studied to try to find out an exploit.
Some years ago, hackers were just challenging the system, and it was a cool thing to find an exploit, but today, big money is involved here and there are large criminal associations working on this.
So if the cursor is fixed, tomorrow it could be the wallpaper or the system sound...
Repeating a lie a thousand times will not make it true. Vista may be selling slow, but not slowly than Ubuntu users are upgrading to the last Fety thingy (and THAT is free!!!!) , or not slowly than Borland^H^H^H^H^H^HCodegear users are upgrading to Delphi 2007.... Eventually it will become more and more common, but don't hold your breath. It won't go away.
I HATE when people and even pseudoscientific articles talk about a medicine against "cancer". Hell, there is NO cancer. There are CANCERS. Lung cancer has a completly different nature than, say, bllod cancer, ot colon cancer, or skin cancer. Yes, all of them are chaotic grow of the cells, but their nature, symptoms, erradication and even cell behaviour is completly different. It's therefore naive to talk about a "cure for cancer". It's like saying: a drug against virus has been found. Hell! WHAT virus? They are all different!
Even more people have problems with the S in MS.
Great example.Both of them are produced by hardhare problems. The same problem in Linuzz would cause a Kernel panic. Not, not blue, but BLACK..
Those who are not so technically minded and buy the thing candidly thinking that they will come home and install World of Warcraft or Photoshop and use iTunes will be having a hard time with this...

Is this like MS Shadow Copies or like Apple's Time Machine? Not trolling but just somebody enlight me, what is new here?

Thos are classic cheese characers. How did they fail to include them?
I remember the time when software was just software and no politics...
