Re:Why blame everything else?
...everybody tries to blame everything on new technology going from cancer to depression, blamed on cell phones to video games. Yet, they don't bother looking or trying to understand the deeper reasons...
Amen to that. Check out this article where a woman passes off her psychosomatic illness as an allergy to technology. -

For most people talking on a mobile phone, cooking dinner in the microwave or driving in a car is simply part of modern living in 21st century Britain.
But completing any such tasks is impossible for Debbie Bird - because she is allergic to modern technology.
P.S. That is one shoddy looking woman -

Re:Not everyone.
In the city, a school will have 8-10 busses with 1 late for activities. For economic reasons, all of the busses are totally full in the case of elementary students. A route is about 40 minutes and then the bus is back at the school.
So to run 30 of them for 40 minutes and then send the drivers home for the rest of the day would be a bit silly, so they run 8 of them with 4 trips each to handle different schools.
Then there is always the practical matter of having the first grade students sitting with the 11th grade students. Since family is a pretty much absent concept to most western families, and "thinkofthechildren" is the order of the day, the 7 year olds would be "horribly traumatized" by the "inappropriate" conversations and actions from the older kids.
After all, if a gradeschool kid hears someone say the word "gay" he will be scarred for life. We all know that.
Economic reasons stemming from social decay? or something.

Re:Oh nooo!!!
Here are some facts about global warming. Some of which you hear and don't hear from the main stream media:
1.) Apparently, the Earth magnetic field has decreased by 10% in the last 150 years (source: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/earth_magnet ic_031212.html). I'm an electrical engineer and during my studies in particle physics, I learned that a particles velocity can be affected by magnetic fields. I believe it's possible that more of the Sun's radiation is penetrating the Earth's magnetosphere ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth's_magnetic_fiel d ) due to it being weaker. If more radiation hits the Earth, shouldn't that also increase the overall temperature of the Earth and can global warming be attributed to this?
2.) Jupitor is experiencing the same climate change that Earth is. (source: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/060504_red_j r.html [space.com])
3.) Mars is experiencing the same climate change that Earth is. (source: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/ mars_snow_011206-1.html and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/new s/news.html?in_article_id=410901&in_page_id=1770)
How can you explain the recent same climate changes on different planets? I doubt it's all those cars being driven there.
4.) The United Nations found that there is more Methane produced from livestock, which raises global temperature greater than CO2 by a factor of approx. 20, than any human caused CO2 combined (source: http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/news/2006/1000448/i ndex.html)
Is it possible that the warmer temperatures that Earth is experiencing are caused by cyclical natural phenomena? What about glaciers in Greenland that have been shrinking for 100 years (source: http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/08/21/060821191 826.o0mynclv.html [breitbart.com])? Also, how do you explain huge ice ages on Earth? Were these caused by huge carbon emissions or was it a small natural climate cycle that just happens? Were those climate changes, which are no doubt more extreme than what's going on now, caused by the combustion engine? I don't have answers and everyone seems to have an opinion including a Nobel laureate who says the answer is more pollution (source: http://reports.discoverychannel.ca/servlet/an/disc overy/1/20061117/discovery_pollutionsolution_06111 7/20061117?hub=DiscoveryReport)
One last thing. Lets say we all buy into the fact that we're causing the climate change through CO2. Regardless of what actions we (America) take, China will still produce more CO2 than anyone because they want to get rich. There's no stopping it folks. -

Here are some facts about global warming. Some of which you hear and don't hear from the main stream media:
1.) The world appears to be getting warmer with many computer models showing an increase in global temperature.
2.) Tying a trend to warmer temperatures based on older data from the early 1900's is suspect at best. Good, reliable, accurate scientific equipment that measures the temperature wasn't readily available until recently (late 1900's).

The Real Work: Warp DriveInstead of wasting millions of dollars on a 20th-century fuel tank, NASA should be investing most of its effort in warp drive. Burkhard Heim has already developed the necessary theory. Now, NASA should turn it into practical reality.
"Burkhard Heim" is German for "Zephram Cochrane".

Re:Not conclusive
Me? I'm just listening to my gut - that mysterious place where common sense springs from - and my gut tells me that genetically altered things are not good eats.
Since you are typing on a computer with Internet access, I assume you live in an area where you are free to eat whatever you want. Unfortunately, not everyone has that luxury. There are places in the world where the best meal a family can hope for is a spoon full of rice that Sally Struthers provided. Granted, it's something to eat, but it has little nutritional value other than the carbohydrates. Now let's say you can genetically modify this rice to contain vitamins (such as "Golden rice") and even human breast-milk protein. Now, this bit of rice can be a nutritionally complete meal that could possibly be grown in these local areas to feed starving populations.
Unfortunately, in the meantime, groups like Greenpeace have convinced the governments of starving nations to reject GM foods and allow their populations to starve. Yes, that is correct. Greenpeace would rather let men, women and children starve to death than have them eat GM foods. And people wonder why I think that Greenpeace is more concerned with their own political agendas than the welfare of the people they claim to be trying to help. -

My survey? Biased methods? That I created? All those articles aren't quoting me you know! I wasn't even alive for the 1958 study!
"Btw something which has 'exceptions' doesn't make 'fact' status"
Did I say 'fact' or did I say 'trend'? (problems with vocabulary recall?) I think you'll find it was the latter (and here's the link to my post if you're in doubt)... although, it is a fact that there is a trend, as the numerous research projects have shown. The fact that there are exceptions is what makes it a trend, not a law. -
Things are about to get a lot worse
Breaking news today, Britons will be denied a passport if they don't submit to the world's most intrusive mass-surveillance system
People who refuse to give up their bank records, tax records & details of any benefits they've claimed and the records of their car movements for the last year, or refuse to submit to an interrogation on whether they are the same person that this mountain of data belongs to will be denied passports from March 26th.
The Blair Govt has already admitted that this and other data will be cross-linked so that the Home Office and other officials can spy on the everyday lives of innocent Britons.
Britons were already the most spied upon nation in Western Europe. Data-mining through this unprecedented level of mass-surveillance allows any future British govt to leapfrog even countries like China and North Korea.

Vunerability
Summary: UK Passports vulnerable to brute force attack
CVE: None
Date: Mar 07 2007 10:25PM
Credit: Adam Laurie is credited with discovering this issue
Vulnerable: UK Passport >= 2006
Not vulnerable: UK Passport < 2006
Lack of security checking or strong passwords allows an attacker to gain access
to personal details stored on the passport by launching a brute force or
dictionary attack. An attacker would need access to a region of a few
centimeters around the passport, but would not need to the passport itself.

Re:democracy in action
Simple, really. As a poster noted earlier, No2ID pointed out that this was a great way to introduce "fire and forget" activism. No need to go picketing in crap British weather, no need for civil disobedience, no need to leave the comfort of your armchair
... one click and, hey, you've protested, cup of tea, please.I disagree that ignoring the ID-Card petition "is hardly a big deal". Ignoring a petition with 27,000 signatures or 1.5 million is a symptom of the same problem, and it is a huge deal: the UK government does not like the idea of democracy.
The reaction by a senior UK government minister to the idea that citizens can set up their own polls is indicative of their utter contempt for the notion that citizens should be able to so easily and publicly have their say: it was "unbelievable", he said, that someone in the government could have possibly come up with the idea, concluding that "The person who came up with this idea must be a prat." The Transport select committee chairman was equally dismissive, and said: "I think it (the online petition) was daft. I don't know what under-16 year-old employment scheme they have got in Number 10, but they should revise it. If you entirely represent the thing in a negative way of course people are going to say 'I don't want to do that'."
Ever since, it's been quite clear that any such petitions will be ignored, and I rather suspect that the site will no longer allow the public to create petitions in the future. The focus by the government in dealing with these petitions has been on mitigating what is seen as a PR disaster rather than a victory for democratic participation, so it's time to engineer some consent. They've made quite clear that they fully intend to go ahead with trial runs of the road tolls, and this letter about Blair arguing for ID-Cards illustrates, yet again, that the public need to be managed.
If there was ever a clearer example of just how much politicians don't like citizens meddling in their affairs, this is it.

Point 3
Regarding your third point, yes, a lot of data is out there. Collecting it is part of a two-step political strategy. Figure that a civil libertarian doesn't want their government monitoring and analyzing their every move for suspicious behavior. So, a well-meaning person who thinks such a system is a good idea will say the following. One: "We're implementing a bunch of specific data-gathering systems for a variety of mostly-harmless purposes. Don't be paranoid; we'd never hook them up into a massive all-seeing database to analyze your every move, and there are plenty of safeguards on the data." Two: "We're merging existing databases and applying powerful new data-mining tools to them, but how can you complain? You already agreed that we could collect this data, and we're doing it to fight drugs/porn/terrorism. Besides, we'd never add a bunch of new systems to collect yet more data." Repeat.
In related news, Blair has called for a universal database of the DNA of British subjects and backed a bill against speech that "stirs up religious hatred." The UK has begun using cameras that bark orders at people. Then there's the plan to monitor all vehicle movements in the UK, the topic of petition #1 on the UK petition site. -
Re:Uhhh....
America is probably not a good example to use. Estimates of autism have shot up in recent years, it is now classed as the second-worst contry in the Western world for children, education standards have fallen, creationists have become a major political force, obesity is sky-high and rising, something caused Britney Spears' hair to fall out, and 90% of all recent US news stories on legal and/or political issues can be best explained by some form of brain damage.I don't know where you're from, but let's pick another Western nation - oh, say, Britain - and see if they have any of these problems, shall we?
Edu cation, obesity, autism, and creationism. Hmm. (And these were just top picks from Google searches.) Maybe America's problems are just more widely known than those of other nations?

Re:Climatologists?
Here are some facts about global warming. Some of which you hear and don't hear from the main stream media:
1.) The world appears to be getting warmer with many computer models showing an increase in global temperature.
2.) Tying a trend to warmer temperatures based on older data from the early 1900's is suspect at best. Good, reliable, accurate scientific equipment that measures the temperature wasn't readily available until recently (late 1900's).
3.) Apparently, the Earth magnetic field has decreased by 10% in the last 150 years (source: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/earth_magnet ic_031212.html). I'm an electrical engineer and during my studies in particle physics, I learned that a particles velocity can be affected by magnetic fields. I believe it's possible that more of the Sun's radiation is penetrating the Earth's magnetosphere ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetosphere ) due to it being weaker. If more radiation hits the Earth, shouldn't that also increase the overall temperature of the Earth and can global warming be attributed to this?

Re:Iceland
First of all
.. In my neck of the woods, we pay 28 cents/KwH (1,6066 DKR) .. your 50 year ROI becomes a measly 8 years .. still longer than most people live in one place, but a battery of sun panels on the roof probably will up the value of a house (I wouldn't mind paying extra).
I can see why you disagree with my coment, I should have included the calculation before ..
There are some very interesting small turbines comming out that have a quite low ROI even compared with the price you pay..
Hydro and geothermal wasn't what I was refering to, but more the things you can do in your own home, to get around the electricity bill.
This guy is using a waterwheel .. normally I would consider hydro a huge (government type) investment, but hey .. you got to use what is at hand..
Which brings us to current events in Spain .. other countries in Europe has similar goals.
The rules are changing changing faster in Europe than in the States, at the moment.
(Higher prices => other thought patterns) -
Re:Well that's shweet and all
But will you like knowing that you're on camera several hundred times a day (as is supposedly true for Englishmen today), monitored not just by a bored policeman but by software designed to identify people and suspicious behavior (eg. this story)? Considering the existing cameras with microphones, will you shiver when the machines call you by name and ask what you're doing? "Move along, citizen."
If we're to be monitored, we should be pushing to make sure that we have access, ourselves, to the surveillance network and that we're not shut out by laws "protecting privacy" from everyone but the government. This is the argument developed in Brin's The Transparent Society. -

Birds fall from sky. . .Another 'theory' is that as the polar ice melts, billions of tonnes of methane are released into the atmosphere.
I don't know it it's related, but perhaps that's why the birds are falling from the sky.
Another is not even a theory; it's that as the world heats up, more precipitation falls over the poles, which would explain the substantially thicker ice noted by satellites. Nobody seems to be talking about this little item.
The way it works is that things heat up, the ice melts fast around the edge and the snow falls at the poles making for more ice. --Along with all the methane released, (which speeds up the process), we have all this fresh water entering the oceans which changes the salinity levels in key spots. --Salinity plays a large role in how the Gulf Stream works, particularly at the point the hot water sinks when it reaches the end of its run in the North to begin its return trip back into the tropics. A big conveyor belt. However, as the water gets less salty, with lots of fresh water dumping into the ocean at the end of the Gulf Stream's run where the icebergs live, then the theory states that the hot water might stop sinking and that the world's heat conveyor would sputter and get all weird.
And what does 'weird' mean? I don't know exactly; I don't think anybody does, but I pause when I consider those endless fields of flash frozen mastodon in the Alaskan North. --And that flash frozen mastodon with undigested buttercups still in its mouth.
Still, nobody can predict the weather. I'm remain a bit more fascinated by all these rocks falling from the sky. Interesting times, no doubt!
It has been said that Bush and the people directing him are simply trying to prepare the world for disaster by putting into place the conditioning and systems required to manage billions of starving people. Harvest time is coming.

Not 60% more, actually 20%.
Check the article again, "The judges chose the photo taken during the fertile phases 60 per cent of the time."
The judges picked the fertile phase photo 60% of the time, when random chance would suggest 50%. This is an 20% more than random chance would predict. Significant, but not quite as amazing as a 60% difference that the summary erroneously suggests.

Re:Dangerous
Refusing to start the car is one thing, and perfectly acceptable, but taking control away from the driver is a big no no under any circumstance.
I'd agree that refusal to start the car is probably a good idea - possible false positives by the drunk idiot in shotgun throwing up notwithstanding. There are however several drivers I know (and unfortunately been driven by) who need control taken away from them when sober to begin with. Theres a lot of people out there who ought not be be given driving licenses. Pretty much every time I'm on the interstate I see some car crash - read about it the next day and chances are are its DUI. I'm fine with control being taken away because it seems we are getting much better at cars that can drive themselves.

Also there are tons of things you could do if you weren't actually driving the car and it would be brilliant for long road trips. -

I guess the question is "who controls the cameras?" Is the footage made available to the public? Or, if the cops start beating the shit out of some Critical Mass bicyclists do the cameras suddenly all go on the fritz?
I think that you mean: "if the cops shoot some Brazilian electrician in the head eight time in the London subway while he is on his way to work, then lie about virtually ever aspect of the shooting, do the cameras suddenly all go on the fritz?"
The answer is: yes.

Re:No change in sea level.
I've been following global warming for a long time now doing a lot research on the side for the last couple of years. Here are some facts about global warming. Some of which you hear and don't hear from the main stream media: 1.) The world appears to be getting warmer with many computer models showing an increase in global temperature.
The word you're looking for here is "thermometers".
No, obviously not. The temperature was falling throughout those 150 years and has only started rising recently. The only correlated factor is CO2.
4.) Jupitor is experiencing the same climate change that Earth is. (source: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/060504_red_j r.html [space.com])
5.) Mars is experiencing the same climate change that Earth is. (source: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/ mars_snow_011206-1.html and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/new s/news.html?in_article_id=410901&in_page_id=1770)
Complete crap. We have absolutely no idea what the temperature history of the other planets is and so we have no way of drawing any conclusions from any changes we see.
6.) The United Nations found that there is more Methane produced from livestock, which raises global temperature greater than CO2 by a factor of approx. 20, than any human caused CO2 combined (source: http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/news/2006/1000448/i ndex.html)
The article you linked to says that CH4 only amounts to 18% of CO2-equivalent emissions. Since the lifetime of CH4 is only 12 years, the cumulative effect is smaller still.
How can you explain the recent same climate changes on different planets? I doubt it's all those cars being driven there.
See above. However, since temperatures on Earth have only started rising recently, and we've been monitoring the Sun's output longer than that, we can be sure the reason isn't a change in the Sun.
Lots More Pictures
This has also been picked up by the major media.
On a side note, the HiRISE team is now posting new large images on the HiRISE Website every week on Wednesday. (A file size and format warning is needed. The full super high resolution photo of the Opportunity landing site is 677 MBytes in JP2 format)
Of course, there are some pics that I wouldn't mind a little more investigation on. I happen to be interested in something I call Gulliver's Golf Ball, something that looks like a perfect sphere, roughly 200 meters across. -

Re:If we aren't careful, this will happen here too
Hopefully Americans will recognize this before we merrily join the UK and strap video cameras to every public park, building, and employee.
Oh, we'd never go that far. We'll just put up cameras for traffic enforcement. And law enforcement. And then link them up. And upgrade the software to do face/gait recognition and look for "suspicious behavior." And require private cameras at bars, and link those to the police. Then for good measure have the cameras bark orders at people. By then we'll have found other creative uses for the technology, and implement that by little steps.
I just got through writing a science-fiction story combining all of the above with a looming uber-AI trying to prevent crime. Somewhat farfetched and paranoid, but scary, and except for the AI part we do seem to be building that sort of surveillance society, one piece at a time. I shudder to think of the UK's "anti-social behavio(u)r" rules being used to watch people wherever they go and even yell at them through the one-way glass. -
Re:Scot t Adams Disses Atheists' Common-Sense
But....but....but.....that's unpossible! Haven't you heard? Islam is a religion of peace, so surely you must be thinking of some troublemaking Jews masquerading as Muslims. And if those Muslim brothers in your town are forcing their women to cover themselves, you must realize that it's done out of respect for the women--just like a farmer respects his livestock. And for future reference, if they happen to rape any infidel women in your town, just remember: it's because they're practically begging for it by parading themselves around like uncovered meat, not because the Muslim brothers are misogynistic sickos who want to follow in the footsteps of a pedophile prophet.

Re:Are these like Slashvertisments?
BBC has about as much journalistic integrity as Entertainment Tonight, they just have better sounding accents.
Not to be too harsh but it just really gets me when people try to point to the BBC as a beacon of truth when by their own admission they pander to about every special interest group out there. They've also been fighting a freedom of information act request for the release of their own internal review of their Middle East coverage; most suspect because it implies that they have been highly biased against Israel.
It's never good to rely on one new source for your information. -

So are you saying those inmates are innocent ? Just because there is a difference, there necessarily is racism involved ? Maybe it simply is true what every statistic keeps repeating : immigrants commit many more crimes than natives. 20 or 30 times more. This is statistic is not isolated to america. Les than 30% of people in the belgian prisons are belgians. 4% of muslims in the UK perpetrate 72% of reported antisemitic attacks.
islam teaches muslims to kill infidel males, and rape infidel females. The statistic on rapes in brussels, unfortunately, confirms this is exactly what's happening. There are maybe 5% muslims, but they do nearly 60% of rapes. That's racism right there for you. Also note that in many muslim countries, it is either explicitly or de-facto legal to do so.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/new s/news.html?in_article_id=412697&in_page_id=1770
Or look at the case of ait oud. He's a muslim who raped and killed 2 children. Then he dumped them in the sewer. Traces of his jacket and his hair were found on the victim, including the areas where they really, REALLY shouldn't have been found. His entire mosque agrees : he didn't do it, and even if he did do it, he did nothing wrong, and he's being accused because of racism. The papers reported this small detail once, and now they shut up about any of his relatives or other muslims. Coincidence ?

And ... why don't you check how blacks are treated in the rest of the world. Why don't you check how muslims treat blacks ? It's been in the news so much lately in sudan. Also note that muslims have no word for "a black person" only one single word denotes blacks in the muslim word. You know which one ? "slave".
But as always ... check your facts. -
