Re:Siberians
She looks like a pretty cute kitten. Mine is seven or eight now. Like I said, she lives with my mom and I've never met a cat that likes to purr and sleep more. Of course when I first got her, it took about two days to coax her out from under the bed. She still runs under there if someone sneezes too loudly or my mom gets her cane too close. Brave, she is not. The breeder let me know that she was a purebred Siberian and that's what I was paying for -- not some magically allegry free cat. Ah, the power of hope...

Re:Not gonna matter
While I agree with you that CNN/FNC/MSNBC will always put the highest priority on their corporate interests, and will never encourage you to seek free sources of content, that doesn't mean that you have to listen to them. More people are getting informed about the world around them through the web, whether directly through news sites, from blogs, or just by reference in emails and forums.
While coders are only a small portion of the people, the open source "movement" has already affected culture. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Creative Commons license certainly must have been influenced by the existence of the GPL. Now look at how many photos and blogs are licensed as CC. I even recently came across a full-length movie that is licensed as CC, as well as source interviews used in other documentaries. archive.org is a great source for open "open source movies".
Absent potentially harmful legislation or anti-competitive behavior (like issues related to Net Neutrality), people will continue using the web for more and more of their information and entertainment, and will become publishers themselves of various sorts. When you're trying to throw together a movie with various clips from other sources, it becomes clear to you just how important it is for that content to be open. Even blogging news, it quickly becomes an issue. The more people that become publishers, the more open the content will be.

Re:Autoplay trojan?
I would've put autoplay Goatse on them, personally.
That way you don't even have to have it mail out personal information to catch whoever falls for the scam.
You'll have at least a week you can just wander the halls and look for that expression. -

Re:What about Carbon Aerogel?Actually, dumping aerogel (silica or carbon) in Diet Coke doesn't really do much, since (a) it floats really well, and (b) it doesn't wet very well. You just end up with aerogel bit on top of the diet Coke.
This isn't conjecture, I have plenty of aerogel to experiment with at the office (like this piece, for example). If I can grab a digital camera, I'll see if I can get a shot of some aerogel bits just sitting on some Diet Coke.

DRM as a *feature*
I took these in January. I think they believed that DRM was a feature. Hence the badge.

One of the single best ways to fuck yourself up is to have your keyboard and mouse right up at the edge of the work surface. Get them as far back as you can so your forearms are on the desk instead of hanging off it. If you’re stuck with a vacuum tube on your desk, pull the desk out from the wall so that the pivot base of your monitor is at the back edge and the monitor’s ass is hanging out in space. Then push your input devices as far back as you can. Spend a few hours like that and see how it feels. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised.
Fortunately, the shift to LCDs should free up another foot or more of space on people’s desks. And hopefully their reduced size and weight will cause more people start mounting them on walls or articulated arms. Oddly enough, bringing your focal point up to eye level does wonders for the neck (and probably the eyes as well). -
United We Stand, Comfortably We Sit
The two things that have saved my spine (aside from Dr. LaBreque, my chiropractor) are a really good chair and an articulated monitor arm.
I used to have a standing workstation, but once I started doing long hours (as in 10+) of work at home, that was no longer practical. But for as much as 4-6 hours a day, it’s awesome, especially for gaming. (This is the only point on which I agree with Rummy.) -

7 steps to delete a shortcut in Vista
Apparently it takes a good deal of effort to delete a shortcut in Windows Vista. I have a feeling this humorous picture sequence anonymously posted on Flickr won't last too long so I'm reposting it here and linking the original image. Chances are that by the time the retail version ships, deleting a shortcut will be much the same as it is now but this is worth a posting for a laugh.

Re:Slashdot through the looking glass?
Well, as usual, Microsoft overshoots. It's ridiculous when it takes seven clicks to delete a desktop shortcut.
-
Re:You are not a Windows user.
Yet your claim is that the boxes are so ubiquitous they interfered with the normal operation of the computer.
Since deleting a desktop shortcut is such an uncommon task that a half-dozen pop-up confirmation dialogs won't be too much of a bother, after all. -
Flickr
Flickr is excellent.

Re:You are not a Windows user.
So...anything 99% of my users at work won't be doing on a normal basis is protected by the popup boxes you so loathe.
I suspect some of your users might occasionally want to delete an icon from the desktop. -

Did they modify the design ?
Did they modify the design of the green model ?? They design at the homepage of olpc shows the screen standing on a standard that can fold nicely into the back, thus enabling it for e-book use. A video showed the laptop to be detached from the screen (usb I guess)
.... I serliously wand that model (INCLUDING sling windup option !) However, seeing the pics at the link from slashdot it seems to be very different. -
Re:Maybe Not So Fair?
Beta depends on who you talk to and the "concept" no longer means what it used to mean.
That's because Gamma is the new Beta.
Me? I'm hanging on for Vista Omega. -
4 colors4 colors and 4 models if you look closely. Orange/red, Yellow/orange, blue and green. The models with orange are different in the plastic around the screen (one seems to lack speaker and leds)
Green wins by the way. Not only does it miss the hump of the blue one but it got Neko ears instead of bunny ears. Neko for the win!
-
Quite different
There are actually at least four different design concepts for this marvelous project.
So the one shown by Peter is just one.
I think that the crank operated recharger is an important feature that the orange design is missing. -
hmm
Looks like someone got a couple of iPods.
-
Re:Hand Powered?
Odd, if you look at picture http://www.laptop.org/en_US/blue-front.jpg
you can obviously see the crank handle on the side tucked in.
At http://www.flickr.com/photos/pete/152018285/in/set -72057594143224765/
it looks like the handle is broken off.. -
Re:These look great!
Not just 3 different colors - 3 different models. The orange, light blue, and green ones shown all have physical differences. So which one is the one to be produced? I vote for blue.
-
Even Better!!!
How about the new Apple laptop from HP? That's totally wicked!!!!!
-
These look great!
The final photo in the set shows three different colours - they all look fantastic - this photo shows the fedora desktop. Also looks great!
It should be noted that the 'horns' are for directional wireless (and also cover USB ports when not in use) - remember that if you want to mock them!
I say kudos to AMD, Brightstar, Google, News Corporation, Nortel, and Red Hat for making this possible. It's a pity Gates & Jobs couldn't join in rather then attempting to downplay the fine efforts of this group. -

Re:Ubuntu Logo separate from Debian?
Some of the content of the article would seem to support the idea of having an Ubuntu logo to differentiate Ubuntu stories from those about Debian.

I just took this screenshot:

That page is out of date. It also claims that the ac3 and aac support is unusable, but it works quit well. I haven't tried in Media Player, though. I use Media Player Classic (GPL'd and has a minimal interface). -
Re:Mssed-the-last-train immersion pods
Hotels renting rooms over night or by the hour, often with some kind of theme setting. It's not for prostitution, as many westerners assume at first, but a popular way for people to get together, especially since the expensive rents mean you often live at home until you marry.
My favourite around here in Osaka is "Chapel Christmas", which, as you may guess, is Christmas-themed, complete with a huge Santa and grinning happy elves all over the facade. I have a few pictures here:

Opera 9 Beta weirdness
Jason's design exhibits some interesting behavior in Opera 9b. The roundrects that contain each article and its abstract continually, automatically, concentrically increment themselves. Check out a few screengrabs:

Re: It's all good fun. (TCO 2006 Photos)
I attended the TCO 2006 finals as a spectator, because TopCoder does attract some really great talent and therefore makes for good recruiting and good entertainment. The talent pool does skew toward non-US and early 20s developers, because as you say, people who already have good programming jobs don't have the time or the real need to put in the hours of practice required to compete at these levels.
But TopCoder is still a lot of fun. I gave it a shot - if you just look at it as a fun way to compete in a field in which you have skill, and not as some reflection on your overall talent level - you can have a good time.
Even being a spectator in the finals - being able to watch the top competitors attack some hard problems in real-time - was an exciting experience.

The real post
I'm posting this even though I moderated, just because the story really really is in need of help. (translation, you get two fp trolls)
The "story" is just a bunch of screenshots, and a link to a blog on techrepublic.com.com that you need to register to see. Once I got into the blog, it wasn't even on the page, because this was posted there April 20th with the following "content":
Fedora Core 5 Installed.....Next Stop, XenSource
Tags: open source, linux, virtualization, the hot button, steven s. warren, xen
I just finished my installation of Fedora Core 5. It was a painless installation. I will be concentrating next on getting XenSource installed using Fedora Core 5. The IT grapevine says it is easier to install Xen on FC5 than FC4.
Has anyone out there installed Xen on FC5 yet? If so, I would like to be able to pick your brain if I stumble and trust me I will stumble. Xen seems really difficult to install from the initial reading I have done. I have a sneaking suspicion it is going to be painful. We shall see.
Click the link to view my FC5 Installation Gallery.
Note: You can also see my other Installation Galleries that I have done by reading the following blogs:Note: Here is my installation gallery for Linspire Five-O
That was it, just a "have you done it?" and photos, on flickr no less. It was done by Steven S. Warren though, who was the contributer to zdnet, so it wasn't out and out theft, just quite dumb. As someone previous said, looks like they just posted it to display all the ads on each page. But if you want to see that, there is allways the Printable Version with only 1 ad.
