Re:Oh, great
Guittard has a line of 2 ounce chocolate bars, including some single bean origins.

Re:European Chocolate!?!?
the best chocolate is indeed central and south american. face it, central and south america are the mothership for cacao varieties. it's where all the heirloom varieties grow and where there are the maximum number and varieties of hybrids.
the best chocolate i've ever had was a brand called "Tallon" from brazil and it was made with cashew butter. it has been impossible to get since the brazillian cacao trees were ravaged by witches' broom fungus.
good chocolates i like are El Rey (venezuela), Plantations (ecuador), and Santander (columbia). even when you get chocolate made in europe or the us, the best ones are often made with central and south american beans.

Re:Gun Control is "Slightly" Different...
I do agree, the gun control in the US is really relaxed. You find stores selling this kind of supplies like car dealers, all around the place. This should be centralized to important cities in the states, and be severely controlled. The more the thinks spread the harder to contempt. Thus, if you want to maintain a good control, don't let the weapons leave important supplies centers to small wooden houses over a highway.
Hunters should be aware that THIS is an important matter and stop whining about there freedom of getting weapons at the corner shop. That's the most dangerous policy I think the US have locally and I hope it's soon to be modified. No wonder you can even find rifles on e-bay. But if you can buy the parts online, I don't think is complicated (and in fact emotionally challenging for a psycho), to get the parts and build the weapon. -
Re:The new chipsets
There are lists on eBay, for USD 5; a converter/bridge that allows a parallel ATA IDE device to be attached to a serial ATA adaptor port. There it is. I would expect every motherboard designer to simply use the most recent chipsets and technologies all while continuing legacy support by speculating on also selling or including separate hardware to convert and have intercessions between the new and old.
I looks quite good. My favorite are the SCSI converters for IDE devices. I necessarily don't care for bootable devices on USB or 1394 Firewire. -

Google Suggest was released in 2004
According to
/., Google was doing input prediction three years ago:According to their public Changelog, the Sogou product was released June, 2006. According to the Internet Archive, Sogou is using the eBay style fonts and similar colors, their site looks a lot like Google, and they were touting their G-mail (gigabytes of mail) service well after the Google launch Gmail. Who is copying whom?

Re:Not necessarily in order...
I used to check out http://freshmeat.net/ almost daily, but that was when I was only a few years into Linux and still on an endless search for software that did different things, and at the time it seemed simpler to just wait and see what came up on fm every day (you could easily tell how active things were that way, too). Speaking of fm---does anyone have a copy of that old butchered-meat logo fm used to have, waaaay back, before the beginning of the fm II theme?
About weekly, I'll check out http://amasci.com/ (amateur science and electricity stuff), http://en.wikipedia.org/ (duh), http://www.cray-cyber.org/ (free supercomputer access), http://www.hpcalc.org/ (HP48/49/etc calculator stuff), etc., to check for new stuff. I'll check my http://facebook.com/ and http://myspace.com/orangesquid (shuddup) messages about weekly. From time to time I might browse http://www.amazing1.com/ (catalog which has Tesla coils and stuff, though they're not actually the best place for parts/kits/devices) or search for scientific equipment or old unix systems on http://www.ebay.com/ (see the Used SGI Buying Guide FAQ, etc).
I also check up on some of my friends via http://os.livejournal.com/friends every few days.
Lately I've been choosing a new section on http://scitoys.com/ to read every few days. Every few weeks, I'll usually find a different information-type site to read through gradually, or pick a topic to research on wikipedia. -
Re:The obligatory car analogy
Good guess, but playing cheap with the ECU is flat out asking for it! Here's an example of a cheap modification that is quite vague about what signals being sent to the ECU are being changed: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NISSAN-ALTIMA-1993
- 2007-2006-2005-2004-GAS-SAVER-HP_W0QQitemZ29010018 8833QQihZ019QQcategoryZ33597QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. Here is an example of something that actually adjusts your ECU's programming slightly: http://www.focussport.com/chips.htmThe truth of this is that the ebay mod sends garbage data to your ECU to try to trick it in some way (i.e. the infamous "resistor" mod on the MAF). 99 times out of 100. sending crap data to your car's computer either has no effect (because it may be smart enough to compensate for that error elsewhere), or has a negative effect (making your car run like crap). Re-tuning your car using the example of something like the SCT chip tuner mentioned above means the computer reacts differently to accurate data. This can and will make your car perform better. The difference is $9.00 for the quack solution, and about $300.00 for the solution that works well.

American Welding Society members already use them.
Greetings.
There is nothing nerdy about this technology. It has existed for Welder operators, so they don't need to be distracted with a complex hood and mask while holding the Work with one hand while holding the Welding instrument with the other. I didn't look into the URL referenced in the article, so I'll make a discernment with Notice of any change in the technology, that the Welding utilities that accomplish this feat come as either Solar-Powered with Batteries or limited to Battery-Powered and the LCD shade will activate when is sensed a certain intensity of light consistent with Welder activity.
Now the nerdy part of this would be to modify existing Welder shades on the small-factor Welder goggles for daily use. I would rather have a pair of square Welder goggles adapted for daily use, other than be stuck with a punk pair of day/night glasses that can't be used for rugged tasks.
That said, I believe a complete welding helmet with LCD shutters can be purchased on Yahoo Auctions or eBay Auctions for about USD 25; And here is a directory on eBay, where I see one mask with built-in LCD shutters for USD 60. -
Cheap aircraft
You can get everything to build a Bradley Aerobat (very similar to a Teenie Two,) for less than $20,000, and since you build it yourself, you are qualified as your own mechanic. There are/were some on eBay for less than $10,000, but that is a non-turbo version.

Re:low moral
Then tell me this- why do CDs (not the pirated ones- real, licensed ones) cost less in China than in the States? When the same CD costs $7.50 to buy in China and $19 to buy in the US there's something wrong (I didn't want to compare Amazon to eBay China but I couldn't find any online stores for China, mainly because in China there's a little wiggle room in pricing called haggling that simply can't be done online). Now, the Chinese CDs all say "not for sale outside China"- wonder why? They want to keep Americans paying more because htey know that Americans are willing to pay more than Chinese people. Of course, I mainly buy pirated CDs because the selections of licensed CDs are limited (There's only so much Ayu I can stand).

eBay
I still see a lot of the older Radio Shack kits on eBay, often in decent condition with their original manuals, selling at very reasonable prices. My favorite as a kid was the 150-in-1 model from the late 70s-early-80s timeframe. Every card-carrying adult geek has his or her own "Rosebud," and the 150-in-1 kit is probably mine.
It's probably the most fun you can have for $15-$20, unless you already happen to live in a seedy part of Bangkok. -

Ferraris and ... um ... something else...
Ah, I was waiting for the car analogy folks to show up. Just out of curiosity, why go with the Ferrari in this instance?
Ferrari is the perfect example.
Check out this eBay item. A Ferrari at $62,000. Rather appropriate for this discussion.
Okay, the real reason I like that eBay item is in connection to the seller's Nov 30th transaction. :) -
Re:no color, updates slowly
I bought one of these, and my god, it's the best phone I've ever owned, having also owned a Motorola Slvr L6 and a V330. It actually has everything you wanted but the extended antenna, but it has great reception. It also has the message indicator light and bluetooth. The address book might not be up to snuff for you though, it was released pre-OS X and I imaging it doesn't support OS X, and putting in address are a bit of a pain. Also, it's GMS, but only a tri-band phone, but won't work some places (like my home in Alaska, damn it, so I can only use it while at college).
It was the phone Ericsson released just before merging with Sony, and there is also a model relased by SonyEricsson, which I believe is pretty much the same phone with slightly updated software and different branding. The phone is light, pretty, sturdy, and useful. It even comes with POP3 email software! My one complaint is that the software sometimes responds a bit slowly compared to modern phones (it was released 5 years ago), and sometimes requires more clicks than seems necessary to perform something. But look into it, you can still find it brand new on ebay for around $50 with shipping, unlocked and everything. Oh, and I only charge it every three or so days, as compared to every night with my other phones. That right there is reason enough to get it for me.
Here's a link to an ebay auction for it, do a little searching and you can probably find it brand new for about the same price (that's what I did).

Re:Great. And the 80GB iPod will cost HOW much?
A 4GB flash jumpdrive currently goes for about $80.00
http://cgi.ebay.com/TRANSCEND-JETFLASH-V30-4-GB-US B-FLASH-MEMORY-PENDRIVE_W0QQitemZ320066574635QQcmd ZViewItem
Ignoring the mark-up and extra cost of the casing, usb chip and hardware, etc. that works out to $1600 for 80GB.
That's pretty far from "the better part of $5k or so" -
I can do better than that - $169
How about $169
My mother actually uses a slower version of this same computer (the 400Mhz model) to do Adobe CS2 InDesign and other publishing work, along with light graphics work with Photoshop CS2 (600 DPI scans of half page artwork). It helps that the computer has gotten a little faster with each OS release. Can you run Vista on the computer you mentioned? Because she can make full use of Spotlight on that old 400Mhz Mac and even Leopard should work on it...
Of course, you might want to add a little memory to improve performance, but that's true of the computer you listed as well. -

Just start it out right - the REAL ripoff...
Just make a decent (acceptable) starting bid, add a buy it now for something near what the market will bear and sit back and wait. No need to shill, no hassle no fuss - for example, this 5th gen video iPod I have listed:
[shameless plug]http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem &ih=015&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item =250077077194&rd=1&rd=1[/shameless plug]
You'll notice no reserve. I could have started at $1, but experience has taught me you can get ripped off occassionally that way - so I didn't do it, instead I started at the minimum I thought I would be able to accept.
I don't need to shill, all I need is one bid.
The BIG rip off on eBay comes from non-paying fraud buyers, such as I had the first time I listed this. The guy claimed to be a resident of NY buying it for his son at university in Nigeria (big tip off there, unfortunately).
The guy picked the buy it now option and sent me a lovely email in disjointed English. Then later (to eBays credit) I received notice from them that this gentleman's account had been suspended, as he was suspected of being a fraud - non-payment of auctions. His scam was to get you to send it before he tendered payment. He wasn't very clever about it, but it only takes 1 in, say 50, to make it worth his while, and rake in a months salary.

Re:Interesting
>> Down from $500? You're dreaming.
Sorry, I should have been clearer on this point. I was thinking of buying a Japanese PS3 on my next trip over there and bringing it back to the US. I do most of my gaming in Japanese because US translations of Japanese games (not to put too fine a point on it) suck.
And even if I were to buy one in the US, getting a PS3 on the cheap doesn't look too difficult. Ebay has numerous postings (example) for 20GB models going for under $400.
>> You could get a Mac mini for less. Read that again and let it sink it: it would be cheaper to run Linux on Apple hardware.
Yes, but can I play Final Fantasy XIII on the Mac Mini? Don't me wrong, the little Mini's kick ass. But they don't fit in too well with my plans for the living room: I want as few devices as possible doing as many things as possible. A PS3 fits this profile perfectly.
>> "But it does give users the ability to swap out harddrives... News to me"
You can change the hard drives out according to this guide. All you need is a spare 2.5" laptop hard drive, several of which I have lying around the home. I am also led to believe that this doesn't even void the manufacturer's warranty.
>> "Play all my PS2 games... So will your PS2."
But my PS2 won't play PS3 games (insert Cartman-esque "meeeeeeh"). In the medium term, there are several games i would like to play on the PS3. If I can get one console that does two console's worth of work for a small investment, I'm down with buying a PS3.
That said, you do make several valid points. I too am worried by the lack of rumble in the SIXAXIS controllers, as well as the paucity of good release titles. Like you, I will probably end up waiting until Final Fantasy and White Knight Story come out (i.e. until late this year). This should allow the Bluray/HDDVD format wars play out a bit as well.
I apologize if my original post seemed at all fanboi-ish... I was just stating the conclusions I had drawn after doing a bit of reading about the issue. I guess what they say is true: back up your conclusions or face the consequences! -

Re:This is news because...Here's even better proof that PS3 is not selling out anymore: PS3 Ebay listings A lot of systems are selling below market. Those that are above market price either have no bids, or have tricks like $500 (+$200 shipping) associated with them. There are some that have legit above market price bids, but nothing like what the Wii is fetching.
Ebay is supply and demand in action - and the demand for the PS3 is just not there anymore. End of story.
