Re:stylish not cool
Yes, but Haliburton cases are also good for storing One Million Dollars (in Dr. Evil voice) in Benjamins. How many dorky laptop cases would look good with a dark suit and sunglasses, handcuffed to your wrist? When I bring my laptop out, the case had better make a nice 'prrrrrup' sound, and make people think I'm going to pull out a million dollars, a brick of coke, or a pair of Uzis.
Seriously, I wonder if they're designed to hold just the right amount of bills for drug deals and arms sales. -
Re:OkWow, cubicledrone. This is a big deal to you.
I have fake cards at every store I shop at. I don't care if I lose them or give them away, since I can get a new one every time. Hopefully they lose a bit of money every time I get a new card, they never get any "real" info out of me, and their database of customer habits is filling up with "Sham Fraud 123 Fake st Springfield ST 12345"
Feel free to use this information when you get a card, with my compliments.
Also there are people like this who encourage you to print out their barcode and paste it on your club card.
Stop freaking out, and start sticking it to the man at his own game!
You act like they want your SSID, original birth certificate, and mother's maiden name. But if you ask calmly, they'll hand you a card with an application you don't have to fill out right away EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Re:They don't know what .NET is
(Side note: I love the ad for MS VisualStudio 2005 that
/. bundled with the article summary for me!)
I'm skeptical that this isn't just another case of those Earn Tounsands each week of dollars from your own home scams. -
Re:A little sensationalist
It's called a bunch of whiny faggoty cunts bitching like whiny faggoty cunts.
And of course when I say faggoty I mean the wads of meat. http://www.cockeyed.com/naughty/faggots-01.jpg -
Cost?
The article says that attitude is the major barrier, but I still think it's cost right now. This page is obviously out of date (although the girl is still cute!), but I think it still makes the point that gasoline is still a pretty cheap liquid by comparison. Oil is around $1.20 per gallon right now. I'd be lucky if I could find a cup of coffee for that price! Ethanol is still expensive and will be until the demand is high enough to start using it. Sure, mass-production plants have yet to be built... but those things aren't cheap, either. I feel like (no basis in fact!) the price of oil/gasoline is going to have to increase much, much further for ethanol to be a realistic alternative. Just my 2 cents.

Re:lol no this is not a virus
if everyone used proper spelling and grammer, computer comprehension (and filtering) would be able to improve.
QED. It may interest you to know how many ways there are to spell Viagra...

Re:Wegmans v. General Motors
Unfortunately, it seems most chains are requiring these cards these days. And by require, I mean you get the increased prices if you don't use them. QFC is 1/4 the distance of any other grocery store from my house, and very easy to bike to, but if I ever start using Safeway, I'll be sure to use someone else's club card.
As for the grandparent, I don't consider huge store size a redeeming factor. -
Re:Google on the cheap
Given that there are 600,426,974,379,824,381,952 ways to spell Viagra, that's probably a little unrealistic.

Patents are also for *future* protectionPatents are not the same thing as a full proof of operability. Basically, a patent is intended to cover current capability and any future expansion of a given technology. This is why there are so many patents for things that don't exist now, but might in the future if a particular technology is advanced/developed. It is interesting to me that the public at large assumes that if a technology is patented that it automatically means it is scientifically proven. Herbal supplements that might claim to do any number of things might also be patented, but that just means the process or composition is patented, not that the claimed benefit is proven.
In short, while Sony may have patented the technology, it will be a long time before we have UT2k4 on a neural link.

Ultimate shopper, ultimate crime?
I'd hate to see what my Safeway shopping card would get me arrested for.

Re:Card Sharing @ Safeway
I know there was a guy who had a project going to get a bunch of people to use his card.
You're thinking of Rob Cockerham. I guess it's amazing he hasn't been arrested for something yet... -

Re:Read this carefully
Changing the bar code to a single number everyone uses is way better and much simpler.
Uh, it's been done already. -
Re:Read this carefully
Something like this has been done by Rob Cockerham of Cockeyed.com. Rob, by the way, is the funniest person on the internet. Bar Strongbad, of course.

A site like these? Rob's Giant BonusCard Swap Meet or The Ultimate Shopper (Safeway)

no, these people are why spyware existsIt's people like those interviewed for the article that are the reason spyware and adware exist. People who are CLUELESS
... Just like Nigerian scams, enlarge your penis spam, etc.No, spyware and spam exist because some stupid people think they can make money that way or that a good way to harass their competition is to make their competition's users miserable. In short, it's because some people are stupid, greedy and malicious. The ultimate losers are those who waste their time and effort trying to get rich quick. The spammer who lives in a nice house is the exception that proves the rule that most make no money, especially when the exception goes to jail for some other fraud. It's more like Amway or work from home than anything else.

holy jesus, no one mentioned cockeyed.com yet!
seriously, it's run by Rob Cockerham who is my fookin hero. He's hardcore DIY, but not really on the tech side but more on installations for entertaining social engineering (read: pranks).
Also, check his killer Halloween costumes, which are good enough to win at the ILM party!

Become the Ultimate Safeway Shopper!
There is a guy that gives out stickers with copies of the UPC on his Safeway Club Card, which means that there are hundreds (thousands?) of people crediting their purchases to his account.
I think he is a slashdotter and that's how I found his webpage. I don't remember. I might be able to talk, but toasters don't have a whole lot of memory. I should join in and buy lots of embarrassing items. I wonder what his Terrorism Quotient is. -
Re:A use for AOL CD's

or you could
build yourself a paparazzi costume with those disposable cameras (there's still the potential to get zapped though)

Re:Outsourced?
I remember seeing signs stapled to telephone poles around here that read, "Work at home! $3000/month!"
Turns out you were supposed to run spamming software for a guy.
Actually, those are for herbalife. Check out the special report from cockeyed.com. -
Re:loyalty cards
The folks at Cockeyed.com have an interesting project going on with these loyalty cards.
-
Re:There is / was such a thing in the UK.Don't know about the UK, but there are at least two similar projects in the US:
The Ultimate Shopper for Safeway, and Rob's Giant BonusCard Swap Meet for Giant.
On a related hote, I just found a website for CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering), which has much useful information.

Help Spam Safeway Clubcards!!!
Here is a culture jamming prank that has been going on in Sacramento for some time:
http://www.cockeyed.com/pranks/safeway/ultimate_sh opper.html
Basically, it gives instructions for how to create a Safeway barcode. Hundreds of people use this same number when shopping, getting all the discounts, but completely obscuring their own tracks.
Please join!
-
"Loyalty" cards
Here's one solution.
-
Re:loyalty cards
Or you can always use Rob's card. He doesn't mind.
-
Re:As long as they don't stop...
They yanked an auction of Rob Cockerham's because the window screen he was selling as a joke looked a little bit too much like a flat screen TV and some kid fell for it. He was pretty clear about what he was really selling, too.
-
Re:Wow, they requested this?
I could see spam turning mostly into something like the herbal life scam where they trick people to pay money down, and then they just do it to try to make back the initial investment.
-
Check out your local Goodwill storeYou want to buy your knife back? It might end up in the local goodwill store.

Re:Just pay with cashthay want you to carry and use a card that identifies you to the system even if you do pay cash. Of course, you can not cary a card,
Or just download, print and apply the the Ultimate Shopper's number and get your sale prices whilst still donning your tin foil apparel.

Re:hrm, I disagree.
The job sites kept sending me nothing but "work at home" jobs (probably stuffing envelopes or telemarketing or something else distasteful.)
If it was just distasteful work that wouldn't be so bad. But if you get an "job offer" that refuses to clairify the nature of the work and is work at home, you can pretty much assume that it's a scam. Federal Trade Commission's warning on Work-at-Home schemes. Cockeyed.com investigated the Work-at-Home signs that often litter neighborhoods.
