with every power, sign, and false wonder
There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among the nations, bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves. Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Re:Legalized post-birth abortion?
I thought that a large fraction of "conservatives" strongly favor post-birth abortion.
They call it capital "punishment".
Which probably does not "work" (deter crime) https://math.dartmouth.edu/~lamperti/my%20DP%20paper,%20current%20edit.htm
is often applied in error https://www.cbsnews.com/news/death-penalty-mistakes-the-rule/
and is probably a tool of racism https://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/09/opinion/09dow.html
FWIW I enjoy shooting and have little time for SJW types; OTOH, taxes are merely the cost of renting time on the massive piece of capital equipment known as "society" ; it is possible that even a 90% marginal rate can be justified; maybe: something like this https://web.archive.org/web/20130411183250/http://www.sff.net/people/jack.haldeman/people.htm might male it more palatable

You are going to have to open it up and unplug the wifi antenna, and attach an attenuator in its place.
Or just install tinfoil wallpaper in your living room, but I've heard that may amplify the mind control rays.

Yes, it was the Boskone
I'm a bit over 60 years old, fwiw. Yes, used book stores ftw. I scored a used first edition of Babel-17 at one. It's in good shape, and it brings back memories of the first time I read it. I still like physical copies of books, though I buy the e-books of authors I like to support. My local library has a thrift shelf where they offer their retired paperbacks, hardcovers, and even DVDs and Blu rays, for a quarter or less (a buck for the disks though), and they also have book sales in the basement once in a while. Btw, most of Galaxy Magazine has been scanned and uploaded to archive.org. Amazing stuff! Just look for the zoom feature on the page, otherwise the text is too small to rad, imo. Many classic SF novels have been scanned at archive.org as well, and can be checked out. All totally legally of course! https://archive.org/details/ga...

Re:FAILURE TO COMPETE
The charges don't make any sense. The claim that they tried to steal a robot from T-Mobile called "Tappy". T-Mobile didn't build it though, it's an off-the-shelf Epson robot with some basic programming.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
http://web.archive.org/web/201...It seems extremely unlikely that Huawei would bother steal something that they could just buy and get an undergrad to program for them. All i does is press some buttons in sequence over and over to see how long they take to fail. Some simple calibration for pressure to simulate a heavy handed user is all you need.
Huawei didn't steal 5G tech, it invented it. Its patents cover the modulation schemes, the bandwidth allocation and spectrum sharing, the power management that minimizes interference and maximizes battery life. If those things were stolen then they would have been patented elsewhere, or the patents challenged. It's original technology that China developed.

Re: Well, they can
"Everybody's gotta be covered... I am going to take care of everybody... everybody's going to be taken care of much better than they're taken care of now... [The uninsured person is] gonna be taken care of... The government's gonna pay for it". -- Donald Trump
He didn't really have a plan for healthcare at that point. His line of thinking was likely that he* was going to come up with something so good, everyone would be able to afford healthcare. It was the proverbial "chicken in every pot" (which never actually implied that the government would be providing the chickens - you'd presumably be doing so well, you'd be able to buy your own chicken!).
Trump's actual plan for healthcare reform has fallen into the internet bit bucket. Thankfully, the Internet Archive picked up the slack. In a nutshell, it's what I previously wrote - Trump figured letting the market duke things out would make things better for consumers. Just like it has worked so well for cable companies. That was sarcasm, if you couldn't tell.
Point being, there was plenty of time before the election to realize Trump opposed universal healthcare, and it was very likely that protections for preexisting conditions were in jeopardy. Since winning the election, Trump has given no indication he wants to do anything other than dismantle the ACA and let those that have theirs, have theirs, and those that don't, do without.
* (more likely, he planned on asking someone to come up a great healthcare solution for him and then he'd take the credit)

Long live the classic Mac
I'm really happy to see that the vintage Mac community is alive and active as these machines still have so much creative potential. I restored my Mac SE/30 just in time for the 30th anniversary of its release and have been using it to make pixel art with MacPaint and 8 voice music with Super Studio Session.
I once had it on the Internet with an Ethernet card on the PDS slot, but ever since the hard drive died, I haven't bothered setting up the Internet connection again because I've discovered that the functional constraints of the system actually encourage me into a focused "flow" experience.
I hope this new platform eventually supports HyperCard stacks. There's been a nice resurgence thanks for the Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/hy..., and I'd love to distribute some adventure games without using a Javascript virtual machine.

Broken link - Slashdot on mobile doesn't give a preview, a shame Slashdot is a lowbrow clickbait factory without anyone competent running it. Anyway, link here which was recently updated to delete the offending "The NBPC disagrees with wasting taxpayer money on building fences and walls along the border" (it does say that if policies aren't changed to combat illegal immigration properly, then wall and fences are needed)

The Visible Computer: 6502
Here's some info from the manual:
"The Visible Computer: 6502 Machine Language Teaching System combines
this manual with a 6502 simulator program to provide a systematic way
to learn machine language programming on Apple II computers. The Visible Computer is a program that teaches programming. The title
is a takeoff on those transparent plastic models of men that once (and
maybe still do) populated sixth grade classrooms. Like The Visible
Man, The Visible Computer lets you see into a place not normally
accessible to the eye. Places like chest cavities and accumulators,
address latches and pancrei. Unlike The Visible Man, TVC requires no
assembly, no careful painting, and no smelly airplane glue."TVC was a powerful combination of text, graphics and a kind of animation that showed things like registers changing as a program was executed. You could slow or even step thru a program and watch all elements moving around. At its fastest, the emulated program was still very slow in the early Apple computer, but the important thing was seeing it in action and really understanding what's under the hood. Simple to look at, elegant in execution. A version was available for Commodore 64, both by Charles Anderson.
This concept could be done today for modern computers if someone cared enough about coding education. You can see the 1982 manual here: https://archive.org/details/Th...

Re:Not possibleNot sure where you're getting that distorted claim from. In 2007 he referenced a study that supposedly warned that the Arctic could be ice-free during summer by 2014:
Last September 21, as the Northern Hemisphere tilted away from the sun, scientists reported with unprecedented distress that the North Polar ice cap is “falling off a cliff.” One study estimated that it could be completely gone during summer in less than 22 years. Another new study, to be presented by U.S. Navy researchers later this week, warns it could happen in as little as 7 years.
I'm don't know where he got that study from, but it's certainly possible for some study to reach that conclusion by extrapolating from known data if trends had held up. What studies Al Gore cherry-picks does not have to represent the state of scientific consensus, but he's right in that the Arctic ice is shrinking at a considerable rate.

Internet Archive
Has anyone gone to the Internet Archive and tried to get the map from there? I get an error when it starts loading Google Maps but the border does show up. I think it's the way my browser is configured. If it had worked I was going to post a screen shot of the map on Twitter saying it's the map that Turkey doesn't the world to see. Maybe someone else can do it.

Here's a 1995 MSDN article on iDispatch in COM
Here's an article that Microsoft added to MSDN in 1995.
The second half of the article covers iDispatch, a style of COM interface.
https://web.archive.org/web/20...Here's the 1996 Microsoft announcement officially announcing the ActiveX name and their strategy for presenting it as a web technology, in which they say "ActiveX controls (formerly COM components)". The Microsodt announcement says thousands of COM/ActiveX components were already available, but could now be used in the web browser (IE 3.0).
According to Microsoft's announcement, ActiveX controls" were formerly called "COM components". According to their announcement, many companies had already been making them, as "COM" for desktop software, prior to IE 3.0 supporting them and the change to the ActiveX branding. One reason I remember this so clearly is that I was one of the people making COM components at the time it was rebranded ActiveX. I know I didn't have to change my software in order to make my existing COM components, including a styleable linear "slider" control I designed, into ActiveX components - the only change was the branding.
You are correct that Active Desktop was September 1997.
