FM Radio in Headphones makes iPod best still ...I really think if you want an FM radio you should buy some that are integrated into the headphones. You can practically pay for a set if you sell the iPod headphones on eBay. Sony makes these and Radio Shack makes and sells several as well. (Headphones with built in tuner, some for AM FM TV Weather that also have line out)
The iPod has yet to be beaten in my opinion, when comparing features the iPod's firewire interface (slower in theory, but not real world tests than USB 2.0), Amazingly simple integration and hard drive DATA capability are excluded. Plus they have great quality and have an INSANE number of support products and now battery & hard drive replacement services on the cheap.
I would hold off on any MP# purchase to see if the newest iPods will be compatible with a new Apple Music service possibly later this month.
I fully expect the new iPods to surpass anything on the market with a twist (as the the current ones do) for another year upon introduction.

Why didn't you mention the editor's name? What this little blurb doesn't tell you is that Lloyd's essay is just one of several in a book he's not the author of. It's from editor Glenn Yeffeth's Taking the Red Pill: Science, Philosophy and Religion in The Matrix , BenBella Books, 2003. It includes an introduction by David Gerrold, and contributions by James Gunn, Ray Kurzweil, Bill Joy, and many others.
In a case of good timing, I just happened to put the one copy I had up on eBay at:

Announcement is SignificantThis announcement that Palm OS 5.2.1 can handle more memory comes just before the new Palm Tungsten C is rumored to be released. The T|C is supposed to have 64MB of memory and run--you guessed it--OS 5.2.1.
Here is the original leak, and here is one for sale on Ebay. The thing is supposed to retail for $499 on the 25th, but some dumbass is willing to pay an extra $300 to get it a couple days earlier. Anyway, Quill Corp, Amazon, and Staples all jumped the gun with listings for the product but have since removed them.
I for one am going to snap one up on Wednesday. It's got a hi-res color display, 64MB of RAM, a thumbboard (which I like), a 400MHz Intel XScale chip, no exterior antenna, and best of all... 802.11b. (No, damn it, I don't want to pay a stupid monthly bill for your wireless service when I can get it just about anywhere I work away from the office.)

Re:AOL should sue themselves
No, but you can sell them on eBay. Some of the classics go for upwards of $50 or more. Don't belive me? Go see for yourself.

Qix
I'd love to play that Java Qix game I found the other day on my Game Boy.
Taito made Qix for Game Boy. Pick it up on Half.com.

validating email addressesIf you look at the email they sent you, the url to the new agreement contains a long random looking string which then re-directs to actual agreement, which has a human-sensible url.
It is likely that they are tracking which email addresses generated a visit to the page.
I've pasted below the URL's from my message, perhaps someone else can do the same for there's, and we can confirm they are different.
Feel free to visit these URLs and help screw up their stats a bit.

Technology
Technology keeps outdating itself... but some people can never accept it.
My $1000 486 10 years ago has seen a 99.9% decrease in value.
This $20 book published in 1998 has some idiot trying to get $5 out of it.
I've seen organizations rent computers for $30/month/each just to escape this madness. -
Funny you should say that....
If anyone wants to start a second American Revolution to take the country back from the lawyers, I'm game
:-).
Count me in. I'd love to see Eugene Levy's foreign policy in action. -
Trinitron
Get a Trinitron. They're pricey, but you won't regret it. They're brighter than regular monitors, as sharp as LCD screens, have excellent color and long life. The new ones have a special screen that is externally flat, but internally concave. This reduces glare but prevents the annoying edge distortion of normal flat CRT monitors.
Sony has an interesting description of Trinitron technology here.
If you're not adverse to looking on eBay, you can find some good deals there. Remember that many Dell, Sun, IBM, and SGI monitors are actually relabelled Trinitrons, so don't forget to check on them as well.

DiY - a six step model for success.
Hrm.
1) Go to pricewatch or e-bay and buy a server that can hold greater than or equal to 4gb... and buy the RAM while you're at it.
2) While waiting to ship - download the .iso's or whatever you'll need to prepare to install your OS.
3) Server and RAM arrive! Snap RAM into server - take existing machine, put aside - plug KVM into new server - fire up - install OS.
4) Test!
5) ?????
6) Profit!
-
Build your own.
Or buy a used one on EBAY. Slap Linux on it. Sleep well at night.

The HPLJ 4 and relatives
The best printer ever, hands down. Fast (10-12 pgs/min), reliable, and compatible - with everything. I never had a problem with them. Perfect for the office environment but perhaps a bit too bulky at home.
Unfortunately they are no longer being made but many can be found on eBay. Yay HP!

Re:okay, where can I buy a pcb milling machine?
You might want to see if you can pick up an old X-Y plotter somewhere and use that as the basis of a DIY design.
Replace the pen with a high-speed cutter and then you can interface to the plotter quite simply through the RS232 port or whatever the plotter supports.
Here's a plotter on eBay that might be a good starting point. -
Re:Why not just get a laptop
#1 - Laptops will ALWAYS be quieter than microATX
#2 - Laptops are smaller
#3 - latpops use less power
#4 - A laptop capabal of playing all audio and even some video can be had for less than $150
So I agree, why would you go with a microATX when a laptop is suitable? -

Equalizer!
although they have commercially available 5.25" equalizers,
lots
of
old
automotive
equalizers
will work great in a 5.25" space.
most car equalizers are 5.75", so you have to be a little creative with cutting off that extra half inch to squeeze it into an old cdrom case. but for a cheap/free secondhand EQ (and that 1X cdrom that you were never going to re-use), its definitely worth the effort, visually and audibly. -

Or get it with OS XJust for fun, I wonder how fast a slashdot review drives up an auction for the book with OS X thrown in.
:)I'm opening a betting pool. My cash says it'll go for $30 plus the resulting moderation level of this post.

Dr. Mario
I still want Dr. Mario for my GBA
Well, it's going for about five dollars right now, if you can stand it being in 4 shades of gray..
There's also some kind of "nintendo puzzle collection" thing coming out but i think it's gamecube only, and i don't know if it's coming out in america or just japan.
Made in Wario and Metroid Fusion make me wish i had a GBA... -
Sold My LCD and Went Back to CRT
Had a Samsung 15" LCD, but now that the big high quality CRTs can be bought on the cheap (used), I found myself switching back. There is just no comparison to a 20" Trinitron running 1600x1200 32bit color at 85hz.

Check out the NEC Mobile Pro
The NEC MobilePro is probably the most elite handheld PC I've seen. I don't understand why they aren't more popular. There are lots of them on ebay, and on the newer ones you can run NetBSD with X even (have a big CF card obviously.) The 770, 780, and 790 are the ones to look for. The 800 also runs NetBSD with X, but it's a larger laptopish form factor.

Re:Ebay linkIn the diagram on the eBay listing, the seller labels it "Descrambler".
And eBay stipulates that "does not permit the sale of items that can be used to descramble or facilitate the access to cable or satellite television programming without authorization or payment." Also "...Information on "how to" descramble or gain access to cable or satellite television programming without authorization or payment is similarly not allowed. eBay policy also prohibits the "encouragement" of this type of activity."

Here's a thought about eBay
After reading this and laughing (I know a guy that got seriously burned after unplugging his DirecTV's phone line for awhile) I decided to take a look at raymond917's eBay Feedback rating.
He's got a pair of shades next to his rating. Make me wonder if he'll change his moniker after this.
What I found interesting is how much an average person such as myself can find out about someone just by looking at their eBay Feedback and any of the still available auciton listings. This guy likes kickboxing movies, in fact he's bought a number of them since January 1st. He bought a Gunman Chronicles/Survival/Alcatraz mulit-pack at the end of February that he's selling already.
Things like this with eBay make you go hmmm. -
Ebay link
This is what we're talking about. A little crappy coax coupler. I saw this on ebay a couple days ago, and thought to myself 'This must be a scam -- such a little thing can't work, since real descrambler boxes are pretty large and complicated'. Guess I was right.

Re:Store already slashdotted
oh yeah, and a buddy of mine just got a QLA2300 (their current top-o-line FC card) for $243.00 US...> linky here
-
Re:I dont quite get it
Why would one want to use it in a home setup?
Because slightly obsolete FC hardware is DIRT CHEAP on eBay. That, and it's kind of fun to install some "enterprise level" hardware at home. -
Here's one...
Not the exact controller he spoke of, but pretty close - just search for "QLogic" with no other qualifiers.
Here you go! -
Re:Store already slashdotted
Try eBay. We got a QLogic 2100 (Copper) for $40. Drives can be found for $99 for a tenpack of 18.2GB Seagate 10k drives.

Re:My $12.60
Oh boy! Now I can buy socks!
According to Ebay, it's not enough to even bid on anything on the first TWENTY-SIX PAGES of results for "socks".

netgod and unixsurplusHere, check these guys out:
http://www.stores.ebay.com/netgodshouseofhack
There's a giant warehouse in Sunnyvale, CA full of ANYTHING you need from workstations and parts up to Sun and SGI enterprise stuff. Even a bargain basement Cray. For the non-mainstream stuff like Sun and SGI, it's all usually way cheaper than some retail place like Weird Stuff, although they're pretty good too.
Tell em you saw this on Slashdot. I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it.

Re:Umm..
foo and bar have tons of results but foo(bar) has none.
The really cool stuff will always be a rare find on ebay. An auction site running on winshit servers may have some computer junk, The prices are too high, and the selection isn't as great as people seem to think it is. Even though there will always be a motherboard or 100 on eBay, a true gem is a rare find. The joy of a salvage store is the joy of finding something rare, unique, and cool for a price so low it seems criminal. Ebay appeals to the sellers and therefore conflicts with the interests of the buyers. -
