IIRC, Steam is the graphics engine...

Well, you do not RC. Steam is Valve's proprietary DRM (OOH BAD WORDS) content delivery system, relying upon a great many other people to provide bandwidth and servers for things like game updates, updated modules for their anti-cheat (yes, think PunkBuster), and more recently, entire games. They even have Bram Cohen working on it.

If the protocols were to be blown too wide open--and source code theft will do that--it would arguably be (even more) trivial to fake the authentication process as you connected to a "secure" server, running as many cheats as you wanted.

Of course, ask most Half-Life players, and they'll say VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) is worthless in its current state anyway. Let's hope they have something up their sleeve that'll coincide with or preempt the Half-Life 2 release, even if it's just extra effort doing updates to the modules. Somehow I think their attention has been elsewhere for a while.

Why on earth would you submit your own website when you know it will go down in a matter of seconds?

I've been thinking a bit about this lately. What if you could set up a webserver to act like a bittorrent seed. That way, when there's normal use people would just connect to the seed/server, then under load the bandwidth becomes distributed across all users.

It's a crazy idea, and some thought would need to be put in for dynamic pages ... but it just might work.

Bittorrent seems to pick random pieces, which is impossible to use in a live streaming environment. You have to get the bits in the order like it was written in the original file.

(for the few who don't know, the more people downloading something via bittorrent, the faster everyone's download occurs, as it's distributed downloading, unlike ftp... which hammers the servers)

BTW, this particular BitTorrent annoyance was fixed in version 3.3.

If you mean just the original installation, download the ISOs (this one's Red Hat Fedora, but you can Google for another) using bittorrent (I use Azureus). I believe that the Knoppix Live CD distro has its own installer.

BitTorrent.

BitTorrent Makes it easy to host multi-GB files from a relatively small pipe. Considering 768kbps upload can be had for $99 a month with 6Mbps down, $300 can buy you a lot of bandwidth. Once your P2P downloads are seeded (you have your customers uploading from their machines), your bandwidth usage tails off dramatically as your only demand now is that you have to run the tracker (ie: the thing that coordinates clients among themselves).

The official bittoreent client and the popular variations like abc and shadows are not spyware but there are a few around that have adware/spyware added. It's open source, opportunists are free to do that sort of thing.

I would. Large rewritable removable media is the last thing that MS wants. Built in DVD-R just screams for piracy. Besides, it's also a hassle to consumers that would have to switch discs frequently.

Look for extra game content to be stored online and distributed in a somewhat peer-to-peer model in the vein of BitTorrent. Be it a new multiplayer map or a single player campaign, the first user would download the content from the servers and the rest could get it from peers.

True. They may well be less than that in quantities but that doesn't automatically mean that they are cost effective. MS is finding the additional price for the built in hard disk drive in the current Xbox isn't cost effective and they probably get great deals on those.

Games didn't really use the HD much anyways.

From an end user standpoint, you're right. There are games that create obscenely large save games and a bit of downloadable content for others but aside from these (and custom soundtracks) the HDD doesn't seem to get much use.

The truth is that many games, mostly first and second party games, use it for virtual memory or for spooling data. A good chunk of the Xbox OS, such as the dashboard, is also on the drive. Granted the Xbox 2 will have much more than 64MB of RAM but developers will just have to deal with no HDD. Those that are programming for multiple platforms may not even notice.

An add-in hard disk drive could still be a viable option for games that absolutely need it but people will just have to plunk down more cash for it. Heck, people are already paying $200+ for Steel Battalion. Sony is banking on Final Fantasy XI to sell the PS2 HDD; MS could simply make it a requirement for Halo 3 if they want a maximum install base... and it's a bonus if it includes the ability to play old Xbox 1 games.

I then spent a couple of evenings on the net trying to find it. I had several files called GTA3.zip, and contained within them was a hockey game, an offroad game, and.. well I didn't recognize the name of it.

Godsdammit man, my mother can operate P2P software better than you can!

And we aren't collaborating in a group right now? People don't use Intranets and Internet email for what they would have bought Notes for in the mid-90s? I knwo for a fact that that's what happens at non-Microsoft shops. w.g. Oracle doesn't use Notes internally. It uses Internet email, web-based solutions and some collaborative addons of their own.

They aren't competitors. XML is just one of many protocols that can be used to implement CORBA. Corba is an Architecture, XML is a data transmission format.

I was talking about XML in the large: XML+SOAP+WSDL, etc. Obviously these are both pitched as enterprise integration technologies and XML-based ones have a lot more traction in business today (think .NET and Axis) than CORBA does.

You don't (if you are sane) use a scripting language to write enterprise-level apps like finance or CRM software, or secure distributed systems, or high-performance numerical software.

GNU Enterprise is finance software written in Python. Secure distribute systems in Python? How about mojo nation or ZEO, or the MEMS Exchange or BitTorrent. High performance numerical software? You'd better tell someone down at Lawrence Livermore National Labs that they are insane because they show up at every Python conference and by now have spent millions on Python code. I don't see Java or C# mentioned on their list of key languages. Java in particular is a horrible language for that sort of thing. Do a Google for "Java Floating Point".

Look: you can understimate Python just as the Unix vendors understimated Linux. In the long run it doesn't really hurt anyone, even you. It is always more comfortable to presume that things will stay in the mental boxes we've built for them in our minds.

is kazaa one of the vendors? is there anything they can do about emule or edonkey users?

the latter seem to traffic especially in things like leaked source RARs, and since most of the central servers are overseas and operated independently (and 'overnet' seems truly peer to peer with no central servers), it would be tough to crack down on them, besides having a bunch of fake clients that harvest IPs. anyone know if they do this?

(i imagine the same concept would apply for bittorrent downloaders -- except BT relies on central tracking servers which would be comparatively easy to shut down.)

Bittorrent is a small program that lets you download .torrent files. No spyware or adware.

4. Download. You can and should keep your torrent downloads open a while after you've finished downloading so the network stays alive.

I'm a bit fan of computer games. So I download a game demo or so a week. Modern games are big, and so are their demos. Sucking down a 500MB demo from various download mirrors sucks. Because of the huge bandwidth costs to serve the files the various mirrors force me to sign in, view ads, wait in queues, use Windows only spyware filled download programs (I often download in Linux in the background while doing Real World). Software publishers themselves generally don't release the demos themselves (because of the cost), they offload it onto one of these icky download sites. This entire process sucks.

Then came BitTorrent. If I can find a good source all is well. The software works great under Linux, it's open source, no spyware, and if the file is popular instead of waiting in line the download actually goes faster. BitTorrent is just about the only thing I do that saturates my cable modem bandwidth. Pulling down a huge demo in less than an hour is great. No longer do I fire off a download, then let my computer work on it for the rest of the night.

Now if software publishers would realize the joy of BitTorrent and release the torrents themselves everything would be better.

As a way to illegally share content BitTorrent isn't so good. But as a way to acquire legal but big content there is nothing like it.

It's damn good software. It was worth a donation to Bram.

- FTP - with IPs traded amongst friends/etc. (a crude P2P, in a sense)
- as well as a slew of others I'm not aware of, I'm sure.

All this knowledge simply from being online for a couple years. Imagine what a hardcore file trader is aware of.

you know you can throttle bittorrent's upload and download if you use it from the command line (btdownloadheadless.py specifically, available in the python source) and alternatively there is a mac client that has lots of nice features.

Where do you guys fileshare?
I currently use SoulSeek and BitTorrent with SuprNova.

As im sure alot of /.'s are aware their is a program out there called Bittorrent.

My preferred client is Bittorrent++.

Now, if you like to download stuff in an environment that kinda reminds me of the ol audiogalaxy days I strongly recommend you try out Suprnova.org. Obviosly this is still subjective to riaa 'snooping' as the clients dont appear to support ip range banning, but since they are Open source, anyone can be free to implement any sort of riaa spoofing/protection.

I think downloading games is great. I'd like to save a tree and lower oil dependence (plastic is made of oil and shipping the physical game package uses up oil, etc).

BUT many services are competing for my limited bandwidth, VoIP (Vonage), online music (Apple Music Store), streaming radio (somafm), BitTorrent. It makes me wonder if this promise is nothing more than a wishful thinking?

Until something is done about increasing bandwidth all these predictions read like a bad Popular Science article on flying cars.

BitTorrent does not always equal warez/moviez/gamez/etc. This would be a prime example of a legitimate use for the software.

This reminds me. Anybody seen a Bittorrent client for MacOSX that will allow caps on uploads? I'm using the official reference client from Bram and I have to use Carrafix to cap my uploads.
