Re:TripTik
Back in the 80s my family moved over a thousand miles away for dad to go to school. We were AAA members, and my parents visited the local AAA and got a TripTik. It seems they still have them (at least in name - seems to be an app or something now), but back then it was a linear map that was bound at the top. You would flip through the pages and the roadway you were to take was always oriented up / down along the paper. They would custom build it for you, inserting the appropriate sheets into the booklet, to get you to your destination. Then of course you could follow it backwards for the return trip. I remember they even manually highlighted the route, and would mark areas of construction on the map. They would also show points of interest and good places to stop.
Here are some pictures (random sources off the internet that match what I remember):

Re:More than half a dozen
I built my own antenna and bolted it to some supports in the roof. It works gangbusters for pulling in channels 40+ miles away and only cost me about $20 in materials, plus a couple of hours to put it together and get it mounted. Mostly of the cost was the spool of aluminum grounding wire (intended for lightning rods).

No, I confirm that you don't have a clue.
Look at this photograph:
https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R0q...You are claiming that this is artificially broken because the background is out of focus. The rest of the world recognise that the background is itself noise and blurring it out prevents it from ruining the picture of the girl and her bubbles.
But hell, you've shown your ignorance or hypocrisy already by suggesting this falls short of Renaissance artistry: I dont see any fucking detail in behind the portrait of Lisa Gherardini; I guess you must be unfamiliar with that particular painting.

Regarding Democrats blocking the collection of accurate statistics on defensive use of firearms, I am my own source. I watched and listened to it happen in the 90s during the first two years of the Clinton presidency when the AWB was passed.
You: "the Dims blocked them by statute!"
Me: "What statute?"
You: "[shuffle shuffle] I mean, I totally remember it..."Regarding the UK violence stat, sorry it didn't quite double, it went from 11% to 18%. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DJ-K...
You: "The UK banned guns and their violent crime rate doubled the next year!"
Me: "No, it didn't."
You: "[shuffle shuffle] Well, not the violent crime rate. Just the homicide rate. And not the next year, but 6 years later, during a massive global recession. And not doubled, but a 7% rise, which then fell when the economy improved 6 years later to the pre-recession, pre-gun ban levels."Just as a tip, you'd gain a lot more credibility if, instead of shuffling around, you actually admitted that you were wrong in your earlier post.

Re: Ugly Dashboard
Yeah, I have actually, my aunt happens to own a Ford Fusion. Hers is a 2015, and my Camry is 2013. I got my car the same year she got hers (I paid $10k cash for mine, salvaged.) Hers drives ok from my experience, but it's already having transmission problems. The only problem mine technically had was the result of its previous owner being involved in a wreck that damaged the front right wheel well, which was easily fixed, but that wasn't inherent in its build quality at all.
Every mechanic I know (and there are many in my family) hates Ford because they break often and suffer from designs that are very anti-mechanic, even to this day. This is why I say you have to throw it out after 5 years. There's a reason you don't see as many people drive around in older Fords as you do other brands, except for Ford trucks. The only reason you think otherwise is because the dealer did this to you:

Regarding police using firearms in the US, it is standard procedure to perform all felony arrests at gunpoint. You can use Google yourself if you are that interested.

Re: What does this do that Java does not?
The Bohem collector "uses a mark-sweep algorithm". I.e. NOT a modern GC
I'm not a C++ fan at all, but in this context this doesn't make sense. The vast majority of Java implementations (including the Oracle JDK) also use mark-sweep GC algorithms too, and many of the most cutting edge GC algorithms are mark-sweep algorithms. Boehm-Weiser uses a pretty sophisticated mark-sweep policy that is both generational and incremental.
http://javarevisited.blogspot.... notes that:
"Concurrent Mark Sweep Garbage collector is most widely used garbage collector in java and it uses an algorithm to first mark object which needs to collect when garbage collection triggers."http://www.oracle.com/webfolde... explains the current generational mark-sweep algorithm used by the Oracle JDK (standard Java).

Re:I hope they can sue IBM / jail someone
Well, our police-chief who aren't a police, prefer dialogue and socialism over catching criminals, before being the chief of the police he was the leader of the Migration office and the "Insurance" office (not the last resort welfare stuff but the welfare stuff you collect when you're sick or have a kid or to help pay for your apartment and such.)
.. they aren't the most trusted and popular of the government ran places and now he's totally managed to screw the police up too.But he's still on the job. Because Social-democrats.
The previous "looks like the best prime-minister candidate" of the social-democrats Ygeman had complete garbage history too. I don't remember it now but it included not paying for where he lived(?), lots of late payments but other shit too. Don't remember if it was that his educational background was junk or his jobs or whatever, it was basically all junk anyway.
Our current prime-minister is a social-democrat and he's a compulsive liar and his background is the metal union and
.. the social-democrats / their youth organisation. The one they had as leader before that was so shitty he had to go, the one before that is both shitty but also have had lots of unpaid parking tickets, bought private stuff on the account she should use for her job but a lot of other shit too. But I'm too lazy to watch a YouTube video of it all and I don't remember it all. But they are all complete garbage. And those are still supposed to be the elite of the social-democrats I guess..Picture of the police-chief: https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_...

Re:Wait, what?
Right, in general, we went through a very long period where the success and speed of AI research was wildly overestimated. However, in the last few years there have been many successes which came *faster* than most people anticipated. The success of AlphaGo is an excellent example: many AI people thought that it would take much longer for a Go-playing AI to beat the top players. There's also been a large amount of use of AI systems to do clever additional research on their own. One recent example is http://recursed.blogspot.com/2017/07/using-decision-method-to-prove-new.html and this is just becoming more not less common .

The Fine Print Society
The Fine Print Society
http://privatopia.blogspot.com/2011/12/fine-print-society.htmlby Evan McKenzie
Thursday, December 22, 2011As I go over all the bills and statements and announcements and changes to this or that plan or arrangement or contract that have flooded into my mailbox recently, it occurs to me that this is a form of concerted action. Corporate managers have collectively determined to overwhelm us with fine print. We can't possibly read all this crap, much less meditate like some 18th century aristocrat on the implications of the content. Yet we can't do so much as download an update to Adobe Acrobat without "signing" a contract. We are conclusively presumed to have read, understood, and agreed to every lawyer-drafted word, and yet everybody knows that none of us reads this. Not even Ron Paul -- so don't start with me. And the more of these contracts we get, the less likely it is that we will read any of them. So corporations have an incentive to send more of them and make them longer and more verbose. This is a collective decision on their part, and it is working, and they know it.
Nearly all of this stuff is enforceable, as many an HOA or condo unit owner has discovered, and it makes citizens relatively powerless. The private logic of contract law structures the relationship as individual consumer vs. big corporation with government as the enforcer of the contract, instead of citizens vs. powerful private organizations, with government as policy maker holding jurisdiction over the relationship.
The law calls these boilerplate documents "contracts of adhesion," but the days are long past when judges were willing to throw them out because they were drafted by one party and imposed on the other, there was gross inequality of bargaining power, and there was no real assent to the terms. Now they are deemed essential to the free flow of modern commerce.
My view has always been that policy makers should be willing to step in and reform these relationships if they become predatory or destructive. But there is little stomach for that presently.

eggs and oranges
I've noticed this, too, about the millennials.
With my N24 sleep disorder (three decades before I found the cure), I spent many long hours of my young adult life walking around on the streets at night (sure, Toronto sounds safe, but it had then one of the largest Italian populations in the world, as was certainly evident from the not-infrequent black limousine Sundays in my part of town; there was one "corner store" I stepped into, and out of again, after a single-pass 1978-vintage Cylon double take).
During those years I acquired a certain instinctive awareness of my surroundings that's impossible to attain doing the cellphone shuffle.
These days, I take an especially good look at anyone who witnesses my $300 monthly cash withdrawal from the ATM (which I use to buy eggs and oranges). But that's about it.
Late at night, I also tended to cross long streets diagonally, at random, somewhere in the middle, during a lull in traffic.
Tits of trouble: See that guy over there? He's following you
...Street-wise muscle [stares at "that guy" as if he's just received new information]: I know he's been tailin' my ass
... and now he knows I know it.Quietly alert, with a mildly distracted demeanor, a brisk, fluid gate, and navigationally unpredictable.
That's the formula.

Re:cool. Now make this for court as well
And that is fine. Do not show the jury on the camera. That is why I suggested that the camera should be court controlled. It can even allow for such things as masking voices, or even masking the witnesses, PRIOR to outing the video. BUT, it is only right that we get to see these.

Healthy beer? Get rid of the hops! Hops = poison.
It's well known that hops were added to beer by the church in 1516 through the "beer purity act" in order to quell it's people, counter-act the beers used in pagan rituals, and to extract taxes. Hops contains large amounts of estradiol, which converts in estrogen in the body and causes men to become fat, lazy, less virile, and less energetic. The church first noticed this when they found that girls working the hops began menstruating very early and men had decreased sexual desire. Before the beer purity act, beer contained a large variety of herbs and roots which were used to prevent spoilage in place of hops. Beers of the pre-hops period (now called "gruits") are more refreshing and less sleep-inducing than the hops-containing beers. So if you want to make a beer that isn't destructive to the body, get rid of the hops. It's that easy. http://brewgruit.blogspot.com/...

four words which should give you the answer you need "Laptev Sea Methane emissions"
There's somewhere between 1 and 5GT in that area and the keyword for probable effects is "Storegga"
Yeah, that's not good. http://arctic-news.blogspot.co...
While I don't care for the use of "Horrific", that isn't a particularly encouraging map. Interestingly, Greenland shows a pretty high amount of methane over the glaciated land, which I find troubling.

Re: Thank goodness we have Trump now
Lordy, what are you an RT rep?
I'm someone who's enjoying themselves immensely before I head to bed, since I just worked 37 hours straight. Gotta love severe weather right?
Boy oh boy. Look at all those russian bases surrounding the US. I sure would be feeling threatened if I was the US. Sorry you need to swap US for Russia. So you want to tell everyone when you're surrounded by NATO bases like that it wouldn't bother you? Think like a Russian when you do it.
Too bad Canada doesn't have free speech. And as of yesterday we have even less speech that is free. I'll just enjoy myself on that. You thought hard yet why the US should be allowed to project it's power free of consequences, but Russia shouldn't be allowed to do the same with it's interests in the middle east.
fyi, Putin always manages to blame somebody else for his failings
So do all politicians, but right now we're talking about something else. It's not a hard jump in reasoning.
