More fun with Linux
My boss got a kick out of this one. What was more fun though was running this one in stand alone flash in full screen on Linux after my boss asked to borrow my laptop a few years ago. He actually thought that my copy of windows had been hacked. Funny as hell when I had to come over and get him out of it and explain that he was not in a windows environment. He has not borrowed my laptop since but always asks for me for all his personal IT setup.

Re:About time
Blasphemy. If Flash was truly worse than SystemD, it would have subsumed the entirety of WIndows into FlashOS by now.

Re: Meanwhile demanding more Flash usage...
If anyone wants to take a nostalgic trip to the days of Flash animation while they still can, here's a site that has a bunch of them: http://www.albinoblacksheep.co...

Vector animation
Flash has historically been used for vector-based multimedia. If, say, Strong Bad emails or French Erotic Film were converted to MP4 or WebM, they'd be ten times bigger (source: my tests) and thus count ten times more against your ISP's monthly cap. Sure, Adobe's newer tools can export
.fla to HTML5, but those tools are available only for rental, and anything needing the .fla works only if the original author is still contactable. -

SWF can be more compact than MP4
No one cares *how* the content they made is played back
Flash was initially popular because it could squeeze a vector animation into something that could be downloaded over dial-up Internet access in a reasonable amount of time, unlike DCT-based video codecs such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Sorenson Spark (H.263), and DivX (MPEG-4 Part 2). And nowadays, a lot of people are behind an Internet connection whose monthly cap isn't much better than dial-up for sustained transfers. Point your bandwidth measuring tool at French Erotic Film (SWF) and then at French Erotic Film (video) and see which pushes more bytes.
-
Re:Flash
So what's better than the Flash platform for creating and exhibiting things like Lesko's Revenge? Just rendering to video takes 10 times the bandwidth, which means viewers hit their caps 10 times faster.
-
Vector animations
If the content owner only publishes content in a SWF, it is not worth my bother to look at it.
Animutations and other vector animations are usually much smaller in their original SWF than they are when transcoded to MPEG-4 or WebM video. In this era of monthly caps, rendering to pixels can't always compete with the bandwidth efficiency of vectors. You're not going to get, say, "We Drink Ritalin" by Robinson Wilburn (parody fan video for the song "Hot Limit" by John Desire, which incidentally introduced me to DDR) as small in MP4 as it is in SWF, probably not even with H.266 when it does exist.
Okay, I can't view video clips in Facebook, but if it is an embedded youtube video, usually I can view it just fine by going to youtube's website.
If the video has ads or claims, you'll likely get "Please install Adobe Flash Player to watch this video" with a desktop UA or "The content owner has not made this video available on mobile" with a mobile UA.

Re:Mushroom mushroom
If HTML5 is so much better than Flash, then why haven't things like Badgers or French Erotic Film been ported yet?
Because the authors of those are lazy pieces of shit.
-
Mushroom mushroom
things like Quake II and Unreal Engine 3 have been ported to WebGL/Canvas/HTML5 and the most complex thing Flash can do is move around some basic 2D shapes
If HTML5 is so much better than Flash, then why haven't things like Badgers or French Erotic Film been ported yet?

But... Robots Are Our Friends
Albino Blacksheep video says it all.

Re:Nielsen ratings Pirate Bay ratings
Nielsen is a sampling from the United States so using BT doesn't meet their criteria since it is global.
That in itself shows that Nielsen should fizzle out.

HTML site that lists Flash animations
Other than that site I haven't needed Flash for years. Any website that had no html home page lost my interest immediately.
So what do you do when you encounter a site with an HTML home page that contains a list of Flash animations (not wrappers around flv/mp4 videos, but actual vector animations)? Albino Blacksheep and Newgrounds are examples.

How would animutations be made in HTML5?
Flash is just not where the cool kids are. HTML5 has almost entirely taken over all the basic requirements of making a dazzling website that dances about on your screen.
So where's HTML5 CS that can be used to make self-contained animations and games like what you see on Newgrounds? Let me know when something like French Erotic Film (safe for work, despite the name) is ported to HTML5 without bloating it by a factor of ten by rendering it to video

At least, I think that's the video you are looking for.

Re:The Chinese...
I write this knowing full well that it will probably get modded down to -1 but this is exactly the sort of attitude that we (foreigners) see from US citizens which makes us look down on your country.
You (vocal, arrogant and naive representatives of the USA) post inflammatory things (like the above) acting like you are the worlds police (Team America... F*ck YEAH!) without even realising that Chinas intellectual property laws are quite different from the USA's and they are not beholden to your laws.
In reality it is only the AMERICAN company (in this case Samsung USA) who imports the product who is responsible for making sure the product complies with the local laws of the USA.Regardless it would be quite interesting to see what happens if the USA ever did declare war on China... a little flash video from Albinoblacksheep springs to mind:- http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/end

Re:What instead of Flash?
If you *MERELY WANT TO PLAY AN SWF AUDIO/VIDEO STREAM*, you can use mplayer or XBMC, etc, etc to render the stream.
I don't understand. By "video" are you referring only to formats like H.264 wrapped in Flash, or are you also including vector animation transmitted as vectors? For example, do mplayer and XBMC successfully play Hyakugojyuuichi Forever?

Re:What instead of Flash?
Any idea how well h264 can compress animation.
I failed to parse this sentence.
Check it out onetime. It can be tiny and still look very good.
What bitrate would you recommend for something like We Drink Ritalin or French Erotic Film?

It seems to me that if your only management tool is badgering, your core problem does not lie with your development team.
Yes, exactly; you need some mushrooms, and the occasional snake, as well.

I have to admit, this flash short had to be created by someone who was significantly warped.

Re:Come on....
I think you're forgetting about Harper Lee's timeless classic "How to Kill a Mockingbird". I think that pretty much says all that needs, nay, can be said in the pirates vs ninjas genre.
But you still have monkey vs robot vs pirate vs ninja (vs alien vs predator vs terminator (wait, robot...)) which is wide open. -
So...

Re:Can't make me; Don't want to
OMFG, I had forgotten about "How to Kill a Mockingbird", that was fucking awsome!
