Re:A brief lesson on prions...
No, I am not a microbiologist, I am just a lowly student that has to bow down to microbiologist profs.
By understanding how the creation of prions (may) happen, prevention methods may be found out. For instance, if an overload of chemical A over chemical B in a cell causes protein C to fold a certain way, one might either reduce chemical A levels, keep chemical B levels up, prevent chemical A from getting to protein C, or simply reversing the fold before protein C gets to protein D.Minority Report shows a sort of example of this: stop the disease by fully understanding it and stopping before it happens. This may involve a lot of science (which may include the horrid bad science ), but it does look promising and more research into it is very exciting.
There are many spectulated culprits ( randomness, heredities and free radicals ), but I believe I am going to be one of those graduate students doing 1000s of hours of expirments and research on this. Or maybe I will write a bash script for it instead (bash 3.0 released!)

Re:www.google.comObligatory bash quote:
<dm> I discovered that you'd never get an answer to a problem from Linux Gurus by asking. You have to troll in order for someone to help you with a Linux problem.
<dm> For example, I didn't know how to find files by contents and the man pages were way too confusing. What did I do? I knew from experience that if I just asked, I'd be told to read the man pages even though it was too hard for me.
<dm> Instead, I did what works. Trolling. By stating that Linux sucked because it was so hard to find a file compared to Windows, I got every self-described Linux Guru around the world coming to my aid. They gave me examples after examples of different ways to do it. All this in order to prove to everyone that Linux was better.
* ion has quit IRC (Ping timeout)
<dm> brings a tear to my eye... :') so true..
<dm> So if you're starting out Linux, I advise you to use the same method as I did to get help. Start the sentence with "Linux is gay because it can't do XXX like Windows can". You will have PhDs running to tell you how to solve your problems.
<dm> this person must be a kindred spirit of mine

Turns out Cliffe is a star in South Korea, as many players and game designers are in a nation with the highest broadband penetration in the world and the biggest mmorpg, in terms of registered users, ever (Lineage ~ 4 million subscribers). It's good to see talented young people get the credit and the fame they deserve, even in a country where pop songs are all about Starcraft... -

Re:Multi-platform
Just because it's Java doesn't mean it will run on everything. It will run on a lot of things, I'll give you that, but I personally find the Linux x86 version of Java to have many errors with it's forms that aren't present in the Win32 version. My bank's online banking system was a great example of this, then they started using HTML to do everything (probably after people complaining).
Flash is a slightly better option, as the specs are published such that you can make your own player/interpreter. Though it won't work on old hardware. Using scripts on the server end and allowing access via a web browser would be best, and possibly have the option of wether or not you wish to use Flash for the more techincal bits that HTML can't do.
They could have written it in <insert open scripting language here>, using <insert favourite widget toolkit>. That would have done the trick, provided it's well supported across most platforms and isn't difficult or huge to install.
I'll leave you with a quote which is fairly relevant to your comment
:P -
My List.
For IRC, I use irssi. It's neat, small, fast, and does what I need it to. Also, I haven't had the need to change any of its stock options yet - I like it the way it is. Other candidates are BitchX (annoying autoaway etc.), ircII (too much configuring, maybe?), or CenterICQ (don't like the interface for IRC).
CenterICQ is my app of choice for IM. It's quirky sometimes, and once segfaulted, but other than that, I have had 0 problems with it. Also, it supports a variety of protocols.
For web-browsing, I use links. I've tried lynx and w3m, but links just "does it" I guess
:). It's got support for more stuff. Also, I find the -g option nice, something the other two don't have IIRC.I've tried Emacs, Pico, Nano, ed, etc. etc. etc., but so far, nothing has replaced my addiction to Vim. Maybe I'm a masochist, I don't know.
When I'm at home in console mode, I usually use Alt+Fx to switch between different apps, and use screen to keep irssi and centericq running. When over ssh, I use screen. Sometimes, I run out of VTs, so I use screen to group things inside the VTs. When in X, I just keep things in separate rxvt windows.
For entertainment, I have either NetHack, fortune -o, or bash.org (aww shit, slashdotted them, they're down enough as it is!) in links.

<mfbian_> how will you compare slackware and freebsd
<Cheethoe> apples and oranges
<mfbian_> fair enough
<`justin`> slackware = for people that have been molested freebsd = people that want to molest their mothers
<`justin`> openbsd = for people that probably wont ever get molested
<`justin`> netbsd = molesting of all minorities, and cock asians
<mfbian_> how about gentoo
<`justin`> I dont know ask khai
--> biggy (something@1Cust26.tnt1.columbus.in.da.uu.net) has joined #slackware
<`justin`> oh wait I do know
<mfbian_> you don't know anything
--> supergoad (~supergoad@pcp08611785pcs.waldrf01.md.comcast.net ) has joined #slackware
<`justin`> mfbian_: gentoo = people that want to molest their mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, sisters, brothers, dogs, but can't get it up

Re:In response to the anticipated flood ...
As the bash.org quote goes:
The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
Stupid people will continue doing stupid things, and remove themselves from existence over time (possibly removing smart people too, but they'd be unlucky anyway. =) )

<Arctic_Wolf> My friends parents bought him the nice DDR pads so he could lose some weight.

<Arctic_Wolf> "HOW IS ARMORED CORE 2 SUPPOSED TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT, WONG?"

South Park on DDR...Heh... Gotta mention it. A few episodes back, Stan needed help for a dance competition and they go to an arcade to inlist the help of an asian DDR player.
*Stan and a goth watch as the asian kid dances frantically.*
Stan: Oh my god... he's really good.
Goth: He should be, he's spent like $6,000 on that thing.
*Asian kid stops playing, Stan approaches him.*
Stan: You're really good, kid... would you help me in my dance competition?
Asian kid: You mean dancing without a machine telling you what to do?And as long as I'm trying to be funny, why not look at QDB on the subject of DDR, too.
