I know it takes millions of dollars to run the science behind Hubble, or any other space project. Apparently, it takes a whole team of rocket scientists just to keep the thing from crashing into Tucson or something.

But why can't NASA just give the telescope to Wingo's company and be done with it? Just give them the keys and be done with it. Sign something requiring that they drop it in the Pacific (or in the Sun, or something) when they're done.

If Orbital Recovery can make a go selling science time to astronomers, then let them try it. Or they can sell time to people looking for the Face on Mars. Or they can fly up the next Survivor crew with some duct tape and an oxygen tank to play "voted off the Hubble". Whatever the free market wants.

I'm not usually one to say the "free market" is better at making decisions, but NASA has gotten its investment back. Instead of plowing it into the seabed, give it away -- think of it as the new-frontier version of salvage rights.

Science wasn't the only source to report about these Hawaiian squids. When I commented about this on my blog three days ago, I was mentioning other articles from Scientific American or Ananova. In particular, Scientific American said that this small squid has "a built-in flashlight made up of a previously unknown type of protein," that the authors of the study *dubbed* "reflectin". I'm not sure if this will lead to future nanolight tools, but at least it's *very intriguing* and Ananova reports that "the structure of the reflecting plates could offer inspiration to nanotechnology designers." Frankly, I find the lines between the two becoming a bit blurry, hence my "just" linking.

Were you aware that the US is placing customs officials in European ports? Requiring all airlines flying to the US to submit passenger data within x minutes of taking off? Is mandating (at least on Qantas flights to .au) that you're not allowed to stand in line in front of airline toilets? Is attempting to prosecute foreign nationals for breaking (insipid) US laws by proxy? Is sending foreign travellers suspected (incorrectly) of terrorist affiliations to be tortured by third world secret police?

Seemingly unrelated, right?

I'm an American citizen living abroad, who is proud of the values that my country stands for, at least in theory. I want to be able to stand up and use "us" as a shining example to others--I actually believe all that "poor, huddled unwashed bell-bottom-clad masses crap", and bits about freedom of speech and assembly and religion and and and.

It just pains me right now to see the US setting such a shitty example to the rest of the world, both by childish, idiotic policies at home, and ham-handed attempts to bring a lot of aspects of international politics in line with the government's way of thinking; it sets a bad precedent, and doesn't present my country in the enlightened manner in which I think it could.

Take my word for it (or don't), this is going to be huge! The early marketing (completely different from any other way of merketing you've ever seen) suggests they've put a lot of thought into this. As soon as the marketing itself becomes a story (look out for CNN, Time and others to cover "The making of the marketing campaign"), they've got even more free airtime. People will trailer that fooled them to believe it was a real add, and by the time the movie arrives everyone's going to go and see it.

It's the cleverest marketing ploy since people/companies started using eBay to generate free publicity for themselves.

Actually, having a positive outlook has no tangible medical benefit. I'd also be interested to know what statistics you are referring to; is there enough evidence to show causality (religin makes people happier v happy people tend to be drawn to religion)? Apparently, religious people are more likley to be obsessive compulsive than non-religious people (see this article for a random report of this study), although the causality is indeterminate.

As for the narnia books, I enjoyed them very much when I was young, but the Christian allegory was entirely lost on me, until perhaps the last battle (much the worst of the books, as I thought even at the time), where Aslan says something like "In your world, I go by a diffrent name", and I suspect this reading of the books - as straight fantasy - is rather common. After all, children seem to have an inherent (or at least quickly endowed) sense of right and wrong, and one may interpret the events from that standpoint without taking the religious interpretation that Lewis was trying to push. In fact, knowing that the books were written with the idea of indoctrinating children into the Christian faith has rather spoilt them for me; I can no longer view them as a simple and exciting set of stories written by someone who understood children, like one can with Roald dahl, say, but as a more cynical affair designed to exploit their thirst for stories. Fortunatley, I don't think that really works, except perhaps where the children already have been introduced to the religious stories themselves. However these films might be good so long as they tell the story rather than trying to tell the religion.

You laugh, but check this out. Drug cartels in Pakistan are using carrier pigeons to route messages. The logic is obvious: any landline medium is expensive and can be traced. And any RF technology can be intercepted by American spy satellites.

If a signal (ie pigeon) is caught, the signal isn't received by the intended receipient. You can also send signals without the sender knowing the physical location of the other party-- useful for security.

Actually, now what I think of it, that is the area that bin Laden is believed to be hiding out in. If I were him, I'd be using carrier pigeons and dead-drops to communicate with my followers. I'm not sure if we're even looking for them, but even if we were, finding a species of bird in those mountains? Separating it from the non-pigeon birds?
