They're including as an "illegal download" people who can hear your radio because you have the volume too high.

Stop Breathing Out! You're destroying the planet!
There is only one solution to stopping the "carbon footprint": KILL EVERYTHING!
Considering Google's high energy standards from using alternative energy in the GooglePlex, to using energy efficient hardware, its not enough! So everyone must die! That's right! Kill everything! Destroy everything you touch! (By clicking on that link, you have drowned a litter of puppies due to global warming! How do you sleep at night! You should kill something! HURRY!) You must save the planet from yourself. You are not clean enough! You're mentally ill! (Gasp! You killed the wiggy-wamp-wiggy! A species of ant that lives in the Rainforest! MURDERER!) Germs are making you like that! They fart their carbon dioxide in the air! Must destroy the germs! Must kill everything! AUGH!
OK, enough sillyness. I've had quite enough of this carbon footprint bullshit! You know what, I'm going to keep surfing the Internet. I'm going to surf the internet until I kill a penguin with an oil tanker in Florida!
"Save the planet? We can't even save ourselves!"--George Carlin.
By reading this post you have already helped destroy the o-zone layer. Never mind that a Gamma Ray Burst can destroy it in an instant, but you a supernova to somebody. -

Not really - we only ever hear about the efficient ones here. Head on over to Fark (or even Youtube:) to get some examples of bad guys working....inefficiently.

So true, just like when they found Amelia Earhart's plane last year. Major news outlets didn't think it was newsworthy enough to run the story at all.

I think Fark's privacy policy is one of the best. They have a short version: "We will not give your addresses to third parties. We hate spammers. Bunch of jackasses is what they are." And then, there's a longer, official version for the lawyers,...

Re:I cry "BS!"
Crying wolf destroys the perception of journalistic integrity for everyone.
-
that's the problem
people who think real life resembles a b-grade hollywood movie plot. if they were comparing this to a bad hollywood movie plot and laughing, i would certainly lighten up and laugh along. in fact, some do make this joke, and i do laugh:
now that's funny!
;-)but now read some of the posts here. look for a humours tone. none. you are talking about posters here, go ahead, read some posts, who *actually* believe the government killed this guy and made it look like a suicide. AND they spread the anthrax in the first place. AND they did 9/11. its all masterminded by the top secret cabal you see
there are actual low iq fools, posters in this thread, go ahead, read, who really firmly and honestly believe these things. go ahead, read some posts here, MODDED UP as interesting and informative no less. it is of course a joke. but the really crazy joke are those who take conspiratorial fantasies seriously. and its not a fringe parnaoid schizophrenic few, this cretinous stupidity is mainstream
i mean, creationism is pretty hilarious too, when you think about it. flying spaghetti monster and all that... if creationism weren't taken so seriously by so many fools that they actually warp our education system. the same goes for people who's opinion of government comes from the plot of steven seagal movies. same stupidity, taken very seriously, by enough fools, and you have something that's not funny anymore, but something to seriously denounce as unhealthy for society
i'll say it again:
healthy distrust of your government is normal and helpful to the functioning of a vibrant society
however, rabid, paranoid schizophrenic musings on all evil in the world falling at the government's doorstep is not anywhere near the definition of "healthy distrust". more like pathological hobbling distrust

Re:Paying when you receive?
Dear Mr. Free The Cowards:
It seems there has been a gross error on your part. You should have properly formatted your original reply [1] first and used an MLA approved citation method to indicate to the reader what point from which reference [2] you were arguing for or against. Now you can see the huge mess you caused by replying to a slashdotter [3] without following the proper guidelines. We are all very serious about engaging in proper debate and encourage you to practice these guidelines in a better site to hone your skills [4], you may return when ready.
Sincerely,

Re:I don't get itTry an offline reader. Feedreader is good for Windows. Go to your 3 sites and load the feeds in. Set the feeds to update every hour. Then, when the mood strikes you to check your sites, you don't have to load anything at all. The content is already there, right on your desktop, waiting whenever the Feedreader icon is orange. Also, I GUARANTEE that once you start tacking feeds, you'll go to a new site you like and say "Hey. I can add this feed." and you'll be off and away. I started with exactly two and look at me now.
Here's my list, organized by folder. If a folder is marked (collapsed), I read those feeds as a group by clicking on the folder. Note: if the descriptions seem basic, /. was bitching about "too few characters per line," so I had to add some filler.- Feedreader (collapsed) - these two feeds came with Feedreader, and I just didn't delete them.
- Games
-
- Deus Ex Projects - two projects for my favorite game of all time that both move one inch toward completion every 6 months.
-
- Deus Ex HTDP - high-definition texture pack. Text feed, news and announcements.
- Project 2027 - new levels and story for Deus Ex. Text feed, news and announcements.
- The Escapist: Zero Punctuation - if you're not watching these game reviews, you should be. Feed is links to the weekly ZP posts.
- Valve Steam news and updates - Steam is Valve's content delivery system. This feed includes game updates and general news. Text only.
- News/aggregator
-
- CNN top stories - this feed can be annoying because it sometimes contains a story summary in the item, but more often it just contains a link to the story. I wish it had summaries more often.
- Fark - Fark is a news aggregator site that, like
/., combines user submission with a little editorial control (as opposed to the Digg method). This feed is of the mainpage stories and contains only the headlines and a link. Sophomoric and dark humor are mainstays. - MSNBC - this is the top stories feed, editorially selected. They also have a "most viewed" feed if you're into celeb news and dogs in funny poses.
- MSNBC - Coundown - feed of Countdown with Keith Olbermann video clips, updated nightly, with the first two stories usually posted before the show is over. Feed is links to the clips.
- Slashdot - log in, your feed is personalized to your mainpage prefs.
/.'s own feed contains headlines and story summaries.
- Politics
-
- Crooks and Liars - This is a blog that supports more liberal ideals than the party line. Feed is of front page stories and contains attachments of any items referenced in the stories (usually QT files, sometimes PDFs)
- Daily Kos - The largest liberal log/community on the net, this one is much more toward party line. Text only.
- Electoral-vote.com - election news and coverage with a map that updates the electoral college count by poll average. Contains the site's daily upd

Re:They missed the worst weapon of all.
Ducks are just as bad. I was sitting by a pond the other day with about 20 or so ducks there. In the space of about half an hour or so, about six fights broke out, half of which were sexually motivated. In the same amount of time, over a hundred humans must've passed by --- a population in whom not one case of violence or sexual harassment broke out.
Yeah, but you don't know the meaning of laughter until you read about someone on Fark who found out about ducks the hard way a couple of days ago.

I call "Bullshit"..and if this was FARK and not Slashdot, I'd feel obliged use the "ASININE" tag, and to say "OBVIOUS tag surrenders".
What I am more willing to believe is this: 99% of the people in China don't even HAVE internet access, let alone have an opinion on it; the 1% left are the "elite", and 99% of them are Chinese government lap-dogs, doing precisely what they're told to do, because they don't want their families to die in labor camps.

Uh oh...greenlit on FARKI see that a discussion about this Slashdot story was greenlit on FARK, although it hasn't hit the main page yet. Here's the (snarky as usual) headline:

Re:ok
Thank you! You have the support of someone within the US that believes that the level of paranoia around here is friggin' retarded.
I swear if I hear the word "Terrorist" on more damn time, I'm gonna go completely crackers. Am I afraid of terrorists, terrorism, bombs, sleeper cells, whatever? Fuck no! If it happens, it happens, and no amount of fearmongering, or paranoia is going to change that. Sure, you'll catch of few before they can pull whatever stunt they're planning, but eventually, one will get through.
The very fact that we're so paranoid is evidence that the terrorists have already won. The goal of terrorism is to get your enemy so afraid of you that they change their way of life to make you happy. Check the news; check Fark.com. There's an article just about every day about this person won't take a seeing eye dog in their cab because that would be bad, or somebody jumps up on a plane screaming about allah and how great 9/11 was in arabic, and they get away with no punishment, and worse, they sue and win for "discrimination"; but the instant a college student walks into an airport with a homemade light-up shirt, she gets an MP5 shoved in her face! She wasn't even trying to get on a plane. She was waiting for a friend to come out. I'll be honest, I've worn a shirt like this. After a few minutes, I completely forgot I was wearing it. I finally remembered when I started getting weird looks from cops at IHOP. I don't blame her for wearing it in an airport, I probably would have too, and not even given it a second thought.
She didn't respond to the lady at the counter, maybe because she didn't hear her, or possible she wasn't paying attention. Yes, the police should have responded, but they responded with WAAAAAYYYYY too much force.
Whatever happened to "no harm, no foul?" charges should be dropped against this girl immediately, and she should sue the dogshit out of the TSA.

Re:If it stops them from getting hooked on WOW...
Yup, this machine was probably built for XP. And from your statement I'm guessing that your parents aren't doing anything on a computer that needs to be done. I know if my mom can't get her email or watch a flash video one day she just decides to do something else for a while.
A student, otoh, has work that needs to be done. And in a timely manner. And often using whatever wierd software the school/prof says they will. Things like "CPU" and "RAM" aren't bells or whistles. They're the basic needs for getting work done. The fact that a better CPU or more RAM also makes it possible to play a game doesn't mean that games are all a better machine is good for.
If you're that worried about your kids playing a game on the PC you buy them then you'd better remove all the other bells and whistles too... like Flash... and the web browser... and Java and the OS... because they can be used for entertainment too. -
You're doing it wrong.
- Don't mention God. You'll start another flamewar and we'll have to hear about FSM vs Kthulu all over again for no good reason because TFA isn't about that. That nonsense is what fark comments are for.
- Using M$ for Microsoft is pedantic. Don't do it. Lots of people hate the Beast but like money. Like the devil in old folk tales, don't name them but talk about them less directly. You see how I'm referring to them as if they were the culture assimilating soul destroying Borg without actually saying it? That lets other people know they want to be in on the joke. It's a subtlety thing. I like to call it "peer reference pressure."
- One exclamation helps! Two don't?
- Have a signature that tersely expresses your wry wit.
- Location, location, location. Being frist psot seldom hurts.
- When following up with a post like this one, be sure to mention that Mandriva is well supported by major vendors like HP (8 different models each of laptops and desktop/workstations). That way you won't be too far off topic.
- If you use links, try to work in one that's funny and on point at the same time.
- All ordered lists must end with
...profit!
Here's an example of this done goodlier: Thank goodness

It's not funny.
That's why its funny. Listen to the song.
A reference to a famous quote has the potential to be very funny. The more relevant the reference to the current discussion, the funnier it becomes. The quoted lyrics do the minimum, so that adds little to the humor.
However, if the song itself was funny or was even a parody then that humor could be translated through the reference. Since the song did neither of these, that aspect adds nothing to the humor.
Overall, the reference isn't really funny.
And if you think that I'm a joyless pedant (based on the above text), here's what I think of as an excellent example. Since I can find the actual article in question, the post at 2006-08-01 01:38:17 PM has a screenshot of the top of the referenced article as it appeared that day. -

This, from Space.com?
Have they turned it into a blog where any moron can write a story and get it on the front page?
The only way this improbable event will ever happen is if there was a nice cup of really hot tea powering those boosters. -
Fark chimes inDrew posted a comment this morning:
Here is Fark's stance on this issue:
We're not a silicon valley venture-capital funded behemoth startup. Fark is self-funded and run out of my living room. They have parties with limos and live bands out there, while here in Kentucky I get pretty excited when I find a new bourbon at the store around the corner.
Fark isn't in a financial position to stand up and take on the DMCA/MPAA/WTFOMG in a head to head legal battle, they'll crush us into fine paste. I can however say with confidence that the DMCA is a load of crap, the MPAA and their attorneys are douchebags, and someone needs to take them down. More power to Digg, if we can help we will. We just can't take point on this one. Digg has millions of VC dollars in their bank account, they're in a much better position than us to take this one on. Go gettum guys.
(Btw this does mean we'll have to continue deleting posts and links containing the code until some BS politico in Washington changes that BS law. Please don't post it thanks)
The initial responses are understanding. Shows the value of communicating with your users -- which is arguably what digg failed to do, in this situation. By the time any statement was made at all, the "revolution" was already at proceeding at full force.
There's actually one other thing that's lead to digg's "revolt" getting so far out of hand -- lack of editorial control. They're only yanking stories *after* the userbase at large has seen them -- sometimes, hours after the fact. Fark, by contrast, can pull these stories *before* they hit the front page. Seeing story after story front paged, and then killed has only encouraged other users to follow suit. -
Re:Add Fark to the fearful
I think even worse is the web master Drew's official statement and the community responses: http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLin
k =2776805/ Its really interesting to compare the level of technical saavy over there with here or even Digg. As in, they're a bunch of cowards who don't really understand what's going on. Man, I love me some Slashdot! It feels like home! :) -

Re:the fark.com "I blame [fill in the blank] threa> i'm a farker but i missed that thread.. probably because im mainly on totalfark and not the main page.. unless it was a totalfark thread.. either way i missed it, link?
Turned into a whole string of "I blame..." responses.
Usually art imitates life, but sometimes life imitates art. A few threads later After Columbine, Tom Delay blamed the shootings on science classes teaching evolution. Surely, we've learned from past idiots, right? Well... a day after the VT massacre, it appears not showed up, with a link pointing to a Crooks and Liars article in which Tom Delay blamed the Columbine attack on the teaching of evolution, and some other contemptible ghoul of a fundie whackjob blamed the VT shooting on the teaching of evolution.
Just when we'd thought we'd blamed it on everything, some fucking fundie freak has to play a game of one-upmanship.
