Re:or put another way.
We're upset that in the 21st century our status as an unchallenged international superpower is no longer valid.
Most have no clue what's really going on in the world... the elites are afraid of political awakening (aka global revolt). i.e. they fear you stopping voting for politicians and causing social and political change because the democratic system is a sham.
This (mass surveillance) by the NSA and abuse by law enforcement is just more part and parcel of state suppression of dissent against corporate interests. They're worried that the more people are going to wake up and corporate centers like the US and canada may be among those who also awaken. "I'm worried primarily about two kinds of abuse: political capture of our nation (a coup through intelligence services) and theft from motivated American minds working to accomplish things that could benefit us all. The overarching problem is that there is absolutely no way for the average citizen to know these abuses are not happening."

Page 21 "At the same time, the capacity to assert social and political control over the individual will vastly increase. As I have already noted, it will soon be possible to assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen and to maintain up-to-date, complete files, containing even most personal information about the health or personal behaviour of the citizen, in addition to more customary data. These files will be subject to instantaneous retrieval by the authorities."
"Moreover, the rapid pace of change will put a premium on anticipating events and planning for them. Power will gravitate into the hands of those who control the information, and can correlate it most rapidly."

Apple has corporate headquarters in Cupertino, CA, but its cash management division operates from a shell company in Nevada, which has no corporate taxes, to avoid California's 8.84% corporate tax rate. Never mind that Apple also collects $400M in R&D tax credits from California.

Re:We've redefined success!
I live in the UK, and all of the above stands for both sexes.
99% of men and women lose their homes in UK divorces? What?
Annulments can be asked for by either party, and if you back it up with enough evidence then the judge will grant it without both parties agreeing.
And how often would you say that happens?
If you father a child and you are not in a fit state of mind to do so, the other parent cannot exert their rights on you legally (and no, being drunk does not count as not being in a fit state of mind). Again, a judge will back this up if you present enough evidence.
If you try to claim that a child was a result of a drunken one night stand and hence you aren't liable for child support payments you'd be laughed out of court. The "best interests of the child" principle is almost uniformly applied throughout the western world.
"There have been cases in the US where men who donated to sperm banks" - if you use a properly registered doctor and sperm bank, you are protected by state and federal laws against child support claims. If you use a doctor or bank which is not properly registered, then you will be liable. Nothing wrong with that.
It is completely insane to claim that there is nothing wrong with that.
"men who were raped by women when they were underaged" - evidence please.
http://www.businessinsider.com...
"men who weren't even related to the child have been forced to pay child support" - evidence please.
http://www.truthrevolt.org/new...
And it's being codified into law in many places, in Ireland for example there's a new amendment to the Chikdren and Family Relationships bill which states in no uncertain terms that anyone the child considers a "father figure" is on the hook for child support.
None of your comments address the actual grisly outcomes for men in the family courts and the resultant suicidal ideation. When a father is reduced to a walking cash machine, torn away from his own children, it's no wonder that the majority of suicides, locally at least, are among men in the 30-50 age group.
I suggest you contact Fathers4Justice (you know, the guys who've been camping out on the roofs of government buildings trying to get attention) and educate yourself on these issues.
Fix the disease, not the symptom.

A fair amount of M$ patents over Linux are invalid, because Microsoft duplicated and distributed Linux internally.
That distribution kicked in the patent clause of GPL. Thus estoppling all licensing claims their patents against Linux.. I.E. They authorized duplication, distribution, and use by their Employees/Sub-contractors/etc all of which are 3rd parties to M$ corporate patent port folio.
A similar claim can be made for Nokia android phones, which Nokia android phones of which Micosoft paid 7.2 Billion for.
Any decent lawyer can easily point out these estoppel conflicts and moot a motion for a pretrial injunction.

... people don't make "free choices" to begin with, the universe works on the laws of nature. The only way to safeguard our privacy would have to have been to build it in at its foundations early in history when it was being invented but that didn't happen because the people who invented it didn't really think about it too much because of computational and other limits of the technology of the time. The freedom and open-ness that gave us the internet ended up being its achilles heel.
Just look at early things like Gopher and email, all plaintext and early HTML as well. That was pretty much just asking to be spied on and let's remember, most of the internet is in plaintext so its trivial to see what they are doing.
All systems can be hacked given infinite resources and time, and given the political climate, Schneier would do well to see what science has discovered about reasoing. Reason doesn't work the way we thought it does, your sense of reality is controlled by emotion not truth:

LEGO faced a decision whether they would keep their mediocre sales figures
Actually, LEGO faced a decision whether they would go bankrupt or do tie-ins. The BI BI linked in another comment is excellent in showing what happened to Lego and their comeback.
All the crying about crappy tie-in Lego sets is hysterical hand-wringing. Yes, those occupy the majority of retail store shelf-space, but that only reflects the reteail store's decision. The key thing is that those tie-ins have not replaced other "pure" Lego sets in Lego's catalog. It's 2015, search online: there are many online shops and alternatives. Even better, there's Brickset, an amazing database of sets, which not only will show you the wide variety of still-in-production sets but also useful tools to help you find the cheapest set for cost-per-brick.

Problem: Not telecommuting, but bad management.
It seemed to me that "Yahoo was stagnating for years" not because of employees working from home, but, overall, because of poor and insufficient management.
After Terry Semel, and before Marissa Meyer, there were 5 Yahoo CEOs who stayed less than 2 years each.
Nothing has changed, apparently. Marissa Mayer's second-in-command 'leaves with $109m' on being fired from Yahoo after just 15 months. The rapid changes in management continue, that time with a $109,000,000 loss for Yahoo. (What management arrangement allowed a poor manager, someone who was so bad he was fired, to make $7,266,666 per month?)
When Google stopped paying Mozilla Foundation $300,000,000 each year, Mozilla Foundation took money from Yahoo to sneakily "update" Firefox so that it uses "Yahoo search". Yahoo search is actually Microsoft's Bing search. A quote from Marissa:
"I'm thrilled to announce that we've entered into a five-year partnership with Mozilla to make Yahoo the default search experience on Firefox across mobile and desktop," Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said in a blog post Wednesday. "This is the most significant partnership for Yahoo in five years."
Now, somehow, the Firefox and Thunderbird user interfaces have been degraded. Firefox no longer allows making a duplicate tab from a tab; it is necessary to right-click on a web page to make a duplicate; that doesn't work well because it is necessary to find a place on the web page that is not a link.
Thunderbird and SeaMonkey composer now have the Save-As bug.
So, Microsoft paid Yahoo. Yahoo paid Mozilla Foundation to trick users into using Microsoft's Bing search engine. And now Mozilla Foundation is apparently allowing the degradation of its products. Apparently Microsoft wants Firefox and Thunderbird to be degraded that so there will be more users of Microsoft's browser and email software.
The sneaky tactic is not working: American Firefox users dump Yahoo and go back to Google.
Now: Yahoo's Incredible Shrinking Profitability In Its Core Business (Forbes, March 1, 2015). -

80% of statistics are made up
As of January 2015, the U6 rate is at 11.3%, from a high of 17.1% in 2009-10. U6 includes discouraged workers (U4 and up) and even "underemployed" workers (part-timers that would prefer to be full time), and so is probably a bit high if you're talking about actual unemployment. No, we're absolutely not at record levels of unemployment.
Moreover, no one uses "percentage of working age people not working" as an unemployment metric (unless you want to inflate the figure), because that includes people who choose not to work, such as spouses of full time workers, students, or those who retire early.
How about the baby boomers? Awesome, more wildly inaccurate statistics. It's not great news, but it's a far cry from what you indicated:
* 33 percent of Boomers have put aside less than $50,000
* Baby Boomers have saved an average of $262,541, about a third of the $805,398 they predict they’ll need at retirement.I'm not claiming things aren't tough out there, but just pulling made-up statistics out of the air isn't going to inspire confidence in your arguments.

Elite fear...
The "Boeing"-rule of thumb
When thinking about tech stocks, I like to use a "Boeing" rule as a measuring stick. The globe.com is valuing Uber at 40 Bn (1/3 of Boeing). Boeing had 90.8 Bn in revenue for 2014. Uber claims to be able to generate 10 Bn "soon" Business Insider, but conservative estimates are closer to 2 Bn. So revenue is somewhere between 1/45 and 1/9 of Boeing. I know the comparison is a bit apples (not the computer) to oranges, but Uber's overvalued IMHO. Especially considering that Uber has almost no physical assets and Uber is a privately held company with no public numbers.

Re:Accountability
Lenovo is dual-headquartered in China and North Carolina. Which branch was responsible for planting spyware in the English language version of the OS is debatable.
In China they actually do execute corrupt corporate executives and government officials (the overlap between the two job descriptions can be extensive). See the examples of Liu Han, Zeng Chengjie, Zhang Yujun and Geng Jinping, and Zheng Xiaoyu. So, yeah, heads could actually roll, if the Chinese felt that the offense was of detriment to China, but planting spyware on English-language computers probably doesn't fall into that category. In fact, someone in China is probably getting a round of free drinks.

Re:What should they do?
Nope. You can probabaly get an 80K a year job in CS with a degree someplace else. However using the 2013 survey numbers ( http://www.cmu.edu/career/sala... ) Undergard CS majors had a mean salary of $94,544 . Grads data is a bit more sporadic because of the multiple majors, but VLIS was $107,333 and Software Engineering was $94,125. Considering your starting salary out of college has a major impact on your long-term earnings there is a compelling argument to be made that it has a major impact on your long-term $ earned: http://www.businessinsider.com...

Re:What if there are two winners
The math falls apart most the time if two people could win
Not only that, but you also have to take into consideration either the lump sum payout (55%) or the inflation of taking the money over 30 years and you have to take into consideration taxes.
Let's say you are the only winner. You would get $337.9 million.
If you take the lump sum payout, you would get about $186 million.
After the federal government's 39.6% cut, you would get $112 million.
So your expected return on a $2 ticket to a single winner without deducting your state and local taxes is about $0.64 per dollar invested. In order to make it worth your while, you should not play the lottery until it hits $527 million, assuming a single winner.
Now let's say two people win the lottery. That means you get about 169 million.
Let's say you take the lump sum payout. That would be close to 93 million. With the governments 39.6% cut, that leaves you with 56 million. So your expected return on a $2 ticket if two people wins is $0.32 per dollar invested. In order to make it worth your while, you should not play the lottery until it hits over $1.05 billion dollars.
If I really invested a lot of effort, I could come up with the expected number of people to win based on the number of people playing and come up with an overall expected return per dollar invested. Business Insider has done the math and determined that as the value of the jackpot goes up, the number of players goes up polynomially, so the chance of a split jackpot goes up. They determined that if you take the annuity, that the expected value reaches $1 per dollar at $348 million, however, they did not consider inflation or taxes. If you take into consideration those two factors, the polynomial input of players and likelihood of splits would likely cause an approach to a maximum Expected Return per dollar, which is probably somewhere in the area of $0.55 - $0.60 cents. -
Re:This is (sort of) good news for Americans
I don't think Putin's an asshole
I think thousands of wounded/displaced Ukrainians would disagree, and the dead ones if they could talk. Plus the families of the people on the downed airliner. -
Would I blow that much anyway?
I'm one whose behavoir aligns pretty well with the article. I start playing the lotto when the jackpot gets north of $150 million. Statistically and historically it's wasted money, but I can blow $10 here or there without much consequence. If I saved and invested all the money I wasted on powerball, I'd have maybe $1,000-2,000- not a life changing amount of money for me.
As I type this, a thought occurs to me- maybe I should double my lotto expenditures- every time I buy lotto tickets I deposit the same amount of money into a mutual fund of some sort- see where I'm at in another 10 years.
Anyway, the interesting thing about lotto economics is not middle class and higher people who use modest discretionary funds for a shot at the big jackpot. It's that lotto sales are highest in the lowest income communities- people with less money to waste, for whom $10 is a more significant part of their paycheck. The lotteries are funded largely by people with the least money to spare.
Now it's likely that in the absence of state driven gambling, illegal gambling would arise (or grow bigger), possibly with even worse consequences for the least well off among us. That's a significant factor in the moral case for or against state-sanctioned lotteries. There are some states without lottos- Hawaii, Alaska, Utah, Mississippi and Alabama- so there ought to be some information about this factor. A quick google search yields some leads, which I do not currently have the time to digest. -

Or our calorie measurement methods need updating
You may find this article informative.
Calorie measurements of food are just estimates, the particulars vary. The gut bacteria of fat people absorb more of the available energy than that of skinny people, but our measurements of the calories in food aren't necessarily the max amount that could be absorbed.
To put it simply, fat people get more calories from the same food than skinny people, regardless of how many calories the label says the food has.
