Noval 760, circa 1977
This reminds me of the Noval 760, a Z-80 based computer-in-a-desk from the mid/late '70s. 25 years ago, I really wanted one. Can anybody locate a better picture? The one linked above is from an eBay auction and is due to drop off the face of the web soon.
-
Update!
He cancelled the auction then relisted it here minus the pirated software!

Don't click on RedWolves2 book link
Other vendors typically have it for less than Amazon. Go to Dealtime and use their book price comparison engine to get the best price. In this case, they report that Walmart has it for $31.49. And if you provide your zip code, they can compare prices including shipping.
And, of course, there's always half.com for used books.
-
Re: Half.com
Don't forget Half.com. Get a better deal on a slightly used book and boost your eBay karma to boot!

Re:I just want good videos @ launch.com
So at which store can I buy Tomcats for $9?
on eBay -
Re:Math?...there will probably be about 4 of these modified DC systems to ever be utilized and will belong to EE students and be used for a final project.
And while I've got it booting, I'm still trying to pick up a keyboard for less than $10 total on eBay.
So, it's only 3 right now.

Here is one on eBay!
For $2.00USD its a deal, From Logitech.

Hewlett Packard Capshare 920
The Capshare was the perfect tool for doing this kind of thing. I bought one right before they stopped making them for $250. You can still find them on ebay, but they run $700+. I've scanned hundreds of documents using mine. It still is, IMHO, one of the coolest pieces of hardware that I own.
The CapShare connects to the PC using IRda or a serial connection. The software for it isn't available for the Mac or Linux. It can also transfer files using the IrOBEX protocol. I've been using it with linux for a while and have also writted a WindowMaker dockapp for dealing with it(although it isn't a complete solution yet). The Capshare ships with a windows tray application for managing communications. It also comes with OCR software. The biggest problem is that the software doesn't work quite right in anything newer than WinNT.
As far as using it with a Mac... All you would need is an IrDA port and an OBEX library. It looks like some people have had luck doing stuff with a palm. The dockapp I wrote is based on a palm pilot IrDA file transfer application. so... -
Re:So, how do you fix the problem?
I'm sure this is not the optimal solution you would like, but at least you can prevent certain bidders from bidding on your items again.

Here's an example
Electric Turbo
These have been all over ebay for months now, going for $50 to $250. They sell for around $20 at any Marine store. They are for boats, and were never meant to be used in an automobile. There have been many reported cases of people putting these on their car and the fans shattering due to them not being able to move as fast as the incoming airflow in WOT situations, and getting sucked into intake manifold and doing major damage. -
C-Pen
I understand and appreciate your problem. I have tried many solutions, and I believe the c-pen 800c is the best solution I've tried for my research needs. There is another pen based solution, WizCom QuickLink SuperPen which I've also tried. I did not like the wizcom because it was not as comfortable to use or as accurate. It also actually had a moving part.
:) Both have SDKs to write your own software, however, the only one I could get access to was the c-pen, which made it even more of a favorite of mine. The cpen can also act as a mouse and can do some gestures in addition to being able to input text through "writing" (in big letters) on the page. Both companies are barely alive it seems, but it's a niche market, and I hope they survive. They both have some fantastic functionality, such as translation and barcodes. Of course c|net did the normal bribed review, but I guess the cpen wasn't out at the time. Both are upgradeable and can load extra programs or dictionaries and such. I wouldn't want to go back to college with out one.
Hey, if this has at all been useful, please feel free to buy me one! I miss having it around. -
HP Capshare REVEALED
eBay Auctions
They can transfer images to printers via IR, so I'm sure you could hack something together that would be able to use the information. I'm sure it's in a pretty standard format.
You might need a programming book and a PCL/HPGL/PS spec...
Anyone smell a sourceforge project?
I've seen one of these things in use before, they are pretty sweet.

What to do if you're just starting out...I have a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell, like a guitar and a mountain bike and a computer, but I'm not going to bother putting it on eBay because my rating is a big fat zero, and I doubt anyone will want to buy from an unknown quantity such as myself.
No worries! I was there once! Just play Diablo II and get a good eBay rep selling items that don't even exist! Then, when it comes time to sell something in the Real World, everyone will look at your feedback and think, "I have nothing to fear!" -- When in reality you don't know the first thing about packing, insurance rates, shipping costs, etc...
Need proof that this plan works? Just check my feedback!

So, how do you fix the problem?Part of Ebay's fraud problem would be curtailed (IMHO) if Ebay would either require members to maintain a credit card or checking account with a verified address, or require users to participate in their ID Check program. Also, Ebay needs to look at bidding patterns to determine fraud. Here's why:
Every so often, we put up some auctions for networking equipment. Lately there has been a trend of people bidding on Cisco auctions (see this article) and never paying.
One Ebay user bid a Cisco 3640 router I was selling up to $2550. This same user created his account two days prior, and was the high or winning bidder on over 80 auctions. Here's this user's Ebay winning bid history. Now, I'm not a mathematician, but this A-hole ruined over $64k of auctions. Sure, you can relist and file fraud reports, but what's to prevent someone else from doing this again and again? There's no accountability.
If they would require some type of user verification to buy and sell, wouldn't you think twice about fraud? Furthermore, why can't Ebay red-flag suspicious bidding patterns? I think everyone agrees that a new user probably will not bid on over 80 auctions worth over $64k in a couple of days.
Just my 2.47 yen.

Re:So?
Do you know how many police stations can afford an UltraSparc for this specific purpose?
One Word: eBay. (and the seller has only one bad feedback!) -
Even Mitnick gets fraudulent bids at Ebay!
His laptop, currently open for bidding, had been up to over USD 15000 when first listed. Now we see that because "We have received numerous bids that have had to be cancelled, because we believe them to be fraudulent." that more extreme measures are being taken by the lister this time around.

Re:Awesome
The stuff you get today will provoke less of a reaction from your geiger counter than the dust bunnies under your bed
Huh? The half-life of U-238 is 4.5 billion years. If the plate was "hot" in the 50's, it is "hot" today. If it's not setting off your Geiger counter it's because Geiger counters are poor alpha detectors. Unless the sensor has an extremely thin sleeve, the alphas will never make it to the avalanche plates.
Fiestaware is an extremely popular collectible. The color you want is burnt orange. Happy hunting.

Re:Drop the Camera and Price....
Same reason I'd prefer a libretto L5. The Mobility Radeon is nice too, tho the Sony may have one (the review was a little lacking).

Shameless self promotion
Allright, so this is a little lame, but just in case anyone wants one -
I just put my C1VP up for sale on ebay. Complete with wireless 802.11b and 10/100BT networking cards, and 128MB memory upgrade (for 256MB total). buy me -
what to do?
I am sure you will be able to find something to do with it...

Re:Sell it.
Unlikely. This 25+ lb metor is currently going for less than a thousand on Ebay.

No, actually, you can't. I'm going to bet that the eBay Police will say no because of their Questionable Items page, specifically the Human Parts and Remains part.
After all, they got all pissy when you try to sell your soul on their site.

Re:In defense of RedOctane.Instead of bothering yourself to hassle Funco with when they get a game in stock you can always try the used game sites on the web.
Half.com
Amazon.com
Ebay.com
GameRankings.com
UsedGames.com
Recycle-Video-Games.com
ABC-VideoGames.com
Heck Gamestop even has their own site . You can always try on their site instead of going to the store. I am not sure if they have a fully integrated web site and brick and mortor store. If they don't they should hire me to fix that! :) -

Kevin Mitnick's Laptop on eBay
You can buy it and be an UBER HAX0R
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =2057697313
This is the Toshiba Satellite T1960CS, 486 laptop computer seized by the FBI on February 15, 1995, in Raleigh, NC, during the arrest of the world's most celebrated computer hacker, Kevin Mitnick. The laptop is a 486DX with a color LCD, detachable trackball mouse, AT&T 14.4 PCMCIA modem card, power adapter and documentation in FBI evidence bags. The laptop has been signed on the bottom by Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, and says, "You've got the whole world in your hands. --Woz (Free Kevin!). It is also signed by Mitnick himself. The system was shown on the September 27, 2002 episode of The Screen Savers on TechTV, where the signatures on the bottom were authenticated in a special show hosted by Wozniak and Mitnick. A tape of the show will also be included.
This is one of the two laptops allegedly used to hack into networks of major corporations and Tsutomu Shimomura. A letter of authenticity shall be provided with the unit.

Cheaper alternatives...I'm using an Ericsson R380 World. Runs EPOC, calls, syncs, surfs and is only 99$ bucks (without contract).
There are still a bunch of them on eBay.

Dual 195MHz machine?
SGI was very kind to send us in this dual Octane 2x195 Mhz MIPS machine accompanied with a 24" SGI-branded Trinitron monitor.
Otherwise, they would have had to shell out a whole $799.00 on eBay for one.
What did SGI do, pull one from the junk bin?
They should have sent some relatively modern hardware....

Re:I see this all the time
Funnily enough, Linux costs more than Windows because none of the regular pirates stock Linux. So Win2K is US$ 2.15 but Redhat is about US$15 which is what the cheapest unoficial Redhat CD costs
Are you sure?
Granted, this is mostly US, but CD-Rs are just as cheap everywhere in the world. -
Re:Taxes on internet commerce
I can buy a $400 graphics card from Texas and have it shipped to me for cheaper than going to a local store to buy it for the same price. The reason is I don't pay the sales tax on the board.
The sales tax pays for local law enforcement, schools, the local government, things that I enjoy taking for granted. By depriving my local economy of said taxes, they have less money to spend on services that I use on a regular basis.
People go to great lengths to avoid paying taxes when making large purchases: visiting Indian Reservations, going out of state, and purchasing from the internet.
How much tax-free "stuff" have you bought from the internet?
An example I will try to use (although probably incorrectly) is ebay. I'm sure they pay taxes to the state of California. When I buy something off of ebay I do not pay taxes. A few years ago it was a flea market, but now more and more businesses sell brand new merchandise off of ebay. While I'm sure each businesses pays taxes, I have yet to pay any tax on any purchase. This is siphoning money from my local economy to another state. My local government (State, County, District) has made no money, while I have spent my disposable income. While this is not robbing my local economy, it does not help it in any way. Potholes on streets will go unfixed, fewer policeman will be there to help, and state employees will have to do more with less in general, because the funds are less than expected. All from a simple ebay purchase.
While I might not be able to cause a catastrophe of this magnitude by myself, consider the growing amount of people using the internet to shop. The more tax-free money spent on the internet = less money to fund services that affect your daily life.
Taxes are always a necessary evil.
Someone who has ambitions to gain political office never has good intentions. -

Re:OT? What's the best cheap video card for Jaguarbest, cheap upgrade car for a two year old Mac would be?
Here's what you can get for $50-80. Minimum to use QE is 16MB 2xAGP, either Radeon or GeForce, preferred is 32+MB 4xAGP. Note: QE isn't exactly a speed boost, but it lets you turn on all the lickable stuff (animated backgrounds, drop shadows and transparency on everything, etc) without slowing down.
To bring this back towards the topic, the main reason why Mac video cards are later and/or more expensive than the PC equivalent is endianness. You have to write different ROMs for x86 vs anyone else. To put it another way: if Intel hadn't made such a screwy kludge back in the 8086 days, their competitors would be better off today.

Nothing so odd
So.. Basically OSI is trying to cut in on the After Market selling of property and accounds, and try to take in some of the profit themselves.
That's no such a bad idea. People on Slashdot always say- Don't attack a new technology or development, find a way to adapt to make it work for you.
That seems to be exactly what they are doing here.

In Other News...
Players of Ultima Online are outraged to discover a service called eBay.
Really, though - who didn't see this coming? "end-of-ultima-online" seems inappropriate here; the end's been coming for a while now.
- At least four (five?) expansion packs
- The canning of UO2
- Premium services offered by Verant for their Everquest
Obviously, they're just running out of ideas, and at the same time, trying to milk every last drop from the cash cow that is Ultima Online. -
Check Ebay...Many people are selling the electro-luminescent "wire" on there, in 15, 20 and even 30 foot lengths, pretty cheap, too - try this search.
Also, if you search on Ebay for "pc neon" - you will get some references to various clear LED lit fans that would make for interesting case mods (provided you keep the fans clean).

Re:Why do you keep supporting them?
Can you imagine a Led Zep fan choosing to give up Led Zep because they are on Atlantic? Impossible. Thats what you are asking people to do.
This is a non-sequitir. Music this old can easily be had cheaper than retail. The second-hand market is way underexplored.
Giving up something that a person has been listening to for decades is difficult, I grant you, but I simply can't imagine that it's that difficult to make a conscious decision to not buy the latest top-40 dreck--or to at least wait a few weeks for it turn up on the second-hand market.
