Because Digg said so...
I think it's because of this Digg "article": Microsoft Buys Out Opera that many people think it's true
-
Another Example
This was already on digg several hours ago. Why doesn't Taco just write some code to steal all of his stories from digg? I bet Slashdot would be much more up to speed with the rest of the Internets if he did.

Re:Is this real or an advertisement?
"Also, who submitted this thing? Zonk himself? "
He's gotta pay for that free 360...
Guess even after that barrage of 360 marketing stories over the past couple of months he still has a balance due.
No wonder people are fleeing this dump for http://www.digg.com/ -
Re:*Sigh*Best voting we can do is with our feet - by visiting digg.com.

Come on guys
At least change the title when posting something from digg. We gotta keep up our Digg vs. Dot score.
-
Re:You're Making Us Look Like Chumps!!!!
Of course, this was duped on Digg too. But their story rating system took it off the front page quickly.

Re:On the four day of Christmas...
Looks like someone got it from the Digg dupe from around 7:30AM CT.

Re:Ugh.

Geez. Slashdot just getting on this one?
This has been available for several days now. I think the day has come. Slashdot is being beaten by the little site that could: digg.com.
-
Re:Just do it the easy way
Idiot, Slashdot is better than copying Cory Jardin or Xeni Doctorow!
Slashdot's stories are duped from a quality source, Digg.
Thanks for playing. -
Re:Digg.com vs. Slashdot?
"We're all busy reading and posting over on http://www.digg.com/"
You mean, busy browsing through all the crap to find an interesting story which has maybe two diggs and a couple of insightful comments such as "+digg"? -

Digg.com vs. Slashdot?
This specific story made me realize something on digg vs. shashdot comparisons. Usually digg.com is a good source for early news, something that Slashdot ceased to be some time ago. I go more frequently to digg.com these days to get the latest cool news.
As an example, I saw this story a few days ago on digg.com (eight days ago, to be more exact).
http://www.digg.com/technology/Nano-armor_-_Protec ting_the_soldiers_of_tomorrow
But here is the interesting fact: the story barely got any diggs, even though I found it out as a very interesting story. But here on Slashdot, the story makes the first page, thankfully... So interesting stories have better changes to show up on Slashdot after all! -
Re:FLAC> I never really understood what the big deal was when everyone was downloading 128k MP3's. How could media companies have ever felt threatened by that noise?
Because most people aren't pretentious audiophiles, and are quite happy to listen to 128kbps MP3s through the crappy speakers that came with their Gateway box.
Cool! I've always wanted to be a pretentious audiophile! This is a great day! I just wish I had the gear to go along with such an ostentatious title. [sigh]
The treble washout at 128kbps is often times just too much. Have you ever tried to make an audio CD from 128k MP3s? It will generally turn out to be hideous. That's not always the case. I made one from the Brad Sucks: I Don't Know What I'm Doing album and it rocks! Guess I'm not as picky as you would imply--though others would be, for sure. Still you don't have to have a golden ear to be disturbed with lower bitrate MP3s, even on crappy Gateway speakers...
Listening to low quality MP3s can be kind of comparable to the Uncanny Valley effect some people experience when they see photorealistic CG images of humans. They can look really cool but still creep you out at the same time...

Better Page Rendering
I hope this leads to some new technology that other companies will use to develop a better web browser for PDA's. I've yet to come across one that displays pages the way they are supposed to look, unless specifically rewritten for these devices. http://www.aximsite.com/ look tremendous on a small screen, but one like http://www.digg.com/ looks horrible. Large amounts of white space, words not lining up, etc. Im guessing it may have something to do with the css that digg and many other sites are now using.

Web 2.0
Let's face it - in the Web 2.0 world, one of the most important things is user interaction. Sure, Yahoo is known all around the blogosphere as a good netizen - but does this mean they are commited to the del.icio.us philosophy? Web 2.0 is all about the user. del.icio.us, and many other popular sites such as http://www.kuro5hin.org/ and http://www.digg.com/ function as kind of a "podcast for news" allowing users access to many new news sites posted by the blogees themselves. However, one only sees material the major news services have posted on Yahoo News. By this hostile takeover of del.icio.us, Yahoo becomes able to more leverage the blogosphere and its many netizens.

The End Of Slashdot
Slashdot: The 3 Billion Dollar Typo
Digg: $225 million dollar typo
It's over, Slashdot. You're slow, inaccurate, outdated and irrelevant. Digg is the future. -

FYI - Reading the news on Digg would have gotten you the correct info. Slashdot is for funny comments, not for precise data.

Copy, paste, submit: The slashdot way.
OT: What's the point of even reading
/. anymore, if all they do is Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V Digg? Every time a new article makes it to the top of the Digg pile, Slashdot will post the same article 1 to 12 hours later? Just use Digg, maybe that'll help them find fresh stories. -
Safari/GoDaddy(?) bug...?
I tried checking out the charity site and got a blank page in Safari.
Perhaps the charity is using a redirect from GoDaddy?
It seems to suffer all the symptoms (loads in FireFox or IE but not Safari or Opera, but if you open it in FF or IE and then try it in Safari or Opera it will load...?). Curious and potentially unfortunate
Hopefully Gabe and company will become aware of this as Safari users that don't know of this "bug" (or "change" or whatever it is) may be discouraged to find the site doesn't load. -
I found the digg article they plaugerized...

Oh no
I just made a list of things, and Slashdot will be making ad money from the list of other people's software being here:

Someone sue Slashdot! Quickly now! -
Slashdot is True Tabloid for posting this
Slashdot readers have shown their intelligence by rejecting this "True AI" claim. But Slashdot could have used the space to report on interesting developments that are actually happening. This is one reason I think digg.com will gain in popularity at the expense of Slashdot.

Digg is actually better. Slashdot is old and ugly. Its content is decided by editors, the layout looks like it was made in windows95's heyday and its a dinosaur. Digg on the other hand is new and "growing", they use a flashier, better looking layout, yet the site is still simpler then Slashdot. The content is decided by the submitters and you can get that content via audio and video podcasts.
I never could stand slashdot. The layout and just overall feel of that site was/is bad.
I don't like slashdot's layout. It's ugly and cluttered. The colors make me wanna puke.
Slashdot users agree that Digg.com's entries are a lot more current that the ones posted at Slashdot.
99% of slashdot users have self-diagnosed themselves as suffering from Asperger's Syndrome. Most slashdot users consider themselves "smart" when in fact they are simply of average intelligence, but have more free time and a higher sense of ego. This can be seen in the forums where spelling and usage errors are prevalent in condescending, arrogant rants, identified by containing the phrase "people are stupid" at some point in the post.
I prefer Digg for my tech news and I've found some really nice sites that way.
I prefer Digg. I used to check
/. but I didn't like it as muchI like Digg better anyway, much more and more interesting news.
What I can't stand, even less that the site and the proseltyzing editors, are Slashdot's users- overweight, effeminate cubicle shit. At least I don't have to wear a goatee and suck linux dick to participate on Digg I cant stand Slashdot, I will only Read it when its linked from somewhere else

If you're going to just copy diggs...
You should at least change the title:

Unless of course PlayfullyClever is also known as briarpatch.
I'm not going to complain about stories constantly getting posted here after it was on digg days/hours ago, but seeing the exact same titles now is getting a bit ridiculous. -

Does
/. realize just how big this has gotten? i know its very much flamebait / faux par to even mention Digg - but its gone truly Viral, very nearly 6,000 digg's (thats voted for - in non dig-speak) as well as 814 comments, its now the #1 article of the year on digg. Also the site in question (www.PriceRitePhoto.com) as well as 2 other sites that seem to be owned by the same company - TheCameraMall.com and EmpirePhoto.com - are either down or incredibly slow, most likely due to dig users either using good 'ole VGET or this new fangled "Spam Vampire" thing or even just opera users checking the 'reload every 15 seconds' option. ;) I for one *Really* wanna see a copy of there monthly bandwidth bill! If you have a medical condition that prevests you from comfortabley viewing URL's that contain the word "digg", look away now... http://www.digg.com/deals/Abusive_New_York_Camera_ Store_Threatens_Blogger Also - these are a MUST LISTEN !!! http://danny.st/tmp/pricerite.mp3 http://danny.st/tmp/pricerite2.mp3 Apart from that, all I have to say is: PWNED!!! This story hit digg early yesterday. Then it hit Metafilter a few hours later. Looks like
/. is a liitle slow on the uptake. -
Re:What Resellerratings.com has to say about them
Interestingly enough, their resellerrating score was 5.5 yesterday. Which is still pretty bad, but it shows that a single story (when linked at the right places) can have a pretty big impact on your online ratings.
Considering this change was established by votes from people who never actually delt with this company themselves, it shows how easily online ratings can be abused, for better (fake positive ratings to make yourself seem good - which it looks like they did at epinions) or worse (fake negative ratings for a competitor?).
Worse than that, when this story was posted on digg yesterday, a lynchmob formed that barraged the vendor with prank calls, emails, black faxes and ddos attacks.
All without anyone verifying whether there's any truth to the original story of course...

Re:Wow, a general purpose operating system!
I think Slashdot beats Digg on this one. Digg didn't really even have it first since it never showed up on the home page or on any of the section home pages. It only appeared on the raw diggall area that is flooded with so much stuff that it would have been nearly impossible to have caught this. When it did appear on that page, it showed up four times with ok summaries, but with no interesting commentary at all. Slashdot can also do TWO links, shocking but true, so they were able to link both to the actual site and to the NewScientist writeup.
one two three four
I still don't understand why neither site has a 'this link has previously been posted' message when potential dupes are posted. -
