Re:I want...
...a portable, discman type DVD player that will play audio CD's, DVD's, CD-R's and DVD's with mp3s.
Simple gray LCD display, simple controls. You could listen to music with headphones or plug it into a TV for video (throw in Divx decoding, maybe).
How about a $99 price point?
How about $180 and with a color screen?
There's plenty of portable DVD players. But you're right, they need to drop the price point or otherwise you might was well buy a laptop. If these players had firewire and optical out, I'd be a little more inclined to consider one. -
Sony RM-VL900
Following the reviews of Remote Central, I picked up a Sony RM-VL900 a few months ago. Admittedly it may be more than $50 (I got mine for $59.99 at Best Buy) but you should be able to hunt around a get it for close to that price point.
It is truly universal - the codes in the manual covered all of my equipment except for a few buttons on the DVD changer and the Receiver. They were absolute cake to learn with the original remotes, though.
The range is solid for a remote in this price bracket, and it's taken more abuse over the last 4 months than many of my previous original and universal remotes. Dropping, sitting on, stepping on, etc.
I've had a few touch screens in the past and even allowing for their superior flexibility in programming and button labeling, etc etc, this is my favorite of all the universal remotes I've tried. Just can't beat the tactility of the hard buttons, anyway. ;)

MP3s to be given to 100 students
.....The MP3s in question are old albums and individual songs. The cost shouldn't be too high, there are 100 people in the class with Macs and PCs.........
With the fast CD writers available today, this might do the job for you and might take less time than setting up the server, managing server security and authentication etc...
But then again, don't break any copyright law!

How About a TV Instead?
By the looks of the sugguestions here, people are pointing out to the PVR 250 and 350 series that runs between $135-$200 on froogle.
For that price you could pick up a decent Television to watch your movies and TV while you're trolling on /.
It would just make more sense to me.. unless you really want to turn your rig into a TiVo, i would just buy a TV. You'll most likely be using your extra hard disk space to rip movies from your camera anyway, not to save episodes of star trek. Let others do that and get them from kazaa =) -
Re:Yawn
From one armchair analyst to another:
I've used my PS2 to play DVDs. It's akin to using my Dreamcast to surf the web; It just isn't worth the effort. Granted I don't have a PS2 DVD remote kit, but the navigation system is terrible out of the box. Better chalk up an extra $15 for the PS2 remote once you realize that it's practically needed.
You're right though. For sixty more than the price of a Gamecube, you can get a DVD player. Heck, you can even get one much cheaper than that if you want. Think about that, a $30 that comes with a remote! You'll pay that much for the Xbox remote alone.
The GC is capable of doing 480p for those HDTV owners. I'm also thinking that anyone who spends the big bucks on an HDTV set will get a decent DVD player instead of relying on their game console to do it for them. -
Virtually indestructible keyboard
There are several membrane only keyboards on the market but most are too mushy. the "Virtually Indestructible Keyboard" from Grandtec has semi-solid key tops so you know when you have pessed the key far enough unlike others on the mrket that have keycaps as mushy as the sides of the keys. Radio Shack and Best Buy have carried then in their stores so take a look. BTW this message was typed on their black USB verion.

santa?
anyone ever consider the kind of characters that get jobs as santa in the mall? what kind of person wants to be paid to have a bunch of rugrats sit on his lap all day?
all i want for christmas is the ignorance to be gone from the world, for tech support to always know my answers, and for my freakin' slackware server to run centericq and connect to ALL the protocols ALL the time. i want a toilet that works all the time, neighbors that dont play Robert Palmer from 2AM-4AM as loud as possible, and friends who call me even when they DONT have questions about computers. i want a boyfriend who will ALWAYS be sensitive and caring, and who will rub my feet when i get home from work, and children that will cook dinner and wait on me hand and foot.and for the supermarket workers to stop striking so that life can return to normal.
realizing i'll never have it because i dont believe in santa clause is possibly one of the most depressing things ever.

Re:Don't do it for cost
40 Hour TiVo w/DirecTV reciever. Brand new $99
Lifetime TiVo service $299
Total $398... And you don't have to do any work.
Though I don't know why you would buy lifetime service instead of paying the $4/month for service through DirecTV. You're probably going to upgrade in less than 6 years. -

Corporate Sabotage?
I'm awefully distressed that Apple's music player isn't getting more recognition in consumer electronics houses. I went to Best Buy recently to pick up a much needed case fan, and was surprised to see that they carry iPods. Unfortunately, they have all their iPods in a locked transparant glass case at floor level, making it very difficult to look inside. Additionally, all the iPod boxes are oriented in such a way that the size is the only visible part of the box. On top of this case is the latest offering from Creative Labs, in a nice clear plastic case, showing off the (rather bulky) HDD MP3 player. It is impossible see what the iPod even looks like in the display. As I was doing my Christmas shopping at the time, I had my own iPod with me. I was asked about it by two moderately interested individuals, who were complete unaware of the presence of the product in the store. It's really too bad that the bottom line plays such a big role in the way these products are marketted. Best Buy has a much more significant markup on the other MP3 players, but its a little deceiteful to tuck the good stuff away like that. OK, enough of my griping. - J. B.

23 Midway arcade classics for $20
This looks pretty cool. It will retail for $20, be released for all three consoles, apparently feature 3/4 player support on xbox/gamecube, will support a global high scores list on xbox via Xbox Live, and contains: "Spy Hunter, Defender, Defender II, Gauntlet, Joust, Joust II, Paperboy, Rampage, Marble Madness, Robotron 2084, Smash TV, Bubbles,
RoadBlasters, Blaster, Rampart, Sinistar, Super Sprint, 720, Toobin', Klax, Splat!, Satan's Hollow, and Vindicators" (!!)
Another thing to look out for if you've got a Gamecube: Once Dec 6 comes, you will be able to buy "Pac Man Vs.", a really cool-looking 4-player Pac Man game (Player One uses a GBA and plays Pac-Man; Players 2-4 play on the gamecube, and play ghosts. The ghosts cannot see the entire board.), for $20 bundled with Pac Man World 2. You can also get this game free if right now you order I-Ninja or "R: Racing Evolution".
Also if you have a Gamecube: bestbuy.com is still selling Ikaruga for $20 with free shipping!! Trust me. YOU WANT THIS GAME. It is considered by many to be the greatest space shooter game of all time. -

Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Comcast to Offer Online Music
2003-11-11 13:10:14 Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Comcast to Offer Online Music (articles, music) (rejected)
Wal-Mart will launch its own digital music download service through its Web site later this month. Not to be outdone, Best Buy will also launch an iTunes-type online music store - with the ability to buy through in-store kiosks - based on the MusicNow service (formerly FullAudio). And today Comcast announced music downloads via Real Rhapsody for its 5 million broadband Internet subscribers. The Washington Post's Cynthia L. Webb writes about the online music frenzy and the resultant advertising onslaught due to the sheer number of entrants into the music download market, while Bloomberg's Holly M. Sanders offers an analysis of Walmart's imminent entry into online music, which is significant since Wal-Mart already controls 14 percent of global CD music sales. More at the New York Times (via SeattlePI).

Re:I have a Lexmark printer ...
Actually, it is the other way around. Places like Best Buy and OfficeMax enjoy the healthier margins on the brand-name ink. Heck - they even get the printer makers to omit the USB cable so that they can charge $20 for a part.
A while ago (when USB printers first became the dominant style), I had some real fun. I loaded up a cart with thousands of dollars worth of computer stuff (that I was legitimately going to purchase) and a printer was part of it. When I found out that the *cheapest* USB cable in the store would cost me $20, I just left the salesmen standing there with their thumbs in their asses.
I ordered a *hundred* USB cables for a dollar and I keep them in my trunk. Now, Best Buy is a necessity for me at times because it is convenient. Whenever I go, I stop by the printer aisle and give a cable or two away to anyone who mich need one. It saves them $20 and makes me feel a little better about actually spending my money at such a crooked store.
The interesting thing is that Lexmarks are sold *with* a USB cable at places like RiteAid and other convenience stores. -
Re:Best Buy?
I wonder why Best Buy would sell Napster cards, because they're already selling Real's Rasphody service in their stores.

Re:overly simplistic
There is a difference between Blank CD-R's and Music CD-R's. I'm not sure I've got the links right, but if you go into best buy, over in the computer section, there's the computer CD-R's, and over near the CD's and Movies, there's the blank Audio CD-R's, which usually come in 30 packs and are more expensive. It's the "audio CD-R's" that you are paying the premium for recording music on. So unless you've been buying the more expensive kind of CD-R's, you haven't been stacking up credit towards downloading music.
The catch is that (as I'm sure most everyone on slashdot knows) CD-R's and Music CD-R's are identical, or virtually identical. I think since the higher spindle speeds of CD-R/W drives for comptuers, they have had to mess with the computer CD-R's, as the Music ones were origionally designed to be used in the "dual deck duplicators" over near the CD players in the Audio section, which burn at about 2x or 4x. But, we all know that almost every CD player will read a CD-R, even if it's been burned at 52x.
The riaa should learn from this lesson, too. If you try to charge someone more for a product because you assume they're going to do something illegal, people will find a way to get around the higher price. Proactive high prices don't fly in a capitalist society where everyone is waiting for the sale price, and unwilling to believe bullshit about "these are for data, those are for music" when they're identical except for the price.

Don't Worry: The 2nd one only had 30 min of Acting
Honestly I think the review at bestbuy.com for Matrix Reloaded is fitting and accurate. I figure I'm going to buy the movie, edit it on the computer to get rid of everything that doesn't advance the movie or plot... and end up with about 30 minutes of material.
Put in a 5 disc DVD changer and I can watch the entire marathon, assuming the 3rd one is as good as the first, and not have to get up. If the 3rd is as pathetic as the 2nd, then I might be able to fit the trilogy onto 2 dvds ;-)

Re:An Idea..
For the cost of a couple of hundred writable CD's and some time a lot of good could be done to a very good target audience.
That would be AWESOME! Get a spindle of those little bitty CD's that hold like 175 MB's (the 3 inch ones like these) and just burn the linux kernel onto each one.
Write on them, in sharpie, "SCO's business model is based on selling you this free software".
Then hand them out at the show.
Oh, it's brilliant! Also, put like an autorun.info or whatever makes things run in windows and have it pop up like a flash or html presentation of why we think SCO is full of shit.

P.S. The SCO code bounty is up to $350 on pink fairies, and no one has claimed it as of yet. Not that I suspected that anyone would, but no one has come forth with code "from the inside" yet.

Re:DVDs
You do realize that HD TVs cost thousands don't you? That they are also not mainstream?
I live in Canada, so I just went for a quick check at what I think is the most common US electronics retailer:
27" HDTV for $500.
Besides which, FCC has mandated that all television broadcasters offer HDTV digital broadcast by 2006. HDTV is coming, and it will be mainstream. A new format for movies taking advantage of it is also inevitable. Currently, that format is HD-DVD, which will not be playable on PCs (amongst other restrictions).
I will agree that the movie industry has made more concessions to fans than the music recording industry has (not hard). But maybe the MPAA will manage to fool the public with video quality good enough that you can see each individual pore on Val Kilmer's face or somesuch. The technology behind HD-DVD seems pretty good, it's just the restrictions (intended to stop copying) that suck. -
Re:It's not the standards, people
Do the Macs at CompUSA allow people to access the CD drive? If so, just waltz in, pop in the disc, test it, get your disc, and waltz out.
You know, you're onto something. Actually I've heard of a large software company who plan to tear down their building and send all developers build and debug in local stores. -
Re:Nice spin doctoring ...
BestBuy.com has 50 TDK CD-Rs for $13 - $10 mail-in = $3. I wouldn't count on ever seeing that $10 in the mail though.

Best Buy
I've been drooling over this thing for awhile at the Best Buy site. You might also be able to get it directly from Archos.
I was hoping that this might show up on the dell site. Even though they are freaking slow, they might have a sweet deal. Unfortunately, they only have the older Multimedia Jukebox. -
All these blackout stories..
Okay, okay, I'm convinced!
Time to order a UPS...
Will this do? -
It just isn't true.
Anyone else tired of this oft-touted, but plainly false claim about Apple pricing?:
Today, PCs have little price advantage over Macs. Apple's eMac, designed as a low-cost model for school systems, costs $50 more, at most, than a comparable low-end PC.
The cheapest eMac I could find is $799.00. That includes: 800MHz PowerPC G4, 128MB SDRAM, 40GB Ultra ATA drive. CD-ROM drive.
I could get equivalent PC power for under $200, I am sure, but it is hard to find such a slow CPU to compare that to. Even a 2GHz AMD system, with more than the above, can be had at Best Buy for under $550 with a 2" larger monitor (under $500 with a 17" like the eMac). (Model: T2341 is $399, add a 19" monitor for $149, 17" for $100).
It's OK to love mac, and OSX makes me like them also, but don't lie and say they are $50 more. It just isn't true. -

Re:Cassette Adapters
Why, oh why, can't they just start giving us a 1/8th input jack on car stereos?? I've been wanting this for years,
There are plenty of them out there. I've never seen one on a stock auto-stereo, but take a trip to your local Best Buy / Circuit City etc.. and you'll see them available.
The very first model to pop up on Best Buy's page has one. I'm sure you can find more. -
Preorder for cheap + Useful Link
You can preorder the Indiana Jones Trilogy for $44.95 at Bestbuy.com. I didn't link directly to their product page to avoid looking like I'm trying to make some $$$ on referrals. However, you can click through your favorite 'hot deals' website if you preorder & still get it for $44.95 while earning them a few cents in the process; Or just go to their website and search for "Indiana DVD" and it will be the top two links FYI: The Widescreen edition SKU is 5721463 & the Full Screen SKU is 5721454.
And don't forget to check out Spielberg Films for fairly up-to-date news.
From their Temple of Doom page: It looks like the news previously reported regarding extra features on the fourth disc of the INDY set was on the money as the bonus disc will include documentaries on "The Making of the Trilogy", "The Sound and Music of Indiana Jones", "The Special Effects of Indiana Jones" and "The Stunts of Indiana Jones".
DVDFile says the "Making Of" doc will be a "new full-length documentary", so its safe to assume that the documentary will be a substantial, feature-length look at the making of the trilogy.
No word is made about deleted scenes, but amazon.com's spec list did state they would be present. Judging by the accuracy of the other extras they named, things are pointing to their inclusion, but you never know until the discs is in our grubby hands. -
Similar to BestBuy hoax?
This sounds similar to the recent BestBuy hoax.

And in other news....
Today, thousands of Radio Shack and other electronics stores were all raided by the US Marshalls service for selling and/or manufacturing "anti-circumvention" devices as prohibited by 17-USC-1201 - the DMCA.
Early reports indicate that the items that are causing these retail outlets such grief are commonly known as patch-cables.
According to Harvey Buttnut, well known computer geek, these patch cables can be used to pipe the analog audio from a CD player into the audio input of a computer - allowing the computer to make a recording of the CD with minimal quality loss and no more copy protection.
Lawyers for Sony Corp. at the law firm of Dewey, Cheatham and Howe confirmed that it was their investigation that led to the raids on these stores. Apparently, the lawyers' son had accidentily purchased a DRM protected CD from a music store and wanted to play the content on a portable MP3 player.

Re:"incompatible"
"This must be an American thing? No? Seen it said so many times on here."
Well, it definitely happens in America. I can't tell you how it works elsewhere, so I don't know if it's an 'American thing' or not.
Check out Best Buy's return policy here, notice the exceptions made for copyrighted stuff.
http://www.bestbuy.com/infoCenter/Policies/Returns .asp
Best Buy is a huge chain here and they have a pretty good return policy, but they don't back down on CDs,DVDs, or Games. I agree with you that it's in a store's best interests to satisfy the customer. Unfortunately, these places don't agree. I remember somebody at Electronics Boutique telling us that was the law, but I'm not really sure if that's true these days. During Christmas time, games can be returned even if they're opened.
It's stupid. Customer satisfaction should be the #1 priority here. Sadly, they'd rather screw us. They think we should buy the CD for keeps before finding out what's on it, then they have the nerve to be shocked that Mp3s became a big thing.
There's a reason Dilbert is so popular over here. -

Neither First nor Unique - Look at iRiver Products
I've had an iRiver iFP-395TC for about three months now ( http://www.iriveramerica.com). It is an 512MB MP3 player with FM receiver/recorder and memo recorder.
The higher end of the iFP line has these features with varying amounts of Flash. Memos and recordings can be uploaded into a PC. It doesn't have a "pause" feature, like you would want on a "PAR". I've been using it to record "The House of Blues" on the weekend and then listen to it at my desk at work.
Nice box and I highly recommend it. Too bad its so hard to find (rumour has it Best Buy stocks different models of the iFP line but I have never seen them in stock). I ended up buying mine directly from iRiver.

Re:Microsoft cannot be punished... (sigh)
Microsoft ships their browser for free with the OS
It's a pretty wide gap of logic to call shipping it with the OS "free". The last time I checked Windows XP cost $200.
MS is slapped on the wrist by the Gov't and promises to play nice, ships OS update to remove the IE icon from the desktop.
Indeed, Microsoft had to release a tool to allow the end user to pretend it didn't exist if they wanted. However the "removing an icon" isn't some big win for the consumer: That whole debate was about the right of VAR's, not consumers, to choose what you would get. In other words it's moving the forceful control from one large company to another. (Don't think Mega Hardware Company wanted the right because they love you. They want the right to get into lucrative cross promotion agreements. If Microsoft didn't maintain brand control over your desktop, I wouldn't at all be surprized to see some brands shipping with ads on the desktop. Maybe preinstalled Gator).
MS announces even tighter integration of IE into the OS.
To me the tighter integration is exactly what many critics wanted: Now to get IE 7 (or the integrated simile) you'll have to buy the next operating system: There is no way anyone can call that "free". Microsoft's claims that it was part and parcel with the operating system before was hard to justify given that one could download the same newer version for older OS', and even for alternate OS'. -
Fun game, good price for Thief I & II
Thief I & II are also fun games with some good gameplay. Unfortunately, I can't stand games that try to animate the act of walking by having the entire view wobble up and down everytime you take a step in the game. Unreal Tournament 2003 has this, but you can turn it off and I find the game much more playable with the "walking wobble" turned off. Does anybody know if this can be turned off in Thief?
If you want to get Thief I & II, Best Buy has a great deal here. You can buy both of them as part of the Thief: Platinum Collection for $14.99 with free shipping.

Here's what I would do...
I've built a PC for use as a VCR which uses a ATI Radeon 8500DV video card. This card is nice for a varitey of reasons, but one of the main strenghts (for me) is that it comes with a connector supporting a variety of inputs and outputs.
By the way, you could basically do this with any decent/modern/1Ghz+ system & the aforementioned video card -Or one similar to it (The ATI 7500's a reputable alternative). But anyway...
In my case I've got a variety of peripherals tied into my 8500 via a Video Switcher (example: $50 ), and I run the output of this switcher through a signal enhancer (example: $50) before it's ran into the 8500's S-Video input.
One of the things connected via the switcher is a nice 4-head stereo VCR. By running the VCR through the enhancer, I can get quite good copies of video tapes.
Similarly, by running Showshifter (or another PVR / recording package -But Showshifter has some really nice DivX capabilities built in), I'm able to automatically encode the VCR's output as a stereo, high-quality DivX file in real time.
Or you could use any other video codec really. If it was something you wanted to edit, or preserve at high quality, you could record in a non-lossy codec, edit as needed in a video editor (Virtual Dub's a good place to start), and then encode down to a DivX (or again... Any codec. AVI, Mpeg, DivX, or even... Windows Media Format).
A side bonus of running the video switch through the enhancer is that a DVD player's output can be piped through and recorded as the enhancer removes the copy-protection. Not that I'd ever hook a DVD player up to my video switch to find this out (or to record a few rented DVD's for that matter), but one could do so if one wanted too.
Either way, the resulting video files can either be converted to VCD or SVCD (These both are burned onto regular CD's, with the former fitting slightly more, lower-resolution video on the CD than the latter. Both are also playable in the majority of modern DVD players), or DVD (self-explanatory) formats via programs such as Nero . I'm not an expert on the lifetime degredation of either CD or DVD media, but both are arguably going to be around and in good shape longer than some old VHS tapes.
Another option is to burn them as data files onto any of the aforementioned media, and set them up with an autorun software package so that your intended viewers can just pop it in a PC and go (another up and coming option here). Doing it this way offers the capability to save higher resolution video, but it also requires that your viewers view it either on a PC, or on a TV connected to a PC. There's some other pros and cons as well, but that's the basics from my point of view.
For archiving old VHS footage, I would reccomend recording the video via a method similar to what I've described above, and then outputting the footage as a regular old DVD. DVD's can support... what is it? 704x480 or something like that, and that's way higher than the 320x200 or whatever that standard TV broadcasts at (and this is likely the resolution you'd have on VHS tapes, I'm guessin'). This would ensure you wouldn't have to lose much if any quality, and the resulting footage will be viewable either on a consumer DVD player, or on a PC via a DVD drive, which are more or less standard these days.
Similarly, with 4x DVD burners hitting the "below $300" market, it's a good investment as you can back up your other data and videos when you're done archiving tapes. If that's not enough, you'll also be able to sample the -

How about Two for $16?
If you look through their regular selection of movies, you'll find many DVDs are $10 or less. -

Rhapsody
I can't find it anywhere on their website, but Best Buy has an advertisement for "Rhapsody" in their stores. I don't know who is promoting it. They are selling them ala Netflix, but I fear that their might be a real music company backing it. The service plan would be $19.95/mo.
