New or old?
Ubuntu support older Dell hardware very well also...

Oh wait, you were talking about Dell supporting Ubuntu, not the other way around. -
Step right this way sir
For the trifling sum of 1.5 million dollars you too can be lairing it up in style...
"The Missile Base consists of 57 acres of real estate. The center secured portion of the property is protected by the original barbed-wire-topped chainlink fence. There is a paved road leading into the property with dual entry gates.
Above ground is the original 40 X 100 shop building, two concrete targeting structures, two manufactured homes, two 8 X 8 X 40 storage containers, and the silo tops of the three missile silos, two antenna silos, one entry portal and a few other misc structures.
Below ground is a huge complex consisting of 16 buildings and thousands of feet of connecting tunnels. The major underground structures are:
Three - 160' Tall Missile Silos
Three - 4 story Equipment Terminal Buildings
Three - Fuel Terminal Buildings
Two - 6 story Antenna Silos
One Air Intake/Filtration Building
One 100' diameter Control Dome Building
One 125' diameter Power Dome Building
One - 6 story Entry Portal Building
and a few other misc buildings and areas."

Build a smaller one that works
That kid really enjoying the destruction is pretty funny.
For those who'd like to do something similar but on a much smaller scale, Estes has done a number of smaller model rockets based on the Star Wars movies. A couple decent models are R2-D2 and my favorite, Vader's TIE fighter. But I would guess the most appropriate to this discussion would be the X Wing -
Re:not much historic data on hole
As far as reactivity with atmospheric Ozone (O3), Halogens (big electronegative atoms) Chlorine and/or Bromine in refrigerant = BAD. Fluorine only in refrigerant = GOOD. We are talking about a class of chemicals that are modified Natural Gases like Methane, Ethane, etc.. that have had one or more of their Hydrogens replaced with CL, Br, or F to make them "less flammable" and to engineer their properties making them superior refrigerants. See the ~Montreal Protocol~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Protocol "At present, 191 nations have become party to the Montreal Protocol (see external link below). Those 5 that are not as of September 2007 are Andorra, Iraq, San Marino, Timor-Leste and Vatican City." A single 12 ounce can of R-12 Automotive Freon was only ~$.99 in the 1980's? [You could recharge your car AC Cheaply and ON YOUR OWN.] The current price on the R134A replacement is over $10 per 12 ounce can! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-134a ) And if you are lucky enough to have some stock of the old banned R12, is it selling over $25 per 12oz can now!! http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=1&catref=m37&satitle=R12+can+refrigerant In addition, you MUST now be Professionally Licensed to even tap into an R12 air conditioning system's coolant loop using only special expensive approved refrigerant recycling/vapor recovery equipment which costs many hundreds of dollars per unit. Not to mention, R134a refrigerant REQUIRES a new class of synthetic lubricant oils, special compatible plumbing/hoses, and new compressor designs. R134a and its oils are corrosive to many metals (R12 was not) and R134a is NOT as good of a refrigerant compared to R12 (therefore AC systems in vehicles today are a bit larger and a bit less efficient to yield the same cooling needs, after all; cars are really just greenhouses with wheels) So a chemical that is virtually as inexpensive to manufacture (comparing R12 to its "replacement" R134a) now costs over 10x as much to purchase, yields complete incompatibility with older R12 systems, and creates a very lucrative "gray market" and "black market" for R12 refrigerant. R12 refrigerant manufacturers created as much R12 as was humanly possible before the Montreal Protocol manufacturer's ban date. Realize that this is and has been an artificially controlled market and now the profits are crazy. (Think like the cost of manufacture of a CD compared to the sale price) The politics of this were simple: making fortunes and claiming positive environmental action. There are R12 "blends" that are mixtures of various things that sort of work ok, but there is not a good replacement even to date and stockpiles of R12 only get more expensive. But hey, Yay for the environment! More references: http://yarchive.net/ac/politics.html

ebay's Power Seller programAccording to eBay
http://pages.ebay.com/services/buyandsell/welcome.htmlHow do I qualify?
Each month eBay automatically sends email invitations to qualified sellers. To qualify, members must:
Have been an active member for 90 days
Average a minimum of $1000 in sales per month, for three consecutive months
Achieve an overall Feedback rating of 100, of which 98% or more is positive
Have an account in good financial standing
Although that is direct from the eBay site it is not 100% accurate. My experience indicates that invitations to the Power Seller program are based on quantity of items sold and not dollar amounts. Somewhere between 3 and 5 items per month for three or four consecutive months will trigger the invitation email. I get invitation emails quite a bit but never have I sold $1000 worth of stuff in any month let alone three consecutive months.

Re:Dell OEM
ABSOLUTELY! I formatted Vista from my newish Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook and promptly installed one of these babies from Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Windows-XP-Professional-Dell-Reinstallation-CD_W0QQitemZ300153643573 HINT: Just get any Dell 25-Digit COA key (for your particular Dell XP OEM version) from another Dell PC COA sticker,
...Uh, I Mean, Ahem.... ""which YOU DO OWN and are not using while running *nix"". It also works nicely when you can find Dell bulk motherboards to build Frankenstein boxes out of as the Dell XP OEM reinstallation disks only work with Dell BIOS motherboards. (Uh, Yah... Using COA Stickers form other Boxes which you ALSO OWN...) As if Microsoft Genuine Advantage would make Dell OEM COA Keys invalid! -
Re:Oh, for the love of JebusIn the US, you can easily buy an unlocked phone (Amazon or EBay are good places to look), and any carrier will sell their services without a subscription plan, although they won't advertise it - it's mandated by law. It's also mandated by law that you can hold phone numbers when switching between carriers.
When I'm in the US, I use an unlocked cell phone bought in a foreign country, and a local GSM card, it's easy. The only thing to watch out for is that the US uses 850&1900 Mhz GSM, most countries use 900&1800. So make sure the phone is at least tri-band, or better yet quad-band.
Really there's nothing difficult about getting an unlocked phone in the US, it just isn't well advertised. And really it's not a bad deal to get the phone bundled with a long-term contract, if you're going to have to have a cell phone anyway.

Re:What's the draw? You can get that stuff easily for any player. Chargers, cases, FM transmitters are not special to ipod. It's just that IPOD ones only work with IPOD (proprietary connection) whereas a non-Ipod transmitted (which is usually less expensive) will work with anything including the Ipod. That's called lock-in, ala microsoft.
example: Itrip - 50$. Same transmitter @ ebay = 6$. Non Ipod ebay example? 10$ w/car charger. Similar non Ebay? 20$ .
Trust me, IPOD isn't special. I like the wheel, its a great thing that stupidly no other MP3 player has decided to support, aka "hmm, maybe they want to jump through the playlist really fast". Apparently that logic never caught on, instead it's "hmm, maybe after holding down next for 10 seconds we should speed up the search", as well as pitiful playlist support. I'll still never buy an IPOD, but people really need to realize the true benefits. Also, Ipod's don't play a lot of formats that other players (such as creative vision) do, and apple DRM's the stuff so that you can't transfer it to other people (creative could care less). -

Immortality
Don't forget the other key feature.
You are, effectively, immortal. You can keep coming back. That changes the economics. Instead of a single run (life), you can have multiple runs. Without the tedious childhood and learning parts.

1k ain't much
As the other posts have indicated a good entry level astrophotography rig will run several grand. However, there is a lot of "obsolete" kit hitting ebay and astromart these days that can be made pretty capable. On your budget I would go with an old clock driven fork mounted SCT (ex. Celestron C8 or Meade LX50).

Re:Does there have to be more precedent?
eBay doesn't consider the transactions auctions.
If you read the eBay User Agreement, you will find, that before you can bid on the site, you agree that eBay is not an auctioneer, eBay is "not involved" in the actual transaction, and there is no guarantee a buyer or seller will actually complete the transaction. (This is different from a "real" auction where an auctioneer takes possession and ownership is transferred to the highest bidder, by the auctioneer, and the bidder had to make a security deposit in advance, to guarantee they would not attempt to back out on their bid, and run away.)
We do not transfer legal ownership of items from the seller to the buyer, and nothing in this agreement shall modify the governing provisions of California Commercial Code 2401(2) and Uniform Commercial Code 2-401(2), under which legal ownership of an item is transferred upon physical delivery of the item to the buyer by the seller. Unless the buyer and the seller agree otherwise, the buyer will become the item's lawful owner upon physical receipt of the item from the seller, in accordance with California Commercial Code 2401(2) and Uniform Commercial Code 2-401(2).
They call sale of items to the highest bidder "Auction-style listing". Because it's a way of negotiating the price for the sale that works like a real auction would, provided everyone follows the rules.

Re:Sale..That's an agreement between you and eBay, presubambly, not you and the bidders.
Have you read the agreement yourself? Sounds like either you have not read the agreement, or.... (moron?) I'm hoping and praying, in the name of intellectual discussion, that it's the first. It's probably clear by the end of very first sentence, which reads: When a seller lists an item on eBay, and a buyer bids for and wins that item, the seller and buyer have entered into a contract. -

Space Shuttle simulation software
I can understand the government's concern here. There is advanced Space Shuttle simulation software available for download on the internet. It even comes with a highly detailed Space Shuttle flight manual.
The most disturbing part is, nefarious organizations are willing to sell this top secret material to the the highest bidder. Just imagine if this were to fall into the hands of the terrorists.
